Long ago in a small village, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors.
A small, happy little dog learned about this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he jumped happily up the stairs and to the doorway (门口) of the house. He looked through the doorway. His ears lifted up and his tail wagged (摇摆) as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself looking at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself,“This is a wonderful place. I will come back to visit often.”
In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the other one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung (垂下) his head low as he looked into the doorway. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly-looking dogs looking back at him, he growled at them. He was so afraid when he saw 1,000 little dogs growling back. As he left, he thought to himself. “That is a terrible place. I will never go back here again.” All the faces in the world are mirrors of you. What kind of reflections (反映) do you see in the faces of people you meet?

This feeling is often called “culture shock.” It is important to understand it and learn how to deal with it if you want to adapt successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are four stages that you will experience after you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually referred to as the “excitement” stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it won’t be long before you move from the “excitement” stage to the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult. The language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping have become a challenge. It is at this “stress” stage that you are likely to feel worried and homesick. This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock.”
However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move to the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home and to like certain aspects of the new culture better than those of your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Continue to be brave! And overcoming culture shock will be a piece of cake.

A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when they are still young(less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is possible that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship(关系).
However, there was something unfriendly between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略, 好斗)and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away, it means aggression. while a dog doing the same means submission(顺从).
In homes with cats and dogs living in peace, researchers found a surprising behavior(行为). They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk "Dog", and dogs can learn how to talk"Cat".
The interesting thing is that both cats and dogs seem to become smarter. They can learn to read each other's body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common(共同的)than was expected(预料). If they understand each other's body language very well, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.
The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond(超过)pets—to people who don't get along well, including neighbours, workmates at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

I was filled with doubts and worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.
For me, height was my trouble. I was much taller than other girls, I often bent( 弯曲) my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn't looking forward to entering the ninth grade.
My grandfather didn't laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me "Stand straight and tall, Alisa. "I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.
My grandfather grew up in war﹣torn(战乱的) Europe. " Stand straight, stand tall "meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life, "If they could do it, why couldn't I?""Stand straight, stand tall, "he often reminded(提醒) himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was not only trying to learn this hard new job but also a new language.
"Stand straight, stand tall, " he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather’s unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.
"Stand straight, stand tall" has become not only a piece of advice to improve my posture(身姿). It also tells me to be proud of who I am.

One day, after I had given him his dinner, he started crying for mum. He was so young and really needed mum. So I dressed him, put on his shoes, carried him on my back and walked out. Soon he fell asleep. About half an hour late, I found that he had lost a shoe while sleeping. I took him off my back and put him down. I knew we needed to find that shoe, for our mother couldn`t afford new shoes. We had to go back to find it, so I told my brother to Wait right here. A man heard it and stopped me just before I walked off. He asked me, ”You are leaving your brother here to find the shoe? What would you do if he is not here when you return?” I did not know how to answer that question. He continued,: It is OK if you can`t find the shoe, but it is not OK to lose your brother.” Then he sent us to mum`s workplace by taxi.
I have depended on the kindness of many strangers in my whole life. I feel regretful that I cannot find them and say thank you. I don’t even remember what the man`s face looked like, but he taught me a lesson—people are more important than things.

Tina ran over to the bulletin board. “Maura, what’s our act going to be?”
“Our act?” I said, holding my books tightly.
Tina smiled and said, “It says acts can be individuals, partners, or small groups.”
My grip (紧握) on my books became uncomfortably tight.
“It’ll be fun,” Tina said.
I thought for a second before continuing. “I’ve got an idea and...”
Tina interrupted me, “Yeah, me too. Let’s talk at lunch.”
During math, I tried to think of how I would tell Tina. After all, we are best friends.
We should be able to see eye to eye about this. The problem is Tina always takes charge.
I really wanted to win, but I wanted to win on my own—with an act that was all mine.
At lunch, Tina started talking, “I have it all planned out. We can sing along to a song and dance, and my mom can make costumes (服装).”
“But I had another idea.” I told her about my juggling act.
Tina considered it. “Nah, I don’t think I can learn to juggle in three weeks,” she said. “You don’t want us to feel stupid, right?”
When my grandmother picked me up, she drove a few minutes and finally said, “Cat got your tongue?”
I explained as she listened.
“Well, you weren’t respectful of your own ideas. I understand that you’re friends, but you’re still responsible for your own actions,” said my grandmother.
“Tell the truth,” she added.
When we got home, I took 12 deep breaths and called Tina.
The next day, she described her act and her costume like nothing bad had happened. I know everything worked out fine. But the biggest surprise came at break, when we played a game that I chose, not Tina.

