Over 100 panda fans sang Happy Birthday as they celebrated the 38th birthday of Xin Xing at Chongqing Zoo on August 16th, 2020. Xin Xing enjoyed a cake made of ice covered by her favorite foods, including bamboo leaves and shoots, apples, carrots and watermelon.
A pandas average age in the wild is 14-20 years. Xin Xing is the world’s oldest giant panda. A panda of 38 years old is like a person of about 110 to 130 years old. Xin Xing is expected to break the Guinness world record. Good genes (基因) and special scientific care are probably the main reasons for Xin Xing to live so long.
Xin Xing, born in Sichuan Province in 1982, was saved in the wild and sent to Chongqing Zoo in 1983. She visited Canada during the 1988 Winter Olympics, where she attracted over 1 million visitors. She is also a hero mom, having given birth to 10 pandas.
Now she is in good physical condition and she is going to 100 kg in weight. She eats seven meals a day, including 30 kg of bamboo shoots, 1 kg of bamboo leaves and some fruit. The zoo also pays much attention to her health, including daily blood pressure checks.
“We spend so much time together, and she is like a family member to me,” said Zhang Naicheng, who has looked after her for 28 years. In recent years, Zhang has spent most of his nights staying in Xin Xing’s panda house in case she needs him. “It’s hard work, but I have fun looking after the panda,” he said. Since she is too old to eat the hard skin of the bamboo shoots, the zookeepers choose fresh bamboo leaves that they can cut into small pieces.
Xin Xing’s 38th birthday encourages people to try to protect the animals, especially those in danger.

A road is a path that links two places. The Silk Road is a path that has linked the Eastern and Western worlds for more than 2, 000 years.
But did you know: the Silk Road is not a single route (路线)! It is actually a series of trade and cultural transmission (传送) routes that started in ancient times. It began during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi’an in Shanxi province and ended in Eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea (地中海). The Silk Road was about 6, 500 kilometers long. It went across one-fourth of the planet.
The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Apart from silk, jade (玉器), ceramics (陶器) and iron went west to Rome. From the west came glass, gems, and food like carrots and sesame (芝麻).
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. In addition to goods, knowledge of science, arts and literature as well as crafts and technology, was shared across the Silk Roads. In this way languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, places along the Silk Road are known as top travel destinations, such as the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an and Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu. Beginning in August, 2014, a train line, the New Orient Express, started to run from Beijing across the Silk Road. People are able to take the train and see the sights along the ancient route.

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System (太阳系). Sometimes Mars is also called the “Red Planet”. Mars is the second closest to Earth and it is easy to see in the night sky. Like Earth, it has clouds, winds, seasonal weather and mountains and other familiar features. A day on Mars is about 24 hours and 37 minutes, while a day on Earth is about 23 hours and 56 minutes. Humans have started to explore Mars since the 1960s.
Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Space X, is considering getting people to go to Mars and finally setting up a base that can serve as an actual city, supporting one million people there.
To build a city on Mars, rockets should be sent to Mars continually until there are enough resources (资源). The SpaceX team will build rockets that are able to be used 1, 000 times. With the rockets, spaceships with people and things will be sent to Mars. The spaceship is central to the plan. Each spaceship can carry up to 100 people and about 450 tons of things at a time and it will take about 80 days to get to Mars. To support the project, SpaceX is going to build 1,000 spaceships.
Because it is really cold on Mars, human-friendly living spaces will be built under ground. On the ground, spaces will be built with special glass with plant life inside, where humans could walk around without spacesuits (宇航服). As for food, plants could grow in water instead of soil on solar-powered farms.
“There is a good chance that we will not succeed,” Elon Musk says, “but we are going to do our best and try to make as much progress as possible.” Let’s hope that we will live a better life on Mars in the future.
