Scientists are not alone in the fight against the novel coronavirus( 新 型 冠 状 病 毒 ), as new technologies and innovative(创新的) products are giving them a hand. Here are some examples.
Big date (大数据)
Our smartphones send data to telecom companies around the clock, telling these companies where we have been and where we are going. Chinese telecom companies provide governments with this data. They use the data to track ( 追 踪 ) traffic flows among different provinces and cities. By tracking how many people are coming and going out of Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, telecom companies can send warnings to areas that are being visited by large numbers of people from Wuhan.
Drones
Drones (无人机) have played a major role in disinfection (消毒) and preventing cross-infection(交叉感染) in crowded places like hospitals, railway stations and airports.
Police officers use drones to give warnings. For example, if people gather in large groups or do not wear masks, drones with cameras can record and send images of these people in real time to control rooms. The drones will then warn these people.
Robots
Robots are good helpers on the frontlines. They are used at hospitals to offer medical advice, deliver drugs or meals, act like guides, perform disinfection, measure patients’ body temperatures and do other repetitive work. In this way, robots can not only help greatly reduce the burden for medical workers, but also reduce the risk of cross-infection. They have also been used in public places like train stations and airports to check temperatures.

Madison Checketts loves beaches. But she often sees the sand covered with plastic bottles. “This needs to change,” she told Smithsonian magazine.
The 12-year-old from the US created a new kind of water bottle. People can actually eat it! The idea comes from the “popping boba” in bubble(气泡)tea drinks. A thin piece of jelly(胶状物)keeps the juice inside.
Checketts learned how to make this online. First, she put some chemicals(化学物质)together. Then she froze(冷冻)them to make the jelly. After some tries, she made her own hand-sized “bubble” with water inside!
People can bite(咬)a hole at the top of the bubble, drink the water and then either eat the “bottle” or throw it away. It can break down without polluting the environment. Checketts said the bottle felt like a gummy bear(小熊软糖)and tasted a bit sweet.
In the future, Chcckotts will run more tests to make the water bottle stronger and bigger. She wants her water bottle to be used during the marathon; a long running race. As runners stop for water, they can get a bubble, drink the water and either eat or throw the bubble. “I hope people can understand that everyone can make the world a better place,” she said.

It may sound silly, but it’s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display (显示屏).
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make “digital cloth”. After testing different combinations, they chose two materials but worked: a silver-plated yarn (镀银纱) that can light up and a kind of thread (纺线) that conducts (传导) electricity.
The results have been admirable. It’s not only wearable and fold able, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry cycles in a washing machine and folded 10,000 times, the cloth remained almost unchanged.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language barriers (障碍) or disabilities.
In one test, Peng’s team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or. The waves were then translated into messages like “anxious” or “relaxed” and shown on the cloth. This could help deaf-mute (聋哑的) people “talk” to each other in the future.
“We hope that new materials will shape next-generation electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them.” said Peng.

The invention of paper ended the complex(复杂的) history of ancient writing and greatly promoted(促进) the spread and development of culture.
Paper is an important invention in ancient China. Writing was developed gradually from ancient times when people depended mainly on writing instruments for making ropes. At first, oracle bone(甲骨) was used as a writing material. Bamboo, wood and silk were also discovered and used during the Spring and Autumn Period. But as silk was too expensive and the bamboo pieces were too heavy, paper was produced. Thanks to the invention and popularization of paper, people could no longer use stone, wood, metal and other materials to record writing or pictures, and a large amount of ancient information was spread and preserved.
Paper is quite useful in our life. It is the carrier of writing and printing. Painters use it to describe the beauty of the world, writers use it to tell the warmth of the world, and educators use it to spread knowledge.
It is also used for packaging(打包). Harder cardboard is used to pack things, such as delivery boxes(快递盒). Of course, it can also be used for other purposes, such as printing paper, toilet paper, and so on.
All in all, paper plays a significant role in our lives and is used for all kinds of purposes: to write, to paint…

However, solar panels also have their disadvantages. They can’t produce energy all the time and they stop working at night and on rainy days. Then a question comes: Is it possible to make them produce electricity all the time?
Scientists at Suzhou University, China, have invented a new solar panel. It can produce electricity not only from solar energy but also from the falling rain. When a raindrop falls on the solar panel and then rolls(滚动)down, it creates friction(摩擦力)on the surface of the panel, which can then be turned into electricity.
Sun Baoquan is one of the inventors. “Our new invention can produce electricity almost in any weather during the day,” he says. “It can even provide electricity at night if there is rain.”
The solar panel, however, does not make a lot of electricity from falling rain. So Sun Baoquan is still working hard to improve it. The scientist also wants to make solar panels more flexible, which can be as soft as clothing. Solar energy is a kind of clean, safe and cheap energy. The field of solar energy is developing fast. By doing this, we will be in good health. And well also be rich and clever. It’s true that our bodies need to have enough sleep to be healthy. Children should have a ten-hour sleep every night. Those who do not have enough sleep can’t do their work very well. They will not be clever and they may not get wealthy in the future.
The body needs exercise, too. Walking, running, jumping, riding bikes and playing games are all exercise. Exercise helps to keep the body strong and fit. It also helps the blood(血液)to move around inside the body. The blood takes food to all parts of the body. The head needs blood, too. So exercise helps people think better.

in 1979. They have provided valuable information of how different types of birds are doing, and whether their populations are going up or down.
More than 11 million birds were counted in 2022. The house sparrow (麻雀) was the most commonly seen garden bird. But its numbers were lower than in 2021.However, there was a rise in green finch numbers. Hopefully, the birds may be recovering (恢复) from a big drop in the population over the last 30 years.
Almost 60,000 schoolchildren took part in the survey, and that included spending an hour in nature counting different types of birds. Wood pigeons (鸽子) were the most commonly seen by schools. Blackbirds came a close second.
“It’s been exciting to see so many people taking part this year,” said Rebecca Speight, an officer of the RSPB. “pring is a great time to watch and reconnect with birds. It sees the return of nature's biggest music festival. Open your back door, a window or simply step outside and listen.”
