Body signals (信号)
Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training, When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means, "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.
Smoke signals
The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a tire unless you're sure that it can’t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.
Ground-to-air signals
It's a good idea lo build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:
F "I need food and water"
II "I need medicine."
I "I am badly hurt."
X "I am unable lo move from here."
Pilots' replies
If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means: "message received and understood" (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received hut not understood" (At night, the: pilot flashes the plants red lights.)
However, there is no signal which means "message not received. Why not'?

A blind man and his “eyes” in a fire
One day, John Clark and Charlie arrived at a hotel.
“Good evening, sir,” said the receptionist. “You’re welcome to stay, but I’m sorry that we don’t allow pets here.”
“Charlie isn’t a pet,” said John. “He’s my eyes. I’m blind and I can’t go anywhere by myself.”
The receptionist said sorry to John and led him and his “eyes” Charlie to their room.
John was very tired. He soon fell asleep. Some time later, Charlie started barking. John woke up and smelt smoke.
A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. With Charlie’s help, John put some wet towels along the bottom of the door. Then he got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited.
Soon he heard the sound of a fire engine. A fireman arrived and got him out of the building, but the fireman did not want to take Charlie. John would not go without his “eyes”. Finally, the fireman got Charlie out of the building, too and they were both safe.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has realized this. On August 24, it issued (发布) a statement along with the Red Cross Society of China. It has asked all public schools in China to provide first aid courses, including CPR (心肺复苏) training, as part of their health classes. Then, how does CPR help? CPR is an important first aid skill that can save victims (受害者) of the cardiac arrest (心搏停止). The first few minutes are very important. If CPR is correctly performed on the victim within the first four to six minutes, the victim will have a better chance to survive. So Chinese students should learn how to do CPR.
A survey from the Development Research Center of the State Council shows that 64.6 percent of schools already have these courses. However, the results are not good. According to MOE’s statement, future results are expected to be better.
Other countries have also made efforts to provide first aid training for their people. In 1966, the US government said police officers, firefighters (消防员), middle school teachers and college teachers must receive CPR training. A 2017 survey showed that 65 percent of Americans had received CPR training. In Switzerland, all people are asked to learn first aid skills. In Germany, 80 percent of people have received first aid training.

Escaping from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury(受伤).
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leak (渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto hard ground might end in injury. Bushes (灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall(使势头减弱).

Anyone who walked into a restaurant during the pandemic knows that the QR code is a contact-less(无接触) way to look at a menu. But the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning customers that they need to be extra careful if they’re sent a digitally readable square known as a QR code.
One victim told the BBB that they received a cheating letter about student loan. It contained a QR code that appeared to link to the official Studentaid. gov website. The QR code also helped the letter, which was part of a cheating, appear official.
As the QR codes have become more commonly used, the BBB notes that it has received reports of scammers using the system to their advantage across the United States. “This is much like a phishing scam,” Laura, director of marketing for Eastern Michigan, said. “Just like clicking links, you have to be careful what website you’re opening on your smartphone. If you’ve never heard of the organization or the website where the QR code is supposed to go to, that’s a huge red flag.” She said the use of the QR code by scammers offers another way to steal personal information or get you to download malware(恶意软件) onto your smartphone.
The scammers can now send messages to one or all people in a user’s address book, or even send a payment to where it cannot be recovered, according to the U. S. Army Major Cybercrime Unit. “In some scams, the QR code takes you to a phishing website, where you are required to enter your personal information for scammers to steal,” the BBB warned. “Other times, scammers use QR codes to payment apps or follow a bad social media account.”
Scams can differ, but the scammers want you to scan the code right away. What you need to do, though, is to step back and make sure any information is legitimate(合法的) before you scan the code. Phone the friend or coworker directly to see what they might have sent, and make sure the sender wasn’t hacked.
Adam Levin, an expert, says it’s a good rule of thumb to turn your smartphone off and restart it regularly. “Many forms of malware that live in your smartphone, such as spyware, depend on the device never being turned off.” Levin said.

