His students thought for a while, and one of them said: “Because when we lose our calm, we shout.”
“But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can just as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner,” said the wise man.
Students gave some other answers but none were any good.
“When two people are angry at each other, their hearts become distanced(疏远的),” the wise man explained. “To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the louder they will have to shout to hear each other and cover that great distance.”
The wise man then gave an example: “What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly because their hearts are very close. When they love each other even more, what happens? They don’t need to talk. They only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.”
He looked at his students and said: “So when you argue, do not let your hearts get distant. Do not say words that distance you from others. Otherwise, there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.”

Next to the lion’s cage was a hyena. He hated the lion. One day, the hyena said to the lion, “If you are the friend of this prince, why does he keep you in a cage?”
When the lion was about to answer, the hyena cut him off and said, “Because of your big teeth.” The prince laughed at this and said, “No. I believe the lion will not hurt me. The reason is because I’m afraid that if I were to let him out, he would leave me.”
The hyena said, “Oh, but you’re wrong, young prince! We love our cages. We’d never leave. Open my cage and I’ll show you.” The young prince opened the cage and the hyena quickly jumped on the prince to eat him. Suddenly, the lion jumped out of his cage and grabbed the hyena. Then the hyena ran off, and never to be seen again.

When the weather is very cold, plants cannot grow. So people there have to build their houses with fur, earth, stone or snow. When they go out to catch or kill animals, they live in tents. Dou Zheng, 15, a ninth-grader at The High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University designed(设计) such an app. People can sell recyclable waste (可回收垃圾) like bottles to rubbish collectors. Just like ordering takeout, people can simply make an order on the app and enjoy door-to-door service. This March, Dou won the first prize at the 36th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition with the app.
The idea for her app came from a real-life experience. On her way home, she always saw roads that were blocked ( 堵 住 ) because of rubbish collectors. “ There are lots of water bottles and cardboard on the roads. It’s a total mess ,” she said.
After doing research on surrounding communities ( 社 区 ), she found that the answer to the problem was to change the way people and rubbish collectors trade.
Last summer holiday, she ordered a lot of takeout, which gave her the idea to design the app. To believe that it would work, she did surveys on WeChat and in the streets. The results showed that eight out of 10 people supported the idea.
However, she didn’t know how to program apps. She read many books and watched videos to learn about programming on her own. “It’s hard. I have to know what a series of complicated codes (代码) mean and then write my own,” she said. Later, with the help of an app called AppMakr, she finished it! “This app made designing my app easier,” she said.
Her app may go online next year. “I’m working on contacting companies to promote (推广) it,” she said.

Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher may have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
“Oh, ” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt(认错), I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even get any pocket money. “My father will get angry. ” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth. “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had done.
My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.
“I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt﹣ridden face. “Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It’s time we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding(奖励)you for your misdeed. I am rewarding you for your truthfulness. ”
I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide-the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.
All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day, and it will echo forever.
