Do you know how family names come about? A British writer called David tells us something about the family names in his new book.
First, some family names come from the places of their homes. If a man lives on or near a hill, his family name may be Hill. In England people's names may be Wood or Lake because they live near the wood or the lake.
Second, some family names come from people's jobs. For example, Butcher means someone who sells meat. Farmer is a man who has a farm.
Third, many people get their family names from nicknames(昵称). For example, my family name is Black. Because of the different colors, some are called Black and some are called White, Green, Brown. It is said that long ago, few people lived long. There were few people with white hair. When people saw someone with white hair, they would call him or her "White head".
So, when you see a British man with a strange family name, don't be surprised. There may be an interesting history.

Colours influence our moods. There is a relationship between colours and moods. A yellow room makes people feel cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings us warmth and joy on the saddest winter day. Black is depressing (令人压抑的). There was a black bridge over River Thames. The number of people who killed themselves on that bridge used to be larger than that on any other bridge in the area---until it was repainted green.
Light and bright colours make people not only happier but also more active. In the factory, the workers will work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black.

So, for the next day, I had to live without a phone: no calls, no texts, no social media. And what I discovered was that I really didn’t miss making phone calls or getting text messages or reading social media posts. It was actually relaxing. For that whole day, I was able to stop living in a “virtual” world and start living in the “real” world.
Smartphones have changed the way we live. They are sources of communication, information and entertainment. All of these things are good, but too much of these things can also be bad. There is a chemical in your brain called dopamine (多巴胺). Activities like watching videos cause your brain to get this chemical. It gives you pleasure. For many people, these feelings of “pleasure” will increase the more they use their smartphones. This explains why you may feel upset when you can’t use yours. You have, in fact, become addicted (上瘾) to dopamine, the “happy hormone”. To treat this increasingly common addiction, some places are experimenting with the idea of “no digital hours”. In the Indian village of Vadgaon, for example, people are being forced to turn off their phones and TVs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every night.
Smartphones are great, but you should be smart about using them. Put them away in your pocket for a while and enjoy the real world... but you should still be careful about getting into taxis.

● Don’t use earphones (耳机) when running in the schoolyard (校园) or on the street. You will keep yourself from the outside world and can be surprised.
● Your bag should be carried in front of your body instead of putting it on your back. When a bus is full of people, it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the bag on your back.
● If you are followed by someone you don’t know, cross the street and go to the other way, let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. Next, don’t go home right away. You are safer in the street than you are alone in your home.

My husband just lost his job and my son is ill. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays.” Then she gave the cashier food stamps.