When I got to school today, everybody was acting all strange around me, and at first I didn’t know what was up. Then I remembered: I still had the Cheese Touch from last year. I got the Cheese Touch in the last week of school, and over the summer I forgot about it.
The problem with the Cheese Touch is that you’ve got it until you can pass it on to someone else. But nobody would even like to get close to me and talk to me. Every time they saw me, they screamed “Ah~ Greg Heffley is coming!” I knew the Cheese Touch would stick with me for the whole school year. Luckily, a new kid named Jeremy Pindle was in the classroom, so I passed the Cheese Touch to him.

My first class was Maths, and the teacher put me right next to Alex Aruda, the cleverest kid in the whole class. If the kids’ last names start with the first few letters of the alphabet, the teacher will call them most, and that’s why they end up being the cleverest. Some people think that’s not true, but I can prove it. You see the picture on the left? Alex Aruda is a top student, while Christoper Ziegel is different.

I can only think of one kid. He broke the last-name rule, and that’s Peter Uteger. Peter was the cleverest kid in the class all the way up until the fifth grade.
When we kept saying his first letter out loud, it sounded funny. This gave Peter a difficult time. These days, Peter doesn’t put up his hand at all, and he’s pretty much a C student. I feel a little bad about the whole P.U. thing and what happened to Peter.

A.he is dangerous to others | B.others may keep away from him |
C.he should pass it on to someone else | D.it will stick with him for the whole school year |
A.Active but strange. | B.Noisy and impolite. |
C.Humorous but impolite. | D.Crazy and impatient. |
A.Peter Uteger broke the class rule in the fifth grade. |
B.The kids in the class don’t play with Jeremy Pindle now. |
C.Christoper Ziegel is among the cleverest kids in the class. |

China started to build the BDS 30 years ago. Back in 1978, the US already started providing navigation services with its GPS. However, depending on a navigation system from another country is not safe.
In 2020, after over 20 years of hard work, Beidou completed its global network. The BDS became the fourth global navigation system after the GPS of the United States, Galileo of the European Union and GLONASS of Russia.
The BDS is the first navigation satellite system to provide a global short message communication service. It means you can text others in places without phone signal or internet. For example, in February 2023, a hiker got lost in heavy snow in Inner Mongolia. He sent a text message using the BDS-powered chip in his phone and got saved in time.
Besides, the Beidou system plays an important role in disaster prevention and response (灾害预防和响应). Rescuers (救援人员) can communicate through the BDS quickly and clearly.
No matter where you are in the world, the BDS can help guide your way. By 2023, it had provided service for over 120 countries. “By 2035, China will build a positioning, navigation and timing system with the BDS at its main aim to provide more smart services,” Ran Chengqi, director of the China Satellite Navigation Office, said at a news meeting in 2018.

"I sat out in the car for a long time before I finally went in," Betty says. "But I knew I had to do it."
Betty and her husband lived together happily. When her husband passed away in 2008, everything changed. Soon, Betty realized she needed to ask for help.
"When Dave was still alive, I never thought it would happen," she says. "I never really thought I would have to go to a food bank. I thought I'd be able to keep my job longer, and I thought we'd have more money to save."
Things didn't work out that way. And finally, Betty found herself in need of help, sitting in her car outside Hopelink, working up the courage to take that first step.
Once inside, she felt welcome immediately.
"A dear lady – I think she was a volunteer – came up to me, and whether she saw that I was scared … I think so; I feel that way," Betty says. "And she said, 'you know, there's a lot of us that have to come here.' And I went into the food bank, and it was wonderful. I learned there were other people having a hard time … it wasn't just me."
Betty started visiting the food bank twice a month, and began to look forward to it. It gave her a chance to get out of the house and dress up a bit – often in her favorite color pink – and meet other people and check in with the regular volunteers.
While Hopelink has helped Betty stay healthy and independent in her later years, it's knowing that someone cares that means the most.
"I appreciate Hopelink, I really do," Betty says. "They've helped me in a million ways since Dave died. And without them, I don't know what I would do. Without the food bank, I'm not sure I could make it. I know I couldn't."
Since 1971, Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families and individuals in King and Snohomish counties; providing stability (稳定) and helping people get the skills and knowledge they need to exit poverty for good.
