Studying at a girls’ school, we seldom see boys. But in September, we got a chance to dance and talk with boys.
In the morning, all of the girls discussed this activity. But when the boys came, we stopped at once. After a welcome speech, the first activity took place: find a boy partner and learn five things about each other.
At first, the situation was so strange that nobody moved. Gradually, some people started talking.
“Would you like to be my partner?” the boy next to me said.
“Sure,” I replied.
We stood together and asked each other questions like “What’s your name?” after we took the first step, the rest was easier.
To my surprise, we had a lot of interests in common. We both like British singer Ed Sheeran. Also, English is our favorite subject.
The most exciting part was dancing. The teacher taught boys and girls separately (分别地), we all smiled and studied hard. The lesson didn’t last long, as we had to practice with our partners.
To be honest, it was my first time to hold a boy’s hands. I made many mistakes even with the simplest steps, but my partner never blamed me.
My hands got sweaty (出汗), my partner said, “Don’t be nervous. I will lead you.” his palms were big and warm, I began to calm down and enjoy dancing.
At the dance, we built good relationships with the boys and our teachers encouraged to do so. I really like this type of activity.

Sometimes I could make my own inventions, such as electronic toys from car parts and peach-picking sticks. I also made other useful daily things for my neighbors.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. One night, a lion came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. However, catching the lion, I thought, was not a safe way to solve the problem. So I decided to “invent” a solution. The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought the lion was scared of fire. But I came to know that didn’t help, because it was even helping the lion to see through the cowshed (牛棚). However, I didn’t give up. I continued. And a second idea I got was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lion into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But the lion was very clever. It came the first day, saw the scarecrow, and went back. But the second day, it came and found that the scarecrow didn’t move. It was always there! So the lion jumped in and killed another cow.
However, one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a torch (手电筒). To my surprise, the lion didn’t show up. Then I realized that the lion was afraid of a moving light. So I had an idea…

【推荐3】Oscar Bloom was unhappy. It was his eighth birthday: All his friends were going to come over that evening. His little sister Samantha had made him the brightest, friendship-birthday bracelet. He had heard his dad whispering to his mom the day before about “picking up the little puppy,” and had a feeling that one of his presents might be a little dog that he had been wishing for ever since he was five.
So what was wrong?
Oscar was sad because there was one very, very, hugely important person who was missing today—his beloved Grandma Rose. Last year she fell ill and then one day she just wasn’t there.
“Grandma’s gone, but she still loves you very much,” mom explained.
“I miss Grandma Rose,” Oscar said.
“Well, Grandma has a present for you!”
A present from Grandma? How?
“My dear Oscar,” the recording began. “I’m sorry I can’t be there with you today to celebrate such an exciting day, but I’m with you in spirit. I’m with you all the time. As your birthday present, I’d like to tell you about the day you were born, which was the very first day I met you. That was exactly eight years ago. What a tiny little thing you were back then! The doctor hardly had time to pick you up before you started to make sounds! Every doctor waits for the baby to cry, to make sure the baby is healthy, but you, Oscar, you changed the rules on them. Your mother doesn’t remember this because she was so tired, but I will never forget it. You opened your mouth, and you gave a little laugh! That’s right, you laughed! And only then did you open your mouth wider to start crying like all the rest of the babies in the hospital. I hope you remember this story for the rest of your life, young man,” Grandma Rose continued. “This is the beginning of your oral history! My present to you!”
Oscar couldn’t believe his ears. His own Grandma Rose was telling him a story he had never heard before. A big smile grew across Oscar’s face. What a special birthday this had turned out to be!
