Bill was going to visit Wang Dawei in Chongqing for several days. Before he left America. Bill tried to learn about Chinese food and Chinese ways of doing things. He wanted to be polite. He learned that most people in China eat rice, drink tea, and take off their shoes when they go into a friend’s apartment. Bill even learned to use chopsticks.
At the same time, Wang Dawei learned about American food and American ways of doing things. He wanted to be friendly. When Bill came to Wang’s house, Dawei told him to keep his shoes on. Later they went out for dinner. They ate pizza and drank Coke. The next few days, they had breakfast in a coffee shop and ate hamburgers in a fast-food restaurant.
On his way back to America, Bill was thinking about why he never ate rice or drank tea or ate with chopsticks. He never took off his hoses when he visited Wang’s family. He thought that living in China was just like living in America.

One day, on the way home from school, my mum told me she was going to make some new rules for me and my brothers and sisters. Before this, we knew she wanted us to be good, but we really didn’t have any rules. On the next day, she started giving us the “house rules”.
Clean your rooms every other day. Be ready for dinner at 7:00 p.m. (that means sitting at the table, with clean hands). If mum is having a meeting in the house, be very quiet (that means turning down the music and the TV). Be ready for bed at 9:30 p.m. (that means lying in bed, with a clean face). Get up at 7:30 a.m. To get ready for school (that means your feet are on the floor, not just hanging off the bed). Take the rubbish to the trash can in the street on Monday morning before school. Clean the bathroom on Thursday.
Following these rules isn’t too hard, and sometimes it’s even fun. At other times, it can be difficult. For example, if your room is really dirty, and you can't finish cleaning it on that day, you have to finish it on the next day, along with anything else you have to do. That can be hard.
Mum made these rules because she loves us a lot. She wants us to learn how to be on time, be clean and neat, and be polite. Every day, we try to follow her rules.

Dear Headmaster, Lately our class has become worried about the environment at the back of the school, and we would like to do something to make it more attractive. We have done some research and have come up with a plan. With the help of our parents, we can do most of the work ourselves, but we will need a small amount of money for equipment, plants and paint. I am writing to ask the council for permission to do this work and to ask if the school council could donate $500 towards our protect. We would like to turn the empty land at the back of the school into a nature garden. We would plant trees and grasses, make paths though the garden and dig a small pond. We think this would provide a peaceful place for students and teachers to walk in. It would also attract birds, insects and small animals which students could then study in science classes. We would also like to paint the back wall of the school that faces the new garden. Some of our art classes could then paint a huge picture on it. It might be possible to paint over the wall each year so the next classes can make a new picture. Lastly, we would like to paint all the rubbish bins. At the moment they look old and the paint is coming off. If we paint them in bright, attractive colors, students might be more likely to use them. We think our plan would greatly improve the back of the school and everyone in the school would benefit. We have already asked our parents and they have promised to donate one weekend of their time to help us complete the project. We hope you will give us permission for this worthwhile protect. When we have finished the work, we hope the council will join us in a celebration morning tea so that the whole school can thank you. Yours sincerely, Jim White Monitor of Class 1, Grade 9 |
