The earliest reports of circles were around 1940, although they had probably occurred for many years before that. But it was not until the 1970s that people began to take photographs of the circle sand to discuss how they were made.
Many of the people who have reported circles say that first they saw lights in the sky or heard loud noises and then, afterwards, they discovered circular marks (圆形的标记) on the ground.
Most of the reports come from Australia, where the circles have usually occurred in fields of corn. In the United States of America, circles have formed in woods, bending trees almost flat. And Canada has one of the only reports of someone being present as a circle was actually forming.
In Brazil, in 1969, a lot of people watched as a bright light over a grassy area for about 45 minutes. When the light had gone, they found a circle of flattened grass.
A woman in France reported a circle which formed very close to her house after she had seen a bright light in the sky. In Russia, some scientists reported hearing strange voices and then seeing a huge ‘space machine’ take off before they discovered a large circle where the machine had stood. And there are reports of circles occurring as far apart as Japan, Switzerland and New Zealand, as well as in Scotland and England.

It’s hard to imagine a place that’s more dangerous than Death Valley. Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America. It also has the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere (西半球)! Although the natural condition in Death Valley is terrible, here is full of life.
Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets little rain a year, so there isn’t much water. In July, temperatures often climb to over 46℃. The ground is mostly sand and rocks. There is even a dried-up lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体).
None of these stops plants and animals from making Death Valley their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 36 kinds of reptiles (爬行动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either. There are big ones like mountain lions.
Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives in Death Valley. Some plants have roots that go fifty feet under the surface to find water.
