Last year, I went to a summer camp in the United Sates with my classmates. It was my first time to go abroad.
I lived with a host family in Los Angeles for five days. My host family was friendly and gave me lots of advice. For example, they said I should say “excuse me” if I have to interrupt(打断)someone or ask for directions.
I also took some classes. They were different from the classes I’ve had back home. In the US, each class is like a seminar. Students join in groups, speaking freely and creating a cheerful atmosphere(氛围). I had to work hard to learn more vocabularies, so that I could better communicate with my international classmates. I used to play little attention to my word usage(使用),but now I pay more attention.
During my visit, I also went to some famous universities in Boston, New York and Washington. We learned abut the history behind the universities. At MIT(麻省理工学院), we saw lots of names on a wall in the hall. The tour guide told us they were the names of students who had lost their lives during wars. I was inspired(鼓舞)by the fact that they fought for their country.

The movie tells a true story of Liz Murray. Liz was born in a poor family. Liz had no money for food or clothes. She was the “smelly” kid in school, and her classmates laughed at her.
Later, Liz’s parents got ill. They were not able to look after Liz. Liz lost her home. She had to leave school and sleep on the street—she was 15 years old then.
When her mother died, Liz found she was alone and nobody was around her. At that time she knew only study could change her life. She went back to a public school. A school trip to Harvard planted a dream in Liz’s heart: she was going to study in the university one day. To make it come true, Liz worked hard. In school, she was the first one in and the last one out. After school, she did homework at the underground station. When she did her part-ime job, she studied with notes on the wall. At last, Liz finished high school in two years(it usually takes students four years) and got the highest scores. She won a scholarship(奖学金) and got into Harvard.

Sammy checked his calendar. “Yes!” he cried, jumping out of bed. “I mean NO! It’s Opposite Day (反话日)!” He put his shirt on inside out and walked backward down the hall.
“Good night, Mom,” he said in the kitchen. “Have a bad day at work!” “What’s wrong?” asked mom. “It’s Opposite Day!” Sammy explained.
Sammy and his friends came across at the bus stop and waved. “Good-bye!” they said at the same time.
At school, the kids were going into the door marked Exit (出口). “What’s wrong?” asked the headteacher. “It’s Opposite Day!” said the students.
During math, the kids added when the sign said to subtracts (减法). “What’s wrong?” cried their teacher, Ms. Trix. “It’s Opposite Day!” said the class. “That’s right,” said Ms. Trix. “In that case, there’s no homework tonight.” “Yay!” said the kids. But then they remembered what day it was. Ms. Trix wrote their homework on the board.
That afternoon, Ms. Trix asked the kids to present their book reports. Oh no! thought Sammy. He’d been so excited about Opposite Day that he had left his report at home. “Make something up or tell the truth?”, Sammy thought to himself. “Ms. Trix,” he said when she called on him, “Sorry, I won’t be able to turn in my report today.” Ms. Trix looks at Sammy for a while and laughed. “I get it! This seems so simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to do this. Actually, I notice adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without placing a hand over the mouth. One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. If not, they will be passing those germs (细菌) along to everything and everyone they touch.
If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass through first, then you can walk through. If the door opens by pushing, hold the door after you pass through.
After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and watching them enter restaurants as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of kindness, such as letting someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but it can go a long way toward helping students realize how to be polite and thank others. Once they’ve been told, they’re halfway there.
When we have to go up moving stairs, we will stand to the right. That will give others who are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stairs. When we are going to enter a lift, the underground, or a doorway, we will wait for others to exit before we enter.
1. When you cough or sneeze, you should _______.A.turn your head away from others | B.say, “Excuse me.” |
C.place a hand over the mouth. | D.All of above. |
A.hold the door | B.pass through | C.close the door | D.stand to the side |
A.Because it’s dangerous to stand to the left. |
B.Because it’s a traffic rule which we must follow. |
C.Because we must wait for others to move first. |
D.Because we should make way for people in a hurry. |
A.doctor | B.traveler | C.student | D.teacher |
A.the rules of acts in public | B.the ways of communication in public |
C.the good manners of thanking others | D.the knowledge of the nature. |

Where did water come from?
When it first came into being 4.5 billion years ago, Earth was a dry rock. So where did all of our water come from? Scientists think that it might have arrived in the form of ice by an asteroid(小行星) from outer space that hit our planet. But this theory has not been confirmed because there is very little related evidence(相关证据)to be studied.
What's in the core(地核)?
Scientists used to study meteorites(陨石)as small examples of Earth, believing that Earth's core was made of iron and nickel(镍). However, a later study in the 1950s proved this way to be wrong because it found that Earth would be too light to provide gravity if its core contained only iron and nickel. Today, scientists continue to bring forward different theories, but none have been confirmed.
How was the Moon born?
Scientists have found that the chemical compositions(成分)of Earth and the Moon are very similar. That suggests that the Moon actually came from Earth. For example, it could be a piece of Earth that separated when Earth hit another planet. It is also possible that when Earth first came into being, it spun(旋转)very fast and threw off enough molten(熔化的)rock to later from the Moon.
1. What's the story mainly about?A.How Earth came into being. | B.Where Earth's water came from. |
