On April 5, Queen Elizabeth II gave a short but powerful speech to inspire (激励) the British people. The UK, like many countries around the world, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic (冠状病毒流行) . Many people have to stay at home and many businesses have been closed.

In her speech, the Queen thanked people of all walks of life (各行各业) for both following stay-at-home rules and making efforts to help their neighbors. She also thanked the country’s medical workers as they continue to fight the virus.

The Queen talked about her first-ever radio broadcast—delivered in 1940—when she and her sister Margaret spoke to children who had been evaluated ( 撤 离 ) from their homes during World War II. Fearing that German bombing ( 轰 炸 ) would kill people in the cities, millions of children in England were sent to safer places in the countryside.

“Echoes (再现) of that struggle of the 1940s, which for so long defined (定义) Britain and its self-image, ran through the broadcast,” the BBC said.

She ended the speech with a familiar phrase: “We will meet again.” It’s a reference   ( 引 用 ) to Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again, a song that encouraged unity (团结) and optimism (乐观) among Britons during the World War II. With her speech, the Queen hoped to encourage national unity.

The Bird Mask

Today, doctors know a lot about how to stop germs (病菌) from spreading. They suggest people cover their mouths when they cough.     1

However, people haven’t always known about germs. For many years, even doctors didn’t really understand how illnesses spread.     2     Some doctors even tried dressing like birds.

In 1619, the French doctor, Charles de Lorme, invented a special uniform. He hoped it could protect doctors who were treating plague (瘟疫) patients. The uniform had a long coat, gloves, boots (靴子) and a hat.

The doctors also carried sticks so they wouldn’t have to touch the patients. The most special part of the uniform was the mask (面具).

3     It had a beak (鸟嘴) that was about 15 cm long. There were also two eyeholes cowered in glass and two nostril (鼻孔) holes.

At that time, doctors believed the plague was spread by bad air. Any air that had a bad smell was dangerous.     4     They believed this could stop them from breathing the bad air and they wouldn’t get sick because of the plague.

Did it work? Well, not really. Certainly the germs sometimes traveled through the air, and the flowers weren’t able to stop them.     5

Some forms of plague only spread through certain animals such as mice. The doctors’ uniform helped to protect them from this danger. However, largely the coat, gloves, boots and hat did the job, not the bird mask.

A.The bird mask helped to protect the doctors from this danger.
B.Many doctors still got sick by breathing through the nostril holes in their masks.
C.The mask made the doctors look like birds.
D.So the doctors put flowers in the beak of their masks.
E.They did many things to avoid getting sick.
F.Washing your hands often also helps.
G.Many people got sick when they breathed bad air.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了帕金森病以及一项关于太极拳对帕金森病影响的研究。

【推荐3】Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病) is the second most common neurodegenerative (神经退行性) disease worldwide. It affects about 1% to 2% of people aged 65 and over. As the global population ages, the prevalence (流行率) of Parkinson’s disease will increase greatly. Nowadays, more than 6 million people worldwide have Parkinson’s disease, and there are about 60,000 new patients each year.

A recent study was carried out by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The study monitored the health of hundreds of Parkinson’s patients for up to five years. They studied two groups of people. One group of 147 people practised regular (有规律的) tai chi, aided by training class to improve their technique. The traditional Chinese exercise combines slow gentle movements with deep breathing and relaxation. The other group of 187 patients continued with their common care, but didn’t practise tai chi.

After five years of study, the researchers found that Parkinson’s disease progressed more slowly in the tai chi group. This group also saw fewer falls, less back pain and fewer memory problems than the other group. At the same time, sleep and quality of life continuously improved. An earlier test of people with Parkinson’s who practised tai chi for six months found greater improvements in walking, posture (姿态) and balance than those not on the programme. Experts say the findings support earlier studies on the benefits of exercise for those with Parkinson’s.

Writing in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, researchers say their study shows that tai chi has the long-term beneficial effects on Parkinson’s disease, which include making quality of life last longer, reducing the task on nursing care and drug (药物) use, while still helping to keep patients active. Tai chi has a potential improvement effect on both motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease patients. They also find that tai chi training is safe for patients with early primary Parkinson’s disease.

This was an observational (观察性的) study, so the relationship between tai chi and improvement in Parkinson’s disease could not be sure. But the researchers will continue to study it.

1. The second paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A.the background of the studyB.the purpose of the study
C.the process of the studyD.the result of the study
2. What do you know about tai chi from the observational study?
A.Parkinson’s disease progressed quickly for the tai chi group.
B.Tai chi can take the place of drug use for Parkinson’s patients.
C.Parkinson’s patients can benefit a lot from doing tai chi regularly.
D.It’s unsafe for early primary Parkinson’s patients to practice tai chi.
3. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain how Parkinson’s patients practice tai chi.
B.To discuss about the importance of studying Parkinson’s disease.
C.To suggest some proper ways of improving people’s quality of life.
D.To introduce a study about the influence of tai chi on Parkinson’s disease.
