F. Scott Fitzgerald, born on September 24, 1896, an American novelist, was once a student of St. Paul Academy, the Newman School and attended Princeton University for a short while.

In 1917 he joined the army and was sent to Alabama, where he met his future wife Zelda Sayre. Then he had to make some money to impress her.

His life with her was full of great happiness, as he wrote in his diary: “My own happiness in the past often approached such joy that I could share it even with the person dearest to me but had to walk it away in quiet streets and take down parts of it in my diary.”

This side of Paradise, his first novel, was published in 1920. Encouraged by its success, Fitzgerald began to spend more time on his writing. Then he continued with the novel the Beautiful and Damned (1922), a collection of short stories Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), and a play The Vegetable (1923). But his greatest successful novel, The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, which quickly brought him praise from the literary(文学) world. Yet it failed to give him the needed financial security. Then, in 1926, he published another collection of short stories All the Sad Young Men.

However, Fitzgerald’s problems with his wife Zelda affected his writing. During the 1920s he tried to reorder his life, but failed. By 1930, his wife had her first mental breakdown and went to a Swiss hospital. During this period he completed novels Tender Is the Night in 1934. 【推荐1】Dear Boris,
Thanks for your nice letter.
After I had spent a week with my English family, I slowly began to understand their English a little better. It’s very different from what I learned at school! Students in my group are from different cities of Britain and their dialects (方言) are different too! Some of their accents (口音) are quite strong and they also have their own words and expressions.
But it’s not the language that’s different and surprising. Before I came to England I had thought that fish and chips were eaten every day. That’s quite wrong! I get rather mad now when I hear all the foolish words about typical (典型的) English food.
I had expected to see “London fog”. Do you remember our texts about it? We had no idea that most of this ‘thick fog’ disappeared many years ago when people stopped using coal in their homes. But the idea to speak about the weather was very helpful. The weather in London is really changeable.
On the other hand habits are different. People tell me what is typically British here in London is not always typical in Wales or Scotland. Local habits and traditions are not the same as what we knew.
But what is ordinary for all British is that they follow traditions. Probably Britain has more living signs of its past than many other countries. And people have always been proud of having ancient buildings in capitals, big cities and the countryside.
I will tell you more about Britain in my other letters.
Love from Britain,
Peter

【推荐2】Although I had left school against the advice of my teacher, I had, without telling anyone, tried to continue my studies in literature at evening classes. It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent, I put up with it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter’s nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home.
By chance, I won some prizes and rewards for literature. A young woman from a TV company came to the college one day. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said, “No, I couldn’t do that.” Not that I had any real excuse, I was just frightened. In the end she advised me that I should do it the following day.
So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my poems and I became more interested in literature than ever. I wondered what I should do after this, and decided some weeks later that I could not imagine myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly(支吾其词地) told my parents that I wanted to return to school. They wanted to know if I was sure, if I knew what it meant and whether I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be very difficult to get a good job. But nothing could stop me, and they asked about the matter on future.

D.Whether it was worth leaving school for job training.
2. The writer did NOT feel comfortable at the evening school because __________.
A.he found it difficult to make friends with his classmates
B.he had to walk a long distance to the evening school
C.he could not put his heart into reading books after he was caught in the rain
D.all of the above
3. After his success, he __________.
A.decided to get a good job
B.decided to continue his studies in literature at the evening school
C.decided to return to the school he once left
D.began to feel very important and proud

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者长大后再次来到农村度假,被露营的游客扔满了垃圾的现状所震撼,随即与朋友们一起捡垃圾的故事。

【推荐3】Last summer I went on holiday with my family to our friends’ summer house in the countryside near a national park. We used to go there every year when we were little, but we hadn’t been back for years. I had really nice memories of the place as a young child, boating on the lake and walking through the fields nearby. When we were little, our parents had always taught us to respect the countryside and wildlife and leave no mark, and that’s what we always did.

On the first morning after we arrived, we decided to go hiking around the lake. But instead of the beautiful area I remembered, it was just a mess. It looked like people had camped near the lake and just left all their things there. I had read about this before: it’s called “fly-camping”. Instead of staying at campsites, people who fly-camp want to travel light, so they only buy basic camping tools, then just leave all their things there in the wild.

We picked up the rubbish and took it into the local village to throw it away properly. While we were there, we decided to have lunch at a café and spoke to the owner. We told her about how we had visited here when we were younger and how it hadn’t been a problem then. “It’s got really bad over the last few years. It’s almost like people think it’s a waste dump (垃圾场),” she said. “The other day, I was walking my dog over there and he came running back to me. He had found some food boxes, and one of them had stuck to his face and he couldn’t get it off. Poor thing.” She also said she’d reported it to an environmental organization, but they hadn’t been able to do anything yet.

After that, we decided to spend another day picking up the rubbish we found. We used some big bags we had brought from the village and filled them up every day. I hope the situation gets better in the future.

A.To show the rubbish problem.B.To share a funny pet story.
C.To draw attention to her café.D.To talk about the local wildlife.
4. How did the writer spend most of his time on holiday?
A.Going to parties.B.Picking up rubbish.
