He tried it once more and he felt himself going when he turned the fish. The fish righted himself and swam off again slowly.
I'll try it again, the old man promised himself, although he had little strength now and could not see things clearly.
He tried it again and it was the same. So he thought, and he felt himself going before he started; I will try it once again.
He took all his pain and what was left of his strength and his long gone pride and he put it against the fish's pain and the fish came over onto his side and swam gently, his mouth almost touching the boat.
The old man dropped the line and put his foot on it and lifted the harpoon(鱼叉) as high as he could and drove it down with all his strength, and more strength he had just gathered, into the fish's side just behind the great chest fin that rose high in the air to the height of the man's chest. He felt the iron go in and he leaned(倚靠) on it and drove it further and then pushed all his weight after it.
Then the fish came alive, with his death in him, and rose high out of the water showing all his great length and width and all his power and his beauty. He seemed to hang in the air above the old man. Then he fell into the water with a crash that sent spray over the old man and over all of the boat.
From The Old Man and the Sea

Take a look at teenagers around, dressed in baggy-pants(宽松的裤子), drinking soft drinks such as coke, reading Japanese cartoons. Whether you are in Beijing, Wuhan or Hong Kong, you'll get the same impression. But should we copy others or should we maintain our differences?
It sounds convenient that people around the world speak the same language, dress in the same style, eat the same food and play the same games. If the world was like this, you wouldn't feel any stranger in any corner of world. But just imagine living in such a strange world. How dull and colorless it would be!
Different kinds of food that people can taste, the colorful and fashionable clothes that we dress in and different languages we speak are all part of the different cultures that our ancestors(祖先) left us. These differences represent their creativity and talent. And we all enjoy different cultures in our daily lives. When you travel to other places, you want to see different things. When you talk to foreigners you expect to listen to interesting stories. These differences in culture are what make life colorful.
But the whole world is shrinking into a small village as globalization takes effect and many different cultures are disappearing. In most big cities around the world, people wear the same clothes. Fast food stores are everywhere. Hollywood movies are kicking traditional performing arts out of our lives. The colors of our life are disappearing.
There is a joke that even the panda and zebra want to live a colorful life. So let's take action to protect our colorful culture before it becomes as simple as black and white. It's not difficult. Learning some folk songs, trying on traditional clothing and even eating local food instead of going to KFC can help. And we're sure you'll enjoy it.
26. The passage is written to ________.A.explain cultural differences |
B.talk readers into keeping cultural differences |

If you know a place really well, you might say that you know it "like the back of your hand". How well do you know the back of your hand, though? New research shows that we don't know as much about our hands as we think we do.
Wider and shorter
Professor Matthew Longo, at the University of London, tried an experiment. His team of researchers covered the left hands of 100 people. They then asked the people to point to where they thought their fingertips and knuckles(指关节)were. They found this very difficult.
"People think their hand is wider than it actually is," said Longo. Fingers also seem shorter.
Sense of position
"It is connected to our sense of position" explained Longo. This is our ability to tell where different parts of our bodies are, even when we can't see them. "It tells us whether a joint(关节) is straight or not," he said. It also tells us whether we are going up or down in an elevator. All the information comes from our nerves. It's like our brains have maps for the size and shape of our bodies. "This experiment tried to find those maps," said Longo.
Strength of feeling
These maps make mistakes. "Our brains see areas as larger where the skin feels touch strongly," said Longo. Body parts don't appear as their true size, but appear bigger or smaller depending on how strongly they feel touch. Our lips, for example, have more nerves than our noses, so our "maps" show lips as being bigger than our noses.
29. What do we know about Longo's experiment?A.It examined left-handed people. |
B.People could find their knuckles. |

Many people dream of becoming a programmer for a major tech company because they can get high pay. However, it may mean having to accept overtime work. In fact, working overtime has been common for workers in China's Internet companies for many years, but debate about the practice heated up recently online.
These days, many Chinese tech companies follow a "996" work schedule. This means their workers have to start work at 9 a. m. and finish at 9 p. m. six days a week. They seldom get overtime pay for this, Global Times reported.
This schedule has been heavily questioned ever since a computer programmer created a website called "996. ICU". It says that following a "996" schedule is unhealthy and could cause workers to end up in an intensive care unit (ICU). Many other programmers have complained about the schedule "If it's a work-more-pay-more model, I'd be a lot more willing to follow the '996' schedule. But the truth is, not every company is run that way. That's why many people complain," a software developer said.
However, the bosses of some tech companies have defended "996". Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, said it's "a huge blessing" for young workers to do "996". He said, "If you don't do '996' when you're young, when will you? If you don't spend more time than others, how will you get the success you want?"
Many have questioned Ma's thinking. People's Daily pointed out that "valuing hard work does not mean making workers work overtime."
In fact, according to China's Labor Law, people should work no more than eight hours a day or no more than 44 hours a week. It is illegal for companies to use a "996" work schedule.
53. How many hours does a worker have to work a week according to the "996" schedule?54. What does the website "996 ICU" say about the work schedule?
55. If you are now working for a major tech company are you willing to follow the "996" schedule? Why or why not?
