How do foreigners learn Chinese?
老外如何学中文
If you find it hard to learn English, think of the foreigners who learn Chinese. The number of people learning Chinese around the world reached 100 million in 2017, up from 30 million in 2004, according to People’s Daily. Europe’s first Chinese-English primary school recently opened in the British capital of London.
But do you know how foreigners learn Chinese? What difficulties do they usually meet when learning about Chinese culture? And how do they overcome these difficulties? Mike Fuksman, Teens’ foreign editor from the United States, has lived in China for more than seven years. He wants to share his story of learning Chinese.
Like many foreigners, I only knew two words of Chinese ( “hello” and “thank you” ) when I came to China in 2009. As you can probably guess, my life was difficult for a while after I arrived. Simple tasks like ordering food or taking a taxi were quite stressful.
I knew I had to learn more Chinese, so I signed up for a class. My teacher was very helpful, although I didn’t learn enough to have a real conversation. Later I studied on my own as well, but my progress was still slow. I became very upset.
Finally, I found that the best way to learn Chinese is to make friends with native speakers and spend time with them. Around this time, I started playing in a band with a Chinese woman who became one of my best friends in Beijing. I learned a lot of Chinese by hanging out with her.
For example, she taught me a lot of words about music, such as “melody”. She learned a lot of English from me in return, so it was a good way to exchange language and culture. She is still one of my best friends and we talk to each other nearly every day.
I’ve learned enough Chinese to take care of difficult tasks, such as booking train tickets and negotiating with my landlord. However, going to the bank and understanding technological vocabulary are still tough for me.
These days, there are more foreigners who are studying Chinese. I can understand why it’s a fascinating language. There are always new words waiting to be discovered.

He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code (二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class learning how to make the codes, and in the end everything got easier,” said Guo. “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then each student makes his/her own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their homework everywhere using my computer or telephone.”
The QR codes can be sent to Mr Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Guo scans his students’ QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo’s students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information ago. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun.” said Tingting, a student of Guo’s.
“The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share.” Guo said, “It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don’t want my students to fall behind the times.”
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it’s unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their homework, which doesn’t take them too much time. The company plans to work closely with the publishers(出版商) of textbooks so that these books can be supplied on the Internet. All the students will have to do is to download their textbooks from the Internet. Taking notes and marking important parts of a lesson can be done just as lots of students have done on their textbooks before.
At present, the plan is being tested out in a university. Richard Katzmann, the owner of this company is having his creation tested at Chicago's DePaul University, where he studied. Does that mean it is goodbye to the new paper, and the smell of the black ink?

You have to shake hands when you’re coming or going in Germany, but in Britain you usually only shake hands when you meet someone for the first time. You have to give your present in public in the Middle East to show it’s not a bribe (贿赂), but it’s good manners to give your present in private in Asia. You mustn’t give cutlery (刀具) in Latin America because it suggests that you want to cut off the relationship. You mustn’t give food or drink in Saudi Arabia because it suggests you think your hosts aren’t offering you enough to eat and drink. You mustn’t give a clock in China because the Chinese word for clock is similar to the word for funeral (葬礼). Offices are usually closed on Fridays in Moslem countries. Americans usually mean “Yes” when they nod their heads. An English person probably just means “I understand”, and an Asian is just showing interest.
