If we think of Earth’s natural resources (自然资源) as a bank account (账户), then we have already used up most of the “money” that Earth saved. Have you ever heard of Earth Overshoot Day (EOD, 地球生态超载日)? The Global Footprint Network (全球足迹网络), a nonprofit (非营利的) organization based in the United States, Belgium and Switzerland, calculates (计算) this day. It keeps records of how many new resources the earth can create in one year and how much water, land, fish and forest human beings use, as well as how much CO2 we’re emitting (排放) in one year.

It has been marking EOD since 1971. At first, it was somewhere between September and October. In 2018, EOD was marked on August 1st, and in 2019 it was on July 29th. Each year, the human population grows and more resources are used. That’s why EOD has moved forward by more than two months over the last 20 years.

Human beings are now using natural resources 1.75 times faster than they can be renewed (再生). This has affected the environment in a bad way. For instance, wildfires are becoming more frequent (频繁的). Cities around the world are running out of water. Up to 1,000,000 species (物种) could die out because of human activities. However, humans are taking some small steps to deal with the problem. Countries like China and India are trying their best to green the planet. But there’s still a very long way to go.

1. Which one is true about Earth Overshoot Day?
A.It falls on July 29 every year.B.It is chosen by the United Nations.
C.It has been marked since 1971.D.It reminds people not to shoot animals.

A.The possibility that more wildfires may happen.
B.The speed at which the human population grows.
C.The speed at which humans use natural resources.
D.The possibility that more species may die out.
3. What do we know from the story?
A.Our planet can’t create new resources.
B.Wildfires have destroyed all our natural resources.
C.All Asian countries have found ways to use fewer natural resources.
D.More work needs to be done to solve resource—related problems.

【推荐2】Have you ever heard of a rattlesnake? It is a poisonous(有毒的) American snake. When it is angry or afraid, it makes a noise like a rattle with s tail. It's very scary. But Heather Ramirez and her husband from California, in the United States, make a living in an unusual way. They are self-employed(自雇的) snake catchers! They catch snakes, especially rattlesnakes which have gone indoors, and return them to the wild.

Heather describes her work as "protecting people from rattlesnakes—and protecting rattlesnakes from people!" In the area where they live, rattlesnakes often come face to face with people. They are found in stores, offices, houses and gardens. Heather explains that it's not the snakes that are moving into places where people live, but it's the other way round. The snakes lived in these places first and then the people built houses.

Most people who see a rattlesnake are feared. If you keep your distance, however, the snake won't bite(咬)you. In twelve years as a snake catcher, Heather has never touched a snake. She doesn't take the risk. She picks up the snakes with a special tool. This doesn't hurt them, but it keeps them at a safe distance so that they can't bite her.

Heather and her husband are very busy because they are never off duty. Catching snakes is a full-time job and they don't often have a day off. People can get to them at any time of the day or night. 【推荐3】As the only child of her family, Rena often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. On her birthday, her grandmother bought her a gray puppy. She named it Chloe.

From the very start, Rena and Chloe were always with each other. Every bit of love Rena gave, the little dog returned ten times. “She is my best friend. She’d lick (舔) my face forever unless I stop her,” Rena always said.
