Fourteen year-old Miguel Diaz talks about an exciting science project.
Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico (墨西哥湾) called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr. Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and various creatures that live in this part of the sea. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to collect information. The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite frightened mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the ways to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.
I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team was very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will definitely help me work harder to become a scientist.

How do you eat potatoes? Potato chips and potato stewed with beef are popular choices. But can you imagine that in the future potatoes will be served as a staple food on your table?
Potatoes are becoming China’s fourth staple food after rice, wheat and corn, according to the Ministry of Agriculture in January.
This is a welcome move to make Chinese people’s staple food more balanced and diversified (多样化).
But why is potato the choice?
Potatoes are healthy and nutritious. They are a good source of vitamin C and potassium (钾). A potato’s vitamin C is as rich as 10 apples. What’s more, potatoes are low in calories, only three fourths of the same amount of wheat and corn. So if you are worried about your weight, you can try changing to potatoes.
Also, potatoes are easy to grow. They can be grown in the north and south during winter, spring and autumn. The plant is also able to bear drought. With China facing water shortages, potatoes can become a safe and reliable food.
And some products made of potatoes can be stored longer than other staple foods. Flour that is made of potato can be stored for as-long as 15 to 20 years, according to Beijing Times.
With these advantages, the potato has long been a popular staple food in many Western countries such as the US and UK. They can be made into different foods including bread, cookies and pancakes.
While here in China, because of Chinese eating habits, the potato will be cooked differently. It will be made into noodles, steamed bread (馒头) and other staple foods similar to those made of rice or wheat.
So are you ready to have potato noodles or steamed bread for your next meal?
27. From the last sentence of the first paragraph we can infer that________.A.Chinese people will have fewer staple foods |
B.Chinese people like to accept potatoes as one of the staple foods |
C.potatoes will become the staple food instead of rice, wheat and corn |

A.noodles | B.steamed bread | C.pancakes | D.pizza |
A.They can be grown in drought areas. |
B.They are rich in vitamin C and low in calories. |
C.They can be made into flour and stored for a long time. |
D.They can feed more people than other food of the same amount. |
ASTRONAUTS onboard the International Space Station (ISS) recently made history by taking bites of some red romaine lettuce. They became the first humans to eat food that was grown entirely in space.
The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called “Veggie”, which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, the astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes (消毒纸巾) and then ate it with some salad dressing.
“It was one small bite for man, one giant leap for…our journey to Mars,” one astronaut Scott Kelly later posted on social media.
Space vegetables are a part of the NASA experiment called “Veg-01”, a study on how plants grow away from the effects of Earth’s gravity. It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
“If we’re ever going to go to Mars someday, we’re going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable (自给自足的) in its food supply,” said Kelly.
Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help keep astronauts alive, NASA said.
“Veg-01” started in May 2014. The first batch (一批) of vegetables took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check.
After making sure it was safe to eat, astronauts planted a second batch on July 8. They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it.
Astronauts usually only get some fruit and vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS. Now with the vegetables grown in space, they can eat whenever they want.
