Can Money Buy Happiness?
Can money buy happiness? Different people have different opinions toward money. Some people think money is the source of happiness. In their opinion, everything in the world can be bought with money. However, others think that money is the root of all evils. For example, some people fight against each other for money, some kill others for money. All these evils are under the control of money. In my opinion, money can bring us pain as well as happiness. Only when your money is made through your honest efforts, can you live a good life. If we use money to help the poor and homeless, we will enjoy the true happiness.
Jaspreet Sethi, New Delhi, India
Can money buy happiness? It certainly doesn’t make one sad. If it comes my way, I’ll be happy.
If I had money, I’d buy a bigger car, a bigger house, a better education for my child, and a better holiday for my family.
Adam Hassan, Abuja, Nigeria
I think money can buy happiness. If you have to pay school fees, you need money. If you need a home for yourself, you need money. If you want to buy yourself something to eat, you need money. So if you don’t have money to get these things, there won’t be happiness.
If I had money, I’d get myself a home, a very good car, and a wife.
Arseny Yatsechko, Moscow, Russia
Money can buy anything. If you have enough money, you can make yourself happy. Family can change, people can change, but money won’t change.
If I had money, I’d probably spend it on a trip. I’d go to Paris or Berlin. I’m not so worried about the economy.
Richard Wicks, London, United Kingdom
I’ve seen people with untold wealth. They never seemed happy to me. But what is happiness? You know, at the end of the day, as long as you’ve got your health and can get up, brush your teeth, get dressed in the morning, and talk to one another, you’re the richest person in the world.
Miguel Josue Molano, Bogotá, Colombia
You can have lots of money, but if you don’t have happiness in your heart, you won’t be able to share it.
If I suddenly found myself with lots of money, I would try to help people, because that’s the way to become happy. I’d help people try to achieve a different type of happiness.

One evening my brother, John, a 2-year-old boy, felt very nervous when my father walked in. He knew he did something wrong. He opened father’s new book and draw all over the first page with a pen.
But to our surprise, my father wasn’t angry with John. He picked up his much-loved book and looked at it for a while. Without saying a word, he sat down and wrote something carefully beside John’s drawings. It said that John’s work, 1959, age 2. Then he walked to John and said with a smile, “Good guy. What a great thing you did! Now my book is priceless. Thanks for your drawings in my book.”
The years and the books came and went. From time to time, we opened the book, looked at the drawings, and read father’s words again and again.
Now I know what my father taught us deeply. Firstly, how trouble the event is in life. Gradually, it’ll become better in the end. When we look at it from another side, we’ll realize how unforgettable it is. My father also taught us about what really matters in life. Full Rizer Red (《满江红》), one of the hit movies in 2023, reminded me of Yue Fei, our national hero. He led the army to fight bravely against Jin, not to yield (屈服) to the traitor (叛徒) Qin Hui. Yue Fei, according to China’s history, is a real hero. His story has been passed down through the ages, beginning with his life in the Southern Song Dynasty.
There are heroes in every time period. Heroes are people who do something brave, unusual, or important. Heroes are men and women who take risks. In the face of natural disasters, there are also many retrograde (逆行的) heroes. They make a positive (积极的) difference in the world.
Some heroes lived long ago. George Washington was the first president of the United States. Some heroes did great things recently. Sally Ride was an astronaut and an educator, and the first American woman to go into space.
Some of the greatest heroes did not just do remarkable things that made them famous. In their everyday lives, they behaved in ways that made people admire their character. Character is a group of qualities that make up who a person is. Heroes are often people with great character.
Many people with great character are honest. Honest people tell the truth, even when it is hard to do it. Someone with great character may also be compassionate. A compassionate person cares about others and works to help them.

The three experts say the education system is to blame (责备) for this terrible change. They say today’s boys have to sit still in classrooms all day. Most of their teachers are women. That means boy students don’t have good role models in school. Apart from school education, popular culture has to shoulder the blame, too. Many male role models today, the experts say, are effeminate.
Now, if you are a boy reading this, you shouldn’t get too nervous. The book just talks about social changes in general. These changes have been happening all over the world, not just in China. The world has become richer. As a result, the traditional roles of men and women have changed. We no longer live in primitive (远古的) times. There is no need for men to protect their families from man-eating tigers. And women don’t depend on men on money any longer. Most of them have their own jobs and careers.
Becoming a man is a difficult process. It takes a long time. Perhaps your best role model is your father. From our fathers, we learn that a man should be honest and kind. He is responsible and hardworking. He faces difficulties bravely and doesn’t complain or make excuses. Your father may not have big muscles (肌肉). However, he does have a big heart.

She had a few things for washing and seemed to want the Starbucks cashier to ring up since that queue was shorter than the queues in the store.
At some point I became aware of her edging (慢慢挪动) closer behind me — closer than I was comfortable with! I instinctively (本能地) placed a hand over my purse and drew it close to me. My fear and imagination raced creating wild stories about this homeless woman who might try to steal from me.

He asked me to repeat what I said but he still couldn’t make me out. At that point, a long, grey arm, with holes in its sleeves, reached over from behind me. She laid 67 cents out on the counter, saying, “Here, we all need some help sometimes.”

Nowadays, many students do homework with the help of the special apps like Tom. "It's convenient. You don't have to go out or wait for a tutor(家庭教师)at home," Tom said. "You also learn by seeing how others work them out. It’s very helpful and improves students' abilities." said John, another student. He said it was especially true for new types of homework.
John's Chinese teacher often asks students to give speeches on great writers. When it comes to John's turn, he usually searches online, picks out certain stories and makes PPTS(演示文稿). "I've become skilled at finding information online and using Microsoft Office." John said.
However, many people think this trend(趋势)also brings up problems. Some students just copy the answers online without thinking. They become lazy.
Head teacher Mr. Wang in Tom and John's school thinks that knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control. "No matter how difficult the problem is, think about it by yourself first. Remember not to depend on the Internet too much." the teacher said. “Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies,” says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problem of adolescent (青春期的)sleep at Brown’s School of Medicine.
Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time in adolescents. And, at a more basic level, she and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of adolescence affect sleep needs and patterns(方式).
Carskadon says her work suggests that adolescents may need more sleep than they did at childhood, no less, as commonly thought.
Sleep patterns change during adolescence, as any parent of an adolescent can prove. Most adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But it’s not just a matter of choice---their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns.
All of this makes the transfer(迁移)from middle school to high school---which may start one hour earlier in the morning----all the more difficult, Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the “sleep late, rise late” pattern, adolescents are up against difficulties when they try to be up by 5 or 6 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. first bell. A short sleep on a desktop may be their body’s way of saying. “I need a timeout.”
