All the planets in the solar system go around the sun. There are eight planets in the solar system. Years ago, there were nine planets. Ever since Pluto (冥王星) was demoted (使降级), we’ve had just eight planets.

Some scientists have studied the farthest reaches(研究)of our solar system. They believe there might be another planet out there. They call it Planet Nine. What would Planet Nine be like? Scientists believe it could be about three times larger and ten times heavier than the earth.

If Planet Nine is out there, why haven’t we found it yet? Scientists are still reaching for it because it’s so far away. They believe it could take Planet Nine as long as 20,000 years to go around the Sun. Scientists also think Planet Nine could be as much as 10,000 times darker than Pluto.

It is very difficult to search for such a dark planet in the whole solar system. Could our solar system have a ninth planet? We hope to know the answer in the near future.

1. From the first paragraph, we can know Pluto          .
A.goes around the Earth
B.was a planet years ago
C.was not demoted
2. Scientists think Planet Nine may be          .
A.three times larger than the sun
B.out of the solar system
C.ten times heavier than the earth
3. We haven’t found Planet Nine yet because          .
A.it’s far and dark
B.it doesn’t go around the sun
C.it’s large and heavy
4. From the passage, we know that         .
A.scientists are still reaching for Planet Nine
B.it is easy to search for such a dark planet
C.our solar system can’t have a ninth planet
5. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A.Solar SystemB.Dark PlutoC.Planet Nine

1】What’s the most important thing you need to live on? Without water, humans, plants and animals cannot live. NASA scientists have been studying Mars (火星) to see if humans could make a home there in the future. So the first thing they must look for is water.

Well, after years of studies, NASA scientists have found that there is water on the planet! But you would not want to drink it. The water would be too salty for humans to drink, but this is a step in the right direction.

“To ‘follow the water’ isn’t an easy job. We have spent such a long time on our studies,” said NASA astronaut John Grunsfeld. “Now we have science that shows what we’ve thought.”

Scientists found frozen (结冰的) water on Mars back in 2008, but for things to live on the planet, there has to be liquid (液体的) water.

The first time they thought there could be water on Mars was two years later. At that time dark long marks appeared going downhill when the temperature went up on the planet. But why do they think it is water?

“The finding of hydrated (含水的) salts means that water plays an important part in forming these marks,” said Lujendra, author of the NASA study.

What they found is too salty, so it might not be the best for living things. But this gives NASA scientists hope that there could be living things on the planet.

Do you think it might be possible for humans to fly to Mars and build another home there one day? Do you want to be a scientist who might make it come true?

根据短文内容,判断下列句子正(T)、误(F)。
1. NASA scientists have been studying Mars to look for living things.
2. It took NASA scientists many years to find that there is water on Mars.
3. The dark long marks appeared going downhill when the temperature rose.
4. According to NASA scientists, salts play an important part in forming the dark marks.
5. The hydrated salts make NASA scientists hope there could be living things on Mars.

【推荐2】When we talk about the universe, we mean not only the earth, the sun and the moon, but also the stars and space between them. There are millions of stars in our sky. The sun is one of them. Around it there are eight big planets moving, including the earth. The moon is our nearest neighbour in space. If you look at the sky on a clear night, it is possible to see about 3,000 stars. They look small, but they are really very big hot balls of burning(燃烧着的) gas. Some of them are huge, but others are much smaller like our planet Earth. The biggest stars are very bright, but they can only live for a short time. Every day new stars are born and old stars die.

All the stars are very far away. The light from the nearest star (except the sun) takes more than four years to reach the earth.

Hundreds of years ago, people used stars, like the North Star, to know which direction(方向) to travel in. Today you can still see that star.

1. The universe means ________.
A.the earthB.the sun, the moon and the stars
C.space between the starsD.All of the above.
2. The light from the nearest star (except the sun) takes more than ________ to get to the earth.
A.four yearsB.1,000 daysC.100 yearsD.four light years
3. People used to look at the North Star ________.
A.when they were workingB.to tell them when to do farm work
C.while they were travellingD.just for fun

【推荐3】We live on Earth. It’s our home. But how much do you know about it? Let me tell you something about our Earth.

The Earth is not flat as we see but it is like a huge sphere in the space. Like the other seven planets (行星), the Earth is running around the Sun. It’s the third nearest one to the Sun. It takes the Earth about 365 days to run around the Sun.

At the same time, the Earth is going around itself. If you are in space, you can see lots of white clouds over the surface (表面) of the Earth. Through the clouds, you can see the blue colour of the oceans, and the brown colour of the land. About 70% of the Earth is covered with water. Why do we have day and night? When the half of the Earth is facing the Sun, it’s daytime. As the Earth turns, and this half is away from the Sun, night is coming. And it’s daytime for the other half.

1. How many planets are running around the Sun?
A.Seven.B.Eight.C.Nine.D.Ten.
2. The underlined word “sphere” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.

A.the Earth is away from the SunB.the Earth is running around the Sun
