Stonchenge is a famous place in England, one of the oldest and most mysterious(神秘的)places in the world. It was probably put up between 1800 B. C. and 1400 B. C. It lies in the city of Salisbury, which is about 13 km south of Stonchenge.
Stonehenge was a ring of standing stones, including upright(垂直的)stones with a horizontal(水平的)stone lying across the top. When it was completed, it was made up of a double circle of stones with two more groups of stones outside the circles. Over time, however, many of the stones have been broken by wind and rain, only a small number is still standing today.
It is unclear who built Stonchenge or even how it was built. Many of the stones must have been transported over 250 miles to Stonchenge. Single stones, some of them weighing about four tons, must have been sent on rivers and rolled over land on tree trunks(树干). They can’t have been carried! The men who moved the stones didn’t have wheels or horses. Each stone had to be moved by hand.
The purpose of Stonchenge is just as mysteries. It has been called a place to honor ancestors, a sun temple, an ancient clock and a calendar. Some people think the stones have been built in a special way to mark sunrise and sunset at certain times during the year, because the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Others have even thought that it was an ancient generator, which is a machine to produce electricity, because it was built along energy lines in the earth and was used to make use of the earth’s natural energies.

Hawaii has been a magical name to people who like to travel for many years. People on both sides of the Pacific Ocean(太平洋), in Japan and in America, dream of seeing these beautiful islands in the middle of the ocean. In the tropical lands, the sun drops like a ball of golden fire into the sea, and it drops so quickly that you can almost see it move. The sun leaves behind a glow that lights the sky in the quiet water.
People often have a quiet, enjoyable time walking along the water. This scenery here is not very different from the exciting beauty that greeted the first tourists to these islands centuries ago. They came in canoes not much bigger than small boats.
They found the beautiful white sand beaches and the waving palm trees, but there were no grand hotels like the one we see today. The first people came to Hawaii nearly two thousand years ago, but skyscraper hotels were only built in the last 25 years. Now planes make it possible to fly to Hawaii for a weekend from Tokyo or San Francesco.
No matter where people come from, they really want to see the earliest beauty of Hawaii. They want to see the lovely beaches and the mountains which are almost hidden by the tall hotels.

【推荐3】When I was younger, I wished for a Porsche and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes possible and took the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford that car and the dream house. All the way through junior year, my mind was planning this beautiful future.
Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at the age of 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, and on the same day, my beloved fourth-grade teacher. They left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely.
After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me; life is not promised and neither is my future success. While I was going through the actions in an attempt to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I was just existing. I realized that life has more purposes than getting materials, which will only be yours until you can no longer keep up with the payments. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with you forever and that is real success.
Enjoying life's great changes makes a person more successful than a wealthy person who is not satisfied and takes everything for granted(把……当成理所当然). The summer before senior year, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning information. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the successes that come with it.
I still make excellent grades, but now I spared weeks to studying instead of preparing for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. Success, just like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder(旁观者). For me, being successful means truly living life each day, being thankful, and affecting the world.
