Lisa was a single mother who lived with her little son. She lost her job two years ago and they had a very hard life. Being poor was terrible. Her heart was broken every time her son asked.” Can I have some more bread and jam please, Mommy?
One day, when her son asked the same question again, she decided to prepare a big meal for him with the only 6 dollars in her hand. She went to the supermarket, bought some food and cooked at home. Lisa was a shy mother, but she was strong-minded. “it’s time to make a change, “she thought. She used to love writing. In order to make some money, she began to write articles for magazines day and night.
Things went better. The local food bank started to provide her with some free vegetables every month. Her son finally had enough to eat. Once he told Lisa that the dishes she made were delicious. Suddenly, an idea came to Lisa’s mind, “Why not share my recipes on the Internet?” She did. Many people liked her recipes and she became popular.
Soon after that, some reporters interviewed her and asked her to write a book on cooking. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6-year-old son. The pain was more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol. I hadn’t heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to defend an alcoholic. One day I asked him, “I’m really puzzled by something,” I said. “I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do that you became such a good person?”
Ernie sat quietly for a while. Then he said, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘I love you, son.’”

“Could you play with me? You’d promised me!” Amber cried. But Cooper was always wearing his video game headset and shouting to someone in the screen. “I’m coming for you, dude!”
Mum and Dad heard Amber’s crying. They looked at Cooper and the screen angrily, but they walked away without a word.
The next day, when Cooper came back home, Mum was wearing his video game headset and staring at the TV screen.
“Mom? What are you doing?” he asked.
“What’s up?...NO! Look out! The creeper is right behind you.” Cooper’s mum spoke to him without moving her eyes away from the screen. “He’s such a noob.”
Cooper felt the goosebumps all over his arms. “A noob? Mom, when do you know what a noob is, or a creeper? And who are you talking to?”
“Daaaad!” he called and rushed into the kitchen, but stopped dead. The screen of his dad’s phone showed Candy Crunch—a new mobile game.
“What are you doing, Dad?”
“I don’t know how to tell you, dude. But your old man is pretty OP at this game.”
Dude? OP? Cooper stood back against the wall, afraid that he might fall to the ground.

“Amber, shouldn’t you be at piano class?” Cooper asked as he entered Amber’s bedroom.
“Mommy said not today,” she said, rubbing her head with tears.

“Guess who, Mommy?” she said.
“No idea. Who is this mystery (神秘的) person?” I joked.
The pair of us talked and laughed together for the rest of the afternoon.
“Remember this,” I told myself. “You are happy, right here, right now.”
Fast forward a few months, and my thoughts sounded different.
“Just keep going,” I would think, or, “How many sleeps until the weekend?”
I didn’t like what I was like—someone sleepwalking (梦游) through the week, running on coffee and too tired at night to do anything but watch TV. I thought the Christmas break would recognize (使再次充满活力) me, making me ready to take on another year of early starts. But I had to listen to my heart.
My patient husband and friends had listened to me going over the decision for six months, but the time for talking was over. It was time to make my choice: My daughter needed me and I needed her.
When she was really young, I loved the freedom of going to work as the sun was rising, happy that my family was still sound asleep. Then later, my daughter would set her alarm (闹钟) so she could wake up early with me to chat in the dark together.
The morning I planned to tell everyone I was quitting (放弃) my job, we sat together on the couch. I told her how nervous I was about sharing my news in a few hours’ time. Stroking (抚摸) her hair, I asked my daughter what she thought about my decision. “We’ll be so much happier, Mommy,” she said.
Life is never simply a choice between job and family. Ask anyone, and family always comes first.
Besides, I’m not disappearing—there are plenty of projects to keep me fulfilled.

I’d made the mistake of not learning any of those languages before my vacation. Everyone started getting off the train and an old woman saw that I was confused and stressed. (I had to catch an overnight train to Rome, and I was flying home from there). She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the tracks(轨道). She asked me where I was trying to get to, then went and talked to some workers, and came back to tell me that we’d have to hop(换乘)trains three or four times to get there.
I was really glad she was heading the same way because it would have been impossible for me to figure it out on my own(自己弄清楚). So we went from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way. She was really the sweetest woman. It was a 2.5-hour journey in total, and when we made it to the final destination(目的地), we got off and said our goodbyes. I had made it just in time to catch my train to Rome. One of the pots had a crack (裂缝) in it while the other pot was perfect and always carried a full pot of water. At the end of the long walk from the well to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half-full.
For two years this happened daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. One day, I asked the old woman: “ Why don’t you get another pot? The cracked one always makes water drop all the way back to your house.”
The old woman smiled: “ Did you notice that there are flowers on one side of the road, but not on the other side? That’s because I have always known about the crack, so I planted flower seeds (种子) on the side of the road. And every day while I walk back, I can water them.”
“For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to make my house more beautiful. Without the cracked pot, I would not have this beauty.”

Fire Safety
Put a smoke alarm in your house and test it every month. Half of all house fire deaths happen between 11 pm and 7 am. The risk of dying in a house fire is cut in half with working smoke alarms.
Make sure your hearing aid, wheelchair or eyeglasses are next to your bed. Fire can spread through a house soon. You may have as little as two minutes to escape (逃离) safely. Be ready to act at once.
Create a fire escape plan. 77% of families don't have a house fire escape plan to follow. That's one of the reasons why at least one child dies and 293 children are injured in a house fire every day.
Don't call 119 until you are safely outside. During a fire, the first thing to do is to get out of house as fast as you can.