Now, China’s young people are seeking to wear that joyfulness on their bodies, giving rise to the fashion craze — “dopamine dressing style”. Mainly characterized by bright colours, this dressing style is described by many Chinese netizens as “healing” and “a mood booster (调压器)”. It is part-fashion, part-mindfulness.
Dopamine dressing is nothing new. In fact, a study published in 2012 found that when participants (参与者) were asked to wear clothing that held some symbolic meaning, their perceived (感知的) confidence increased. The study determined that clothing can have a direct influence on their psychological (心理的) process.
“When we are confident, we are able to exert influence through our confidence alone.” behavioral psychologist Carolyn Mair explained. “When we feel good, we are likely to be perceived as looking good too, as our posture, voice and other nonverbal aspects will be more positive.”
Another 2015 study found that the outfits we wear can directly influence how we think. It suggested that dressing in a certain way can influence the way we make decisions. “What we wear is how we show ourselves to those we interact with — we are influenced by their reaction to it. If we are well received, it boosts our confidence and can ultimately affect our general health and happiness,” Mair added.
In fact, dopamine dressing is different for everyone. It’s about wearing the clothes that make you feel good. It could be joggers and a sport shirt; it could be your favourite pair of jeans; or it could be that dress you were saving for a special occasion. For some, bright colours are what boost their mood.
Colour psychologist Karen Haller said, “Colour is a great way to lift our spirits and boost. our moods in an instant. Our confidence can be boosted when we wear colours that we love and feel good in. We instinctively feel and behave differently around colours because of how we take the colours in through our eyes and through the part of our brain where our emotions reside.”
Ultimately, dopamine dressing is whatever makes you feel good. The most important thing is to have fun with it.

For many animals, an island can be a great place to live. Water all around keeps big predators away. But islands have their own dangers. Food and water are limited. A storm or volcano can easily wipe out a whole population or change the land in big ways. If a predator (like cats or rats) does arrive, there’s no escape. These challenges can cause island animals to evolve (进化) quite differently from their mainland ancestors (祖先). So, islands around the world are home to rare species found nowhere else.
The Galápagos are a group of small volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, 600 miles (966km) west of Ecuador. When these islands first erupted (喷发) from the sea, they were empty of life. Over time, plant seeds blew or drifted there. Birds arrived, bringing more seeds. Tortoises and iguanas (鬣蜥) floated over on logs.
When scientist Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos in 1835, he noticed something interesting. Many of the islands had similar animals—iguanas, land tortoises, small birds. But these animals were a bit different on each island. On one island, birds called finches had long, narrow beaks —right for catching bugs. But on the next island, the finches had short, strong beaks. That island had more seeds, and fewer bugs. Each type of finch had a beak that matched the most common food on its island. He found similar differences in the tortoises and iguanas.
After thinking about this for many years, Darwin’s observations led him to a startling new idea. He realized that each family of animals probably shared a common ancestor—the original birds or turtles who flew or drifted there. Gradually, as they spread to different islands, the young with traits that best suited the food on that island did better. But since each island was different, the birds or turtles on each island evolved slightly different traits. He called this idea “natural selection”.
Darwin’s idea explained more than just the Galápagos. It also explains why islands are so often home to unusual animals. Islands separate animals from others of their kind and present them with new challenges. Those animals that do best on an island many not be the same ones who did best on the mainland. So over time, they become different.

Have you ever wanted to have a doll that could talk to you? In the book The Ventriloquist's Daughter, a girl named Liur gets a doll like this. But it doesn't turn out to be as fun as she thought.
Lin Man-Chiu, an author from Taiwan, wrote the book. British translator Helen Wang translated it into English. The book tells a touching story about Liur and her father.
Liur loses her mother at a young age. Her grandfather sends her father to a medical school in the US. Five years later, he comes back with a doll named Carola, as he once promised he would. This doll is quite unusual-it can talk! However, Carola makes a lot of problems for the family.
After reading this book. I thought Liur and her father were just unlucky. In fact, this story is based on the author's own unhappy childhood. She had six sisters. Still, her grandfather wanted a grandson. Her father was under heavy pressure and didn't live with her and her sisters for a very long time. The author didn't like her father when she was young. But now she has forgiven him. The talking doll Carola stands for her father's burden (负担).
After I learned this,I understood the author's main message. Everyone has demons (心魔) in their lives, but we should do our best to beat them.
