When I was about 12, I had an “enemy”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn’t a good student. Sometimes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with(忍受)her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and make the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. ”
I did as he told me and I was very surprised to discover that about half the things were true.
I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know the truth about yourself better than any other people. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”
Many years have passed. The situation often appears in my mind. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure(珍惜)all your life!

Gregg Wallace -Foodie- (美食家) | In the first years of living alone, I preferred to eat sandwiches, fry ups and McDonald’s. If I could go back to my younger self, I’d tell him to start eating more healthily. I’d say, “Hi, mate, learn to cook!A whole new world will open up for you.” |
Gregory Porter -Jazz singer- | When I was 30, I thought I had a heart problem. The doctor said, “There’s nothing wrong with you.” I went to a therapist (心理医生), and she brought up my father, and right away said, “that’s what’s wrong with you.” For years, I had lots of pain because I seldom communicated with my father. I went to his funeral (葬礼), person to person said to me, “Your father when he was singing, it was a beautiful thing. ”So he didn’t leave me nothing. And I don’t have any pain anymore. |
Noel Clarke -Actor- | My younger self didn’t realize the challenges he would face. I’m glad he was naive. As an actor like me, there is a lack (缺少) of respect and chances. I have to achieve 10 times more than other people to be considered near their level. I’m glad my younger self dared to rush, because if he had the knowledge I have now, it might have stopped him. |

【推荐3】Days ago, I made a skirt for a friend’s daughter. Today, when I walked in the door, I noticed the light shining on my answering machine. It was my friend saying, “I know you worked hard on the skirt and it looks very nice, but Janet doesn’t like all those flowers. Could you change them?”
I was angry and wanted to call her back. Then I suddenly thought of Grandma and what she had once done for me long ago.
It was a summer when I was eight. One day, Grandma decided to curl (使卷曲) my hair. She spent a long time on each curl, and I could tell she enjoyed doing that.
When she was finished, she was so proud. She made me stand on a chair to look in the mirror. My heart went cold.
“You can go out and play now,” Grandma said, smiling.
I nodded and slowly walked toward the door. I looked out of the small window in the door and could see some kids playing outside. My best friend, Ducky, saw me and waved for me to come outside, but I couldn’t move. I knew everyone would laugh at the curls. At the same time, I couldn’t go back and tell Grandma how I felt.
Finally I went into Grandma’s room and said in a scared voice, “Grandma, my hair’s too curly.”
She didn’t say a word. She placed a comb (梳子) in water, combed out all my curls, and then stood me back on the chair so I could see in the mirror. Then I went off to play.
It was when Grandma took out my curls that I knew she loved me. She had put my feelings before hers. And that is the kind of love I try to pass on today.
I called my friend back. “I’d be glad to change the flowers,” I said.

At the weekend after Dad’s diagnosis (诊断), Mom sent the same text to each concerned relative and friend: Jay was diagnosed with Pick’s disease. We were going back to the doctor for more information. Then Mom put down the phone, rubbed her forehead, and suggested that we go for a drive. On the interstate, we passed a board with clear red letters: “Fredericksburg peaches, the best fruit you can find in Central Texas.” Mom went to negotiate with the stand owner.
Now in our kitchen, the sweet smell of peach juice drifted into the living room and pulled Dad away from the football game on TV.
“Oh! You got peaches?” he eyed the fruit with childish glee (欢喜).
“Here,” I handed him a knife. “We’re making peach pie.”
I showed him how to peel the skin off. As I made pie dough, he asked questions: How long does it take to bake? Are you adding sugar? How many peaches? What should I do with the seeds? Showing him how to slice, measure and mix them in a calm, firm voice, I suddenly felt grown-up.
The summer had reversed our roles. Now, I was the adult. I stayed home all summer, cooked dinner for him, washed his T-shirts and helped him make phone calls. I stayed up late thinking about him and monitored him like an anxious caretaker.
The same day, before the afternoon drive and peach pie, I had held my tears as I read the diagnosis for Pick’s disease: four to ten years, depending on how fast the damaged proteins overpower Dad’s brain. I decided then that I would be grateful for just four more years with Dad, enough for him to see me become an adult for real.

