A poor farmer had a famous friend who grew the wonderful apples. One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant it.
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would take the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and take some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.
Finally he planted the tree in his woods (树林) where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil (土壤), the tree soon died.
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. “What’s the difference?” the farmer said angrily. “If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have taken the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and taken some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit.”
“Yes,” said the friend, “but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only haven’t got any of the fruit, but also have lost a good apple tree!”

"I don't want to sit there," Mary thought immediately. But a soft voice spoke, “She needs help.” Finally, Mary moved to that seat.
The girl was named Emily. She had been in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment. When the snack and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself. But there’re always those mornings when a few unwanted customers come in. Maybe they are late for work, or simply wake up late. They often make a short loud request for coffee without looking at me directly. It is hard to stand. And some customers are just discourteous and they believe that customers are always right, even if they act like fools. Things like good manners are often unseen in such situations.
Just like me, Austin Simms of Cups Coffee and Tea has had enough of this. To help some customers with their manners, he placed a sign outside showing their new pricing method.
His new sign shows the cost of a cup of coffee as $5. If a customer walks up to the server and simply says, “Small coffee,” he/she will need to pay $5 for that small coffee. The price goes down to $3 if a customer says, “Small coffee, please.” The coffee only costs $1.75 if the customer says, “Hello. A cup of small coffee, please.” So you can see that customers who show the best manners get the largest discounts (折扣).
The new way certainly has got some people to rethink their manners. We can be sure that at least some customers have become polite, and that’s a good thing, even if they do it just to get discounted coffee. The more you do something, the more you get used to it. So, this method could actually end up making many people more polite.

When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism( 孤 独 症 ). He sometimes had random outbursts(随意发作)during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn’t know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating Derek, and laughing about it.
Then one day, Derek’s mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn’t just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person’s mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.
After this talk, no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him. We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends. Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us. My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.

In 1856, a British survey team measured the height of Qomolangma. Their result showed that Qomolangma reached a height of 8,840 meters above sea level. In 1955, the figure (数据) was rewritten by an Indian team to 8,848 meters, and later to 8,850 meters according to a US team in 1999. And in 2005, a Chinese team got a height of 8,844 meters.
It is not an easy task to measure the height of Qomolangma. The average air temperature on the mountain is -29 °C and powerful winds blow all the time. In such extreme conditions, surveying drones (无人机) cannot work at the top of the mountain. That's why it's still necessary to send human experts to the top to get exact results.
Measuring the height of Qomolangma is much more than just getting an exact number. Lying at the place where the Eurasian Plate (板块) meets the Indian Plate, Mount Qomolangma formed 38 million years ago as a result of the two plates hitting, which makes it the perfect window for studying crustal (地壳的) movements. Changes to the mountain's height can suggest whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other.
The survey team will also get firsthand information about the condition of the snow and other natural materials at the top, which could be a sign of climate change on the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau (青藏高原) .

If Planet Nine is out there, why haven’t we found it yet? Scientists are still reaching for it because it’s so far away. They believe it could take Planet Nine as long as 20,000 years to go around the Sun. Scientists also think Planet Nine could be as much as 10,000 times darker than Pluto.
