Mike Reynolds builds houses from recycled materials. These houses are a symbol of his war against waste. Mike’s houses are built using the things that other people throw away. His Earthships (as his houses are called) are beautiful buildings. They are shaped and colored to reflect the fields around them. He uses bottles to create beautiful walls full of light. There are plants everywhere, inside and outside. But the plants and the bottles, like everything else in the Earthships, are not only there for decoration (装饰).
Every single material in an Earthship is carefully chosen. Old car tires are used to build strong outside walls. The rubber protects the houses from the cold winds in winter. These walls are built at the back of the house. The walls at the front of the house are built from metal cans or glass bottles. They’re held together with earth from the ground around them.
The beautiful bottle walls are built to the south to give light during the day. The larger front windows heat the house. They also create perfect conditions for growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables because the plants are protected against the bad weather. When you live in an Earthship, you don’t need anything from the outside world. You grow your own food. You get electricity from the sun and wind, and you get water from the rain and snow.
Mike and some other Earthship builders use their ability and experience to help people all over the world. In 2010, they visited Haiti in the earthquake. They taught people there how to build safe, new homes quickly and cheaply from materials that they could find around them. Mike points out that waste is always there because we humans create it—but we can also learn to recycle it.

The first important way is that they provide man with food, wood and other products. Trees provide not only man with food, but also many animals with food. Without trees many animals could not live on the earth. It’s not easy for man to live on the earth without trees, either.
The second important way is that trees give us shade (阴凉). On a hot summer day, people are eager (渴望) to have a rest under a tree after they have a long walk. You can imagine how important the shade of a tree is to man and animals.
The third important way is that trees help to prevent droughts and floods (防止干旱和洪水). However, in many parts of the world, man doesn’t realize the third way. They cut trees down in large numbers. In the end they find that they have lost the best friends they had.

In 2016, Felix Back, a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia, Canada, found out people threw away about 100,000 pairs of chopsticks every day in Vancouver alone. He felt he needed to do something. So he started the company Chop Value in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools and shopping centers in Canada and the US and turned them into furniture and other artworks. Now in its seventh year with the rapid growth of the company, Bock employs (雇佣) 40 people, and using his special methods of steam and press machines, he has recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks.
Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind Chop Value will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay a small sum of money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. The duck was sleeping. What an easy target! Without much thought, Tommy picked up a stone, placed it in the center of the slingshot and fired. The stone hit the duck on the head and killed it!
Tommy never thought he would really hit the duck. He also felt upset that he had killed Grandma’s pet. Feeling afraid that Grandma would punish him, he hid the dead duck in the woods.
Maggie had seen it all from the window, but she said nothing. After lunch the next day, Grandma said, “Maggie, let’s wash the dishes.” Maggie said, “But Grandma, Tommy told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.”
Then she said quietly to Tommy, “Remember the duck?” Tommy got nervous, knowing his sister knew about the duck. So without saying anything, he did the dishes.
Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing. Grandma said, “I’m sorry but I need Maggie to help me prepare for the dinner.” Maggie just smiled and said, “Well, that’s all right because Tommy told me he wanted to help.”
She turned again to Tommy, “Remember the duck?” So Maggie went fishing and Tommy stayed to help. That night, Tommy lay on the bed, thought about the whole thing and decided that he wouldn’t be taken advantage of any longer.
The next morning, he told Grandma that he had killed the duck. Grandma said, “I know, sweetheart. I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing. I was just wondering how long you would let Maggie take advantage of you.”
