A crow(乌鸦)noticed that white doves(鸽子)could get food from humans. He was hungry and hoped to get food from humans as well. He cried but nobody noticed him. He thought, “It’s better to be a dove than a crow.”

Just then he saw a bucket(桶)full of white paint. He jumped into the paint and flew out. Now, he was as white as a dove. Then he flew towards doves and ate corn given to doves. None of the doves noticed that there was a crow among them.

The crow was so happy that he cried loudly, “Caw, caw.” All the doves found that this bird in white was a crow. They started to hit him and forced him to fly away.

Later, the crow saw some crows and thought, “Ah! Friends.” He flew towards them but the crows were surprised to see a white bird flying among them. They all flew away, leaving him alone.

Suddenly it started raining and the rain washed away the paint. The crow became sad and he flew towards another group of crows. The leader of the group asked him what had happened, and the crow told his story. After hearing the story, the leader said, “Copying others never lasts long and can’t bring happiness. Always be yourself.”

Jake decided to climb the highest hill near his village. The people said, “It’s too hard, Jake! No one has ever made it to the top.” But Jake wanted to try. He started climbing early in the morning. The path (道路) was filled with lots of dangerous rocks. Halfway up, Jake fell down and hurt his knee. Sitting there, he thought about going back.

Then, he saw a tiny ant trying to carry a big leaf. The leaf dropped many times but the ant kept trying. Seeing that, Jake thought, “If that tiny ant can keep trying, so can I.”

【推荐2】根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

The Harry Potter series (系列丛书) by J.K. Rowling is considered to be one of the most beloved stories of all time. There are plenty of life lessons that can be learned from the series. Here are four of my favorites:

Friends will always try their best to help you.

Whenever Harry finds himself in trouble, Ron and Hermione face it with him together. Harry, Ron and Hermione complete each other with their own talents. With the support of friends, anything is possible.

It is great to be smart, but sometimes, it isn’t the most important thing.

There are more important things than smartness — friendship and courage. As Hermione points out, sometimes knowing the right answer is not enough. Harry would never have been successful without the help of Hermione, but his courage makes him able to fight for what he believes in.

You control your future through the choices that you make.

Sometimes it may seem everything is out of your hands. However, with the right mindset (心态), you can control your life. For teenagers, everything seems to be controlled by pressure from parents, teachers and friends. But your thoughts and actions can make everything change.

Love is the most powerful weapon (武器) you can have.

Love saves Harry many times throughout the stories. Harry understands that he is more powerful than Voldemort, not because he is a better wizard (男巫) but because Voldemort never knows love. Harry’s love for his friends allows him to put them before himself. It is just love that makes Harry Potter go through hard times.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the characters, the stories and the writing of the Harry Potter series. Not only are they interesting, they also teach us many valuable life lessons.

【推荐3】A rich man is riding along the road and sees an old man digging(挖) in his garden. On the ground lies a young tree. The rich man calls out to the old man, “What kind of tree are you planting there, my good man?”

“This is a fig(无花果) tree, sir.” He says.

“A fig tree?” the rich man is very surprised, “Why, how old are you, may I ask?”

“I am ninety years old.”

“What!” cries the rich man, “You’re ninety years old. You are planting a very young tree now and it’ll take many years to give fruit. I’m afraid you can’t live long enough to get any fruit from this tree.” The old man looks around the garden. Then he says with a smile, “Tell me, sir.
