There are about 6,000 languages spoken around the world. But 43 percent of these languages are dying out.
This has many reasons. One is that some communities of native speakers of the languages are gone. These people sometimes leave their communities and move to cities or towns. What’s more, to get better education and jobs, young people have to focus their attention on learning more popular languages like English, French and Chinese rather than their own languages.
Once a language dies, it seldom comes back to life. Governments across the world are taking action to prevent this. In New Zealand, the government has said it wants more than 20 percent of the country’s population to be able to speak Maori by 2040. The country plans to provide Maori lessons in all New Zealand schools by 2025. China is also trying to protect its languages. In 2015, the government started a project to record about 130 languages spoken in China. Universities like Minzu University of China have created minority language majors for their students.
Some languages are in danger. It is just a fact. However, all languages are human heritage. When we lose a language, we lose the culture of the people who speak it. Language itself is often the only way to show a certain community’s history and culture, as well as its knowledge of things like math and geography.

One way to produce more food is by growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better.Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly.Since1983 scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic(遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods(转基因食品),or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant,it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. A study from Oxford University has found it seems impossible for men to be doing an equal share of housework before 2050. Mothers will continue to shoulder the burden(负担) of childcare and housework for the next forty years, largely because housework such as cleaning and cooking is still thought of to be “women’s work”.
The gap (鸿沟) has narrowed slowly over the past 40 years. Women expect true equality (平等). But what makes them down is that it will take another forty years before it is achieved.
The research found that in the northern Europe, the burden of housework is shared more equally between men and women. In the UK, a woman spends around four hours and forty minutes each day on housework, compared with two hours and twenty-eight minutes for men. This is an improvement from the 1960s, when British women typically (典型地) spent six hours a day on housework, while men spent just 90 minutes every day.
But progress towards housework equality appears to be slowing in some countries. Dr Oriel Sullivan, a research reader, said, “We’ve looked at what is influencing the equality in the home, and we have found that certain tasks seem to be given according to whether they are viewed as ‘men’s work’ or ‘women’s work’.”
Dr Sullivan said cultural attitudes (态度) taught at school may decide the views of housework. “At school it is much easier for a girl to be a tomboy, but it is much more difficult for a boy to enjoy cooking and dancing,” she said.

Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but one can see the country he is travelling through. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dinning-cars. They even make the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible. There are large luxury liners(客轮) or river boats. They are not as fast as trains or planes, but travelling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.

WAY 1: Bring your own cup to Starbucks. You’ll get a 10-cent discount, and it’s one less paper cup to end up in a dustbin. The store won’t create more waste when they throw away a cup.
WAY 2: Turn off your computer. When in standby mode, your PC is still using energy. Turning off a monitor (显示器) for 40 hours a week may only save $ 5 a month, but it reduces CO2 by 750 pounds.
WAY 3: Reuse plastic bags. Instead of throwing away 100 billion plastic bags a year, try and get a second, third, or tenth use out of them. Better yet, next time you shop, try a reusable bag. The amount of oil it would take to make just 14 plastic bags would run your car for one mile.
WAY 4: Use recycled paper in the bathroom. Most of the toilet paper we use is made from trees found in forests. If every family replaced(替换)one roll of toilet paper with a recycled one, 424,000 trees would still be standing.
WAY 5: Plant a tree. Adding green to your garden is beautiful and earth-pleasing. Just one tree will help make cleaner air and save the environment from 5, 000 pounds of hot carbon dioxide each year.

I am Chris from the United States. I am one of the many people who are learning Chinese. I am studying at a Confucius Institute(孔子学院)in New York. There are 10 students in our class. Some are over thirty years old. Some are middle school students. Our teacher comes from Beijing. He is fun and often tells us interesting things in China.
I think Chinese is difficult to learn. The biggest challenge for American learners is the writing. Chinese is completely different from any other language in the world. It will take me a lot of time to learn enough Chinese characters(汉字). But 1 think there are many benefits (益处) of spending time in learning Chinese. One important benefit is that it makes me see things from a different point of view, because Chinese is such a different language from English.