So there are more and more traffic accidents on the roads. Thanks to the efforts of the traffic police, it is said the number of traffic accidents across China in 2019 was 25.2 percent fewer than that in 2018 during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day.
Tomb-sweeping Day, is also known as Qingming Festival. It is an important occasion for Chinese to honor their ancestors(祖先). Most people go home in memory of their ancestors on that day. About 9.78 million Chinese visited cemeteries to honor their ancestors or relatives during the holiday. So transportation safety is a big problem.
On the other hand, it is said Chinese have made 112 million trips during the holiday, up 10.9 percent from last year's holiday. For the traffic accidents, some people lost their lives. This year, traffic accidents caused 10 deaths during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day.
The fewer traffic accidents are all from the efforts of the police and our government. With the development of society and the government's efforts, I believe everything will change better.

The major cause of the problem was people. The spread of civilization(文明) destroyed many of the eagles' feeding and nesting areas. And the eagles were being affected by D-D-T and other insect poisons. The poisons were in the animals the eagles ate. They reduced the eagles' ability(能力) to use calcium(钙). This made the outside of the eagles' eggs very thin. Often, the eggs broke before baby birds were developed.
In 1972, the U. S. government banned(禁止) D-D-T. People also became interested in protecting places where eagles live. And stronger efforts were made to carry out laws protecting the birds. Scientists began a program that placed baby bald eagles which were born under human care, into nests of wild bald eagles. Often, the wild birds accepted the babies.
These efforts appear to have been successful in saving the American bald eagles. Today the number of the bald eagles has increased to more than 11, 000.

First of all, it's important to find that not all plant cells have a cell wall. Besides, there are many differences of a cell wall based on the kinds of plant. The following is meant to be what a plant cell wall is like.
The cell wall of a plant is on the outside of the cell membrane (膜). It is usually hard and cannot be bent easily, but the degree of flexibility (韧性) of the cell wall is different. It is based on the special use that the cell has in keeping the plant alive. Cells that make up the trunk of a tree are clearly less flexible than cells on a leaf.
Cell walls act in many ways. They serve to protect the plant. They provide support, as well as help in the movement of chemicals and wastes into and out of the cell. More importantly, they control the water that goes in and out. Plants must have good water controlling systems (系统), allowing them to keep water during dry seasons, and get rid of unnecessary water. Plants can't walk around to find water, so being able to control water is very important.
So there you have it , what a plant cell wall is. Of course, there are many other things that are not talked about here. Knowing more about plant cell wails requires further study and research.

Others grow up small and unhealthy. In search of food, hungry deer move closer to where humans live. They eat farm crops, vegetables and even trees. Besides, increased numbers of deer near roads can cause traffic accidents.
People admire the grace and fast speed of deer. Most people don't want these animals to be hungry and ill. Should people take action to control the growing deer populations?
*Should People Take Direct Action?
Many people think that hunting(打猎)is the best way to control the animal populations. Wildlife managers will see if there's enough food in an area and decide its carrying capacity(容量). Then hunters with licenses are sent to help control the number of deer. Hunting is usually not allowed in cities or suburbs, however.
Some people have the idea to catch the deer and move them to other places. But this method is expensive and requires finding another place that can accept the deer without breaking the balance of ecosystem(生态系统).
Scientists are also working to develop chemicals(化学药品)to control the birth rate(率)in deer populations. But this plan works for only one year at a time.
*Should People Take Indirect Action?
Some suggest bringing in natural enemies of deer, such as wolves, lions and bears, to areas with too many deer. But these animals could also hurt dogs, cats, and even humans. Other communities have built tall fences(篱笆)around areas to keep out the deer. However, this is impossible for farmers.
*Should People Do Nothing?
Some people are against any kind of action. They support leaving the deer alone. Animal populations in an area naturally go up and down over time. Doing nothing means that some deer will die of hunger or illness. But finally, the population will reach a size within the carrying capacity of the environment. So, let nature go its own way.
1. According to the passage, increased numbers of deer can bring________ to people in the area.A.water pollution | B.traffic accidents |
