I still remember that I had a big argument with a boy in my class when I was in primary school. I can’t remember what it was about, but I have never forgotten the _______ I learned that day.

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people will think of Confucius(孔子), whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.

Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother,but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music,history, poetry and sports.

Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children fromnoblefamilies could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.

Today ,people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. “When I am with three people of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their qualities and follow them.”

He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled. All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

Confucius is not only a great teacher but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others,” he said.

About 6 months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one trainer who worked out at the same time as I did. He did his daily exercise with such a quiet determination (决心) that he made it all look effortless. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上). I had never tried doing chin-ups before. But it looked so easy, so I asked him if I could try one. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to try. I pulled myself up without thinking… once… then twice. I stopped because that was all I had in me, but he stepped up behind me and pushed up for two more. It felt so good and I felt strong.

The next few days when I finished my workout, I would ask him to watch me do chin-ups. However, each time I could only do two. I was quite upset, but he was amazed at what I could do. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.

Because he told me I could, I didn’t realize how difficult it was. I was encouraged to try and I didn’t doubt it for a moment. I truly thank him for letting me believe that for me success is not only a possibility, but also a realistic goal that I can achieve.

We humans are only born with one set of eyes, so it’s our job to take care of them for our whole lives. The good news is that if we do a few simple things every day, we can keep our eyesight and decrease the risk of ever hurting our eyes.

Almost all doctors agree that we can improve and keep good eyesight by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is especially important for us to eat vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes. Besides, we need to keep our eyes safe when we spend a lot of time in bright sunlight. The best way to do this is by wearing sunglasses that have 100% UV(紫外线) protection. What’s more, it is necessary to protect our eyes when work with dangerous chemicals. For this reason we should always wear goggles (护目镜) in chemistry laboratories at work or at school. In the end we should not spend too much time in front of the computer or TV screen. That is why doctors advise if we have to use a computer for a long time, we should take a short break every fifteen or thirty minutes.

Keeping good eyesight is important. If we do these few simple things, we can protect our eyes and reduce the chances of losing our eyes. As the popular English expression says, “It’s all fun and game, until someone loses an eye.” When people say this, they mean that losing an eye is a very terrible thing.

My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.

Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor but sadly reading isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can’t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He’s busy, so I think sitting down to read just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.

My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.

Firstly, it’s better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eyes, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night’s sleep.

One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world—I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.

I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else’s head?

So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!

A few years ago, my husband and I were on an island for a weekend with our 3-year-old and 4-year-old daughters. As we went back and thought about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. “We want to go to the Butterfly Museum,” said Ariela and Eliana.

As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands of beautiful butterflies, all flapping their colorful wings.

My girls were jumping up and down and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun. I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious and asked, “How long do butterflies live?” She said, “About ten days.” “What can butterflies do in ten days?” I asked. The guide stopped, looked at me and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place.” “Wow,” I said. “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you.”

After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference. Be thankful to the influence you can have on your family, friends, workmates and neighbors. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world a little better for everyone.
