What do you do if you're in trouble on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.
Body signals (信号)
Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training, When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means, "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.
Smoke signals
The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a tire unless you're sure that it can’t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.
Ground-to-air signals
It's a good idea lo build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:
F "I need food and water"
II "I need medicine."
I "I am badly hurt."
X "I am unable lo move from here."
Pilots' replies
If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means: "message received and understood" (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received hut not understood" (At night, the: pilot flashes the plants red lights.)
However, there is no signal which means "message not received. Why not'?

A blind man and his “eyes” in a fire

One day, John Clark and Charlie arrived at a hotel.

“Good evening, sir,” said the receptionist. “You’re welcome to stay, but I’m sorry that we don’t allow pets here.”

“Charlie isn’t a pet,” said John. “He’s my eyes. I’m blind and I can’t go anywhere by myself.”

The receptionist said sorry to John and led him and his “eyes” Charlie to their room.

John was very tired. He soon fell asleep. Some time later, Charlie started barking. John woke up and smelt smoke.

A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. With Charlie’s help, John put some wet towels along the bottom of the door. Then he got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited.

Soon he heard the sound of a fire engine. A fireman arrived and got him out of the building, but the fireman did not want to take Charlie. John would not go without his “eyes”. Finally, the fireman got Charlie out of the building, too and they were both safe.

【推荐2】First aid is a very useful skill to have. By learning it, you could save someone’s life in the unexpected situation. But in China, less than one percent of adults have first aid skills, according to the communication website.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has realized this. On August 24, it issued (发布) a statement along with the Red Cross Society of China. It has asked all public schools in China to provide first aid courses, including CPR (心肺复苏) training, as part of their health classes. Then, how does CPR help? CPR is an important first aid skill that can save victims (受害者) of the cardiac arrest (心搏停止). The first few minutes are very important. If CPR is correctly performed on the victim within the first four to six minutes, the victim will have a better chance to survive. So Chinese students should learn how to do CPR.

A survey from the Development Research Center of the State Council shows that 64.6 percent of schools already have these courses. However, the results are not good. According to MOE’s statement, future results are expected to be better.

Other countries have also made efforts to provide first aid training for their people. In 1966, the US government said police officers, firefighters (消防员), middle school teachers and college teachers must receive CPR training. A 2017 survey showed that 65 percent of Americans had received CPR training. In Switzerland, all people are asked to learn first aid skills. Escaping from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury(受伤).
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leak (渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto hard ground might end in injury. Bushes (灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall(使势头减弱).
