I strongly believe that we can have an important effect(影响) on anyone we meet. The right words at just the right time could totally change someone’s life.
Years ago, that’s what happened to me. My life was completely changed because a simple three-word phrase was delivered(发出) at the right time in just the right way.
When I was 3 years old, my parents discovered I was deaf. After asking many doctors and parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me in a normal school. On my first day at school, the other kids made fun of me because of my hearing aid (助听器) and the way I talked. I was hurt deeply and I saw myself as an ugly kid. Mrs. Green, my teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase. One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips(嘴唇) and raised my hand right away. She called on me in front of the blackboard. I took a deep breath and nervously answered Mrs. Green’s question.
I will never forget what happened next. Mrs. Green pointed directly at me. With a big smile she cried: “That’s right, Ben!” For the first time in my young life, my confidence(自信) rose.
At that moment, I decided that no matter how many difficulties I may face, I can overcome (克服) them. Thanks to those three simple words, my whole life changed from that moment.

Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information from pictures, graphs(图表) and videos, you are probably a visual learner. You are not good at copying down what the teacher says in class. Never mind. You can draw graphs or pictures instead, if you find that works better for you.
Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to easily remember things by hearing them, then you are probably an auditory learner. You must listen carefully while the teacher is speaking because it’s the easiest way for you to learn. Sometimes you may find that taking notes stops you from listening carefully. After class, you can write down what you remember or borrow your friends’ notes to copy.
Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands, you are probably a kinesthetic learner. Taking notes by writing can make you pay close attention to information as you receive it. Of course, you can learn best by making full use of labs or other class activities.
Hope you learn better by knowing what your personal learning type is.

In China, many parents place a heavy focus on their children’s good results in study, but vocational (职业的) skills have little been cared.
“Some parents do everything for their children,” says Yan Mei, a teacher in a primary school, adding that many students are short of the basic skills needed in their daily lives. For example, Yan says, some parents would do the school’s general cleaning instead of their children. Since March last year, the governments have given out a lot of policies (政策), requiring that colleges, middle schools and primary schools pay more attention to teaching students practical skills.
Following these policies, the primary school founded an “agricultural (农业的) class base” on one of its schoolyards. Students plant fruit and vegetables on an area of land about 4,000㎡ in size.
In the days coming up to the May Day holiday, students of different grades at the school worked together in the fields, says school principal Yang Bo. They planted watermelon, carrot and corn. May Day, also known as Labor Day, is celebrated on May 1st in China.
The school hopes that students will understand the food is quite valuable so that they will better realize the difficulties that their parents went through.

It has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework assignment (任务).
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks (局域网), CNN reported.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on assignments. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread unclear information.
“It does not build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for learning and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Besides bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to prevent the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drawing up policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, the headmaster at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on ChatGPT are not wise, “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he said. “What we need to do is to adapt (适应) our learning, teaching and examinations. That way, we can be honest while using the tool.”

I found myself at a checkout counter behind an elderly woman seemingly in no hurry as she paid for her groceries (食品杂货). A PhD student without a lot of money, I had hurried into the store to pick up some flowers. I was in a huge rush, thinking of my upcoming evening. I did not want to be late for this date.
We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversation between strangers. The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me. She smiled. It was a nice smile—warm and friendly and I returned her gift by smiling back.
“Must be a special lady, whoever it is that will be getting those beautiful flowers,” she said. “Yes, she’s special.” said, and then to my embarrassment, the words kept coming out.
“It’s only our second date, but somehow I am just having the feeling she’s ‘the one’.” Jokingly, I added, “The only problem is that I can’t figure out why she’d want to date a guy like me.”
“Well, I think she’s very lucky to have a boyfriend who brings her such lovely flowers and who is in love with her,” the woman said. “My husband used to bring me flowers every week, even when times were tough and we didn’t have much money. Those were unbelievable days; he was very romantic and, of course, I miss him since he’s passed away.”
I paid for my flowers as she was gathering up her groceries. There was no doubt in my mind as I walked up to her. I touched her on the shoulder and said, “You were right, you know. These flowers are indeed for a very special lady.” I handed her the flowers and thanked her for such a nice conversation.
It took her a moment to realize that I was giving her the flowers I had just bought. “You have a wonderful evening,” I said. I left her with a big smile and my heart warmed as I saw her smelling the beautiful flowers.
I remember being a little late for my date that night and telling my girlfriend the above story. A couple of years later, when I finally worked up the courage (勇气) to ask her to marry me, she told me that this story had helped to seal it for her—that was the night that I won her heart.

About eight days ago, I noticed he was doing a video call with a friend and using sign language (手语). After he ended the call, he looked so sad. I thought I should say something to comfort him or just ask if he was okay, but we wouldn’t be able to understand each other. The only thing I could do was put my hand on his shoulder and smile. I felt so helpless. It started eating away at me how lonely and isolated he must feel.
From then on, I started staying up a few hours a night after work learning American Sign Language from some videos I found online.
This morning, I “said” hello to him for the first time and asked him how he was by using sign language. The shocked smile on his face made all the late night and tired days worthwhile. Needless to say, it wasn’t a big deal, but he happily got his phone out, typed in a message and handed me the phone. It just said “thank you”.

【推荐3】I have always loved music. When I was a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a rock star. Sadly, my effort didn’t match my love, and soon the guitar my mother bought for me lay quietly in the corner. I hated pressing my fingers down on the hard strings. At one time, my guitar teacher shook his head and said I had the rhythm(韵律) of a duck.
Before 2020, I had always believed that I was unable to learn a musical instrument. Then came the lockdown(封控) of 2020. I had to stay in a hotel in Chiang Mai in Thailand with my friend’s guitar. Being locked in the hotel, I had nothing to do but pick up the guitar.
I focused on how to play five of my favorite songs on the guitar. I started slowly, learning how to play by following online classes. I have to agree that counting time(节拍) was very difficult for me, so I gave it up. I just listened to the songs, focused on their rhythms and tried my best to follow them.
Day by day, I started to sound less and less terrible. I practiced the five songs every morning until I found my own rhythm and developed my own style of the songs, even after the lockdown in Chiang Mai was over. Finally, on May 28, 2022, I gave a guitar performance to some strangers and friends. I was so nervous that I forgot to turn the microphone on at the beginning. But when I hit the first chord(和弦), my music was greeted with loud cheers. It was my best memory of 2022.
In short, my word of this past year or the past three years is FOCUS. Time passes by quickly. Another new year has now arrived. Why not set yourself a clear goal (based on your love) and focus on it? Never let anyone tell you what you are not good at. By focusing on your goal, you will be able to surprise everyone.
