I am Mike Smith, a doctor from London. I really feel that life in China is changing so quickly. Recently I had a business trip to Tianjin. I left my Beijing apartment and walked half a street to the subway station. About twelve stops later, I reached the high-speed rail station. After two minutes of security (安检), I picked up my ticket, which I had bought on my phone while on the subway. Then I walked to the terminal (终点站) and got on the train. Twenty-eight minutes later, I was in the center of a beautiful city—Tianjin. I could enjoy a nice walk along the riverside towards my hotel. It is amazing that the whole experience took no more than a few hours, with no cars, no airports, no credit cards (信用卡) and no long lines, just my smart phone, only a few US dollars and comfortable walking shoes. In most places in the developed world, there is no experience like this. But China is different.
So in my opinion, if we think highly of China’s modern wonders, I believe its high-speed rail system must be one of them. And it's one symbol of a new China and a sign of China’s strength (实力) as well.

When I was a child, I lived in the countryside with my grandparents. I still remember at that time, my grandmother took me to the kindergarten every day. When she took me back, she would buy me cookies to make me happy. My grandfather had something wrong with his leg, so he didn’t go there with us. He would stay at home, cook for me and play with me. I liked them because of the smiles and the kindness on their faces. I will never forget those days. When I was a student, my grandpa helped me with my studies. At that time, I was not good at Maths. He often wrote down the questions on a notebook and asked me to solve out five of them every day. When I met some difficulties (困难) in daily life, he would wait and sit by me patiently and encourage me. Then, at last we would solve them together.

However, two centuries ago, when bicycles were first invented, they were used only for transportation. In the eighteenth century, people usually traveled by horse and wagon(马车). In 1817, an early “bicycle” was made in Germany. Its frame(车架) was made of wood. It didn’t have any pedals(踏板). People had to push with their feet. In the 1830s, the first bicycle was invented. Pedals were made for the bicycle. In the 1860, Frenchman Pierre Miehaux and his son gave the bicycle a new look. In 1867, they brought the bicycle to the world Expo(世博会). Since then, the bicycle was more and more popular in Europe. In the 1870s, the front wheel was much larger than the back one. This made it very hard to ride. It was also very expensive. In the 1890s, bicycles with same—sized wheels came out in North America and Western Europe. They were much safer, cheaper and more comfortable.
In China there are shared bikes on the roads. They have saved us a lot of time during emergency situations, and on beautiful, clear days. However, bicycling is not easy in our city. There are no bicycle lanes(车道), and bikers have to travel next to cars in car lanes.

In New York you can travel about the city by subway, bus, taxi and car. The subway runs under the city. It crosses the city at different points and goes to all parts of the city. Traveling by subway is the fastest way to get around the city.
The second way to travel around the city is going by public bus. It’s a slower way to travel. This is because the bus often moves on busy roads.
You can also travel around the city by taxi. This is the most expensive way, but the taxi will take you to the very place you want to go to. If traffic (交通) is heavy, the taxi will be slow (缓慢的). During the mornings and afternoons, there is the “rush hour”. This is the time when the traffic is very heavy with people going to and from work.
The last way to get around New York is using your own car. However, it’s not easy for you to drive, especially when you are driving in the “rush hour”. If there is an accident (事故) on the road, you will have to wait for a long time.

Black-footed ferrets are one of the most endangered animals in North America, with fewer than 500 in the wild. But in the early 1900s, they were widespread throughout the American West. Later, the ferrets disappeared with their primary food source, prairie dogs(土拨鼠) dying out.
Fortunately, thanks to the cloning technology, Elizabeth Ann came to the earth. She was cloned from Willa, a ferret who died in 1988. Willa’s genes(基因) were saved for years since the cloning technology was not perfect enough at that time. “The theory of genes showed the genetic value that Willa could bring to her babies.” Ryan Phelan, who was working in the project, told CNN. “But it was a promise to see this type of ferret pass on that has led to the successful birth of Elizabeth Ann. If Elizabeth Ann can reproduce later on, the number of the ferrets may grow, which helps them stand stronger against natural risks, CBS news reported. However, the effects of cloning remain unclear, according to CNN.
Elizabeth Ann will not be put into the wild and will stay in the lab where she was born so researchers can study her, according to BBC. The team is now working on producing more “Elizabeth Anns” in the coming months. Besides that, researchers also point out the importance of protection for ferrets’ living places.

After the first day, little Tommy came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn’t kiss his mother hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying.
