You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give without spending time filling your own needs, then it’s likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways to fill the empty space in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” values and “having” values.
Your “being” values are the personalities (性格) of the ideal (理想的) person you would like to be. People can choose some “being” values that they are willing to make a promise to live by. An example of some “being” values are: kind, loving, generous, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire (激励) others by being a positive role model. Mastering being these personalities becomes your life purpose.
Your “having” values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement or support. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life.
When you make a promise to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious (慎重的) choices. If you usually talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, or set a time limit before you react. If you usually worry about something, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. A responsible or wise person might have the courage to deal with difficulties they meet. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you make your chosen beliefs stronger. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.

There are certain things you never imagine yourself saying.
“I just got a worm in my eye!” is one of them.
And yet I did say it—I screamed it, actually.
The family was all here and we were in the garden, when I saw a worm nearby. I asked my six-year-old grandson to come over and remove the worm. He picked up the worm, studied it quickly and then threw it into the air.
The worm quickly fell back to earth, landing on my face against my left eyelid. That’s when the screaming started and the jumping up and down.
You know how they say when you meet a small creature, that the small creature is just as afraid of you as you are of it? They lie.
The worm showed no fear. I, however, am still having nightmares about the experience, which was several days ago.
The most important thing in all this is that my grandson said he was sorry to me.
I’d just been reading a book that makes a connection between adults doing the slow and hard work of teaching manners to children and greater levels of civility in society.
Table manners, language manners and even manners in dress all show levels of self-control.
Having self-control limits what we say and how we behave, making many of us appear a good deal better than we really are.
Good manners also have the possibility to make mealtime a pleasant experience, even with small children.
All of my grandchildren, except the ones that can’t yet talk, ask to be excused before leaving the table.
It is a sign of respect for others at the table and a sign of respect for the meal itself. It’s also more pleasant than pushing one’s chair back and running for the back yard.
Those tall enough, and even those not tall enough, also take their dishes to the kitchen.
Manners are what civilize us—around our tables, in our families, homes and our communities.
So when a little boy has the courage to apologize to a grandma who is screaming and jumping up and down, at least we know that our years of teaching young people manners are paying off—one worm at a time.

After several months, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t clean her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including the windows.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! The woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?”
Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

B.Because new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. |
C.Because people like following old ideas and do not like change. |
D.Because people have to respect new architectural styles. |

C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in. |

First, more and more people have their own computers and their computers can be joined with the Internet. So it is possible for many of them to do shopping through the Internet. Second, shopping through the Internet can save them some money and a lot of time. Third, they don't need to go to the shop themselves. Because of these good facts, few people refuse it.

Sometimes a worker stands in the lift. He or she operates it up and down. In modern lifts there is no worker. The people walk in. They know what floor they want. They push a button and the lift goes to that floor. It is all very fast and easy.
Lifts are very important to us. Why? Think about a tall building. Maybe it has twenty floors. Maybe it has fifty or more. Who can walk up all the stairs? Maybe people can climb them one time. S. teenagers who visited hospitals because of suicidal thoughts or ideas doubled. In 2007, the number of visits was 580,000; by 2015, that number had increased to 1.12 million, reports CNN.
The fact that so many young people fight with depression (沮丧) and suicidal thoughts every day is shocking. But new research may allow us to look into the differences between the development of depression in boys and girls.
Researchers found that there are big differences between the development of depression for boys and girls. Girls seemed to develop depression at a faster speed and hit the highest levels of depression at an earlier age. For boys, the most rapid increase of depression happened at age 16. 4, while girls' biggest increase came at 13. 5 years.
There's no exact answer for these differences. But expert Arash Emamzadeh says that a general increase in depression during teenage time is possibly "because teenagers face many changes during this period such as puberty(青春期) , school transition(过渡) and forming friendships. "
As for girls experiencing depression at an earlier age, Emamzadeh writes, "One possible explanation for this difference is the earlier puberty in girls compared with boys. "
Finding a solution is not easy. However, if schools, parents and teenagers make efforts at the same time, things will certainly be better. Students in schools need to be helped to deal with problems both in their daily lives and study. Less stress is supposed to be put on teenagers' shoulders by parents. Proper communication between teenagers and parents is necessary. Teenagers should keep optimistic and look on the bright side of life.

This is like your teacher telling you that you've done well and allowing you to skip(跳) a grade, but you'll have to leave your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?" She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was lost in thought. The question kept me wondering for the rest of the night. I had said "Yes" but for the first time, I realized the difficult decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I'd eagerly wait for the phone to ring and then tell her everything that happened during the day. A phone call, however, could never take her place and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large empty apartment, It was then I started to understand the difficult choices she had to make. She needed to think about both family and work. Faced with difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn't know whether you made the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with a positive attitude.
Back home, I reminded myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she managed to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be independent. I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable goals.

Locusts(蝗虫)are super delicious food for birds, but it is not always an easy job for birds to catch them. It is neither because locusts are good jumpers or runners nor because they are smarter than their enemies. The reason is that the colors of locusts change with the colors of plants. When plants are young, locusts look green But when autumn comes, locus change to the yellow and brown color as plants do.
Brown bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They can’t be seen easily by their enemies. This is because they have colors similar to the trees. For the same reason, polar bears that live on a land of snow and ice are white. Butterflies and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soil(泥土)insects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the soil(土壤)in a dark and wet environment. However, insects with colors different from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. So in order tosurvive, they have to hide themselves in the daytime and appear only at night.
Have you ever noticed some even strange acts? The ink(墨水)fish in the sea can send out some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over, its enemies will find themselves in a dark world. At the same time the ink fish quickly swims away. That is how it keeps itself safe though it is not strong at all.
