Every day there is less and less space on Earth for rubbish. Yet every day we make more and more rubbish. What can we do? We can recycle some of our rubbish. Recycling means that the rubbish will be made into something that can be used again.
Recycling helps Earth. And it saves space in rubbish dumps. Half of everything that we put into landfills could be recycled instead. In fact, most things made of paper, metal, glass and plastic can be recycled.
Paper can be broken into small pieces and made into new paper. Steel and aluminum cans(金属雄)can be melted down(熔化)and made into new cans. The same is true of glass bottles. This can be done aver and over again. Recycling doesn't take as much energy as making these things the first time. So we can use less of Earth's fuel resources.
Plastic can be melted down, too. Then it can be formed into park benches, playgrounds and so on. Some people call plastic the "wood" of the future. Things made of plastic will last about 400 years-even if they stay outside in the weather. No wood can do that!
34. The underlined word "landfills" in Paragraph 2 probably means _____________.
A.bench factories | B.places for rubbish |
C.green mountains | D.recycling centres |
A.The can is put into a recycling bin. | B.The can is melted down and reused. |
C.A steel can gets filled with corn. | D.A person uses the corn in the can. |
A.Cans should be melted down. |
B.Old newspapers can be reused. |
C.We can build benches that last 400 years. |
D.We should recycle everything that we can. |
Dear Principal Becker,
I'm David Brown, a student from Grade 8. I'm sitting in the classroom to write you this letter because I really have something to say about the school lunchtime.
Well, I know that school is for learning. It is important to have good reading and Maths skills. But I think school is also important for another reason. It helps people learn to get along with others.
It may seem that lunchtime is not important. As you see, lots of us spend most lunchtimes just talking with our friends. But this activity is more important than it looks.
I'm learning how to get along with others. I'm learning how to solve problems. I'm finding out new things from others. I'm learning how to say sorry. These are all important skills to learn.
My problem is that the time for lunch keeps getting shorter. I know this is happening so we can spend more time in class learning. But please do not forget that we are also learning at lunchtime. We are learning people skills. It is important that we have enough time to spend with our friends.
I really hope that you can make our lunchtime longer. A little more time spent with friends each day would benefit everybody.
Yours,
David Brown

It was the end of June and school was finished. “It seems like the end of everything, doesn’t it?” said Diana. She started crying. “Stop it or I’ll cry again. I don’t think I will pass this exam,” said Anne. “Yes, you will. I want to go with you, imagine how much fun it will be.” “Yes, but I will have to study a lot. It was so nice of your Aunt Josephine to ask me to stay at her house,” said Anne. “You’ll write to me, won’t you?” asked Diana. Anne went to Aunt Josephine’s house on Monday. On Wednesday Diana went to the post office. There was a letter from Anne.
Dear Diana,
It’s Tuesday night and I’m writing this from Aunt Josephine’s house. Last night I was really lonely in my room without you.
This morning I went to the Academy. There were lots of students. People were doing funny things before the exam. One boy was talking to himself.
Then we went into the exam. Some of the girls looked so relaxed. My heart was beating so quickly. Then we did the English exam. Diana, I felt like I did four years ago when I asked Marilla about staying at Green Gables. In the afternoon we had a history exam. I think I did OK. But Diana, tomorrow we have geometry. I am worried about that.
The exams finished and Anne went home on Friday evening. She was very tired and happy. Diana was waiting.
“It’s wonderful to see you. I miss you. Did you do well?” asked Diana.
“I think so, except with geometry. I don’t think I passed. It’s so good to be back. Green Gables is the best place in the world,” said Anne.
“When do you get the results?” asked Diana.
“In two weeks. They’ll be in the newspaper. Two weeks of waiting,” said Anne.
“You’ll pass. Don’t worry.”
“I want to pass with a high score or not at all,” said Anne. She seemed angry.
Diana understood that Anne wanted a high score than Gilbert.
Anne and Gilbert were in competition with each other. They saw each other but didn’t speak. It was like they were strangers. Anne secretly wished that she was friends with Gilbert again. But she also wanted to get a higher score than him in the exam. Everyone thought Gilbert was going to get the highest score. She wanted to make Matthew and Marilla proud. Well mostly Matthew.
The results were late. Finally after three weeks of waiting, they arrived. Diana came running to the house with a newspaper.
“Anne, you’ve passed. You and Gilbert. You’re equal firsts,” said Diana.
Anne took the newspaper. Yes, their names were at the top of a list of two hundred pupils.

Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to face the failure. In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of the parents choose this way. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. The other way is to blame others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don’t meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time. The young should be allowed to experience failure.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it.
