At my school in the UK, Design & Technology(D&T) is a very popular class. Unlike other subjects such as math, D&T is for students to design (设计) and make things to solve problems in real life.
This semester, my D&T teacher asked us to make a product. (A) I chose a bookshelf as it is one of the easiest things to make and it can be used in my room.
The project includes three stages: planning, modeling (建模) and manufacturing (制造). During the modeling stage, we need to learn to use the software CAD to model the product before making a real shape of it. Manufacturing is the most important and time-consuming (耗时的) stage. Students need to build their product from the modeling draft (草图), using materials the school provides like plywood (胶合板), plastic and steel.
After modeling my bookshelf as one with three shelves, I started making it. I sanded (用砂纸打磨) the plywood and used it to cut the first five pieces of wood. Then I glued them together to make the first box.
The second box was a bit hard to make as it included a gap to put a slide (滑动部件) in. The third box is the base (基础) box of the other two boxes. To make the middle area stronger, I added a support board to (B) it. The final step was to screw (用螺钉固定) the three boxes together into a whole.
I enjoyed this class because it helped me to develop hands-on skills. (C) After building my bookshelf, I felt more confident in myself. I can solve more real-life problems in the future.

“More young people should have science lessons at school and university(大学).” Hazel Wallace, a Science teacher from London, said at a meeting for university students last weekend. “Science can change the world and make people live better. We need more people who want to teach science.”
But there was bad news from Dr. Benson, a university Science teacher. “There's a real problem with Science teaching in schools. About 35%physics(物理) teachers in schools don’t have a physical degree(物理学学位). Not enough people are studying Science at university and this means that there are not enough science teachers.”
Mrs. Wallace didn't agree. “It’s true that the number of Science pupils fell between 2000 and 2010,” she said. “But now the numbers are going up again. The number of students who study science lessons at school is much higher now than it was in 2010.”
Dr. Benson thought that numbers were still too low, “We should interest 12-16 years old in studying Science. There’s still a problem with science lessons in UK classrooms. Some of them are too difficult or boring for students. As for teachers, old ways of teaching have to change. We must change the way most young people think about Science. Science can also be fun. Students can take part in more science activities at school. ”

Wilderness survival (赖以生存的) skills were necessary in the past, but now, people hardly use them. Teachers at the Deep Green Bush School in New Zealand think this might not be right. What if one day people have to live a primitive (原始的) life? So, the school hardly teaches reading, writing or math classes. Instead, students go out to learn how to find food, cook and learn about plants and animals.
Teachers and students at the school believe that if you can survive in the wild, you can survive anywhere. But are these wilderness survival skills really important? After all, we now live in a modern world.
In today’s world, people need to learn many other skills to be successful, such as how to find a job, drive a car or speak a foreign language. It seems that most of us don’t learn survival skills because we don’t need them anymore.
In fact, survival skills change along with time and the development of society. And it’s useful for people to have many skills. So why not learn some wilderness survival skills? At least, you will learn more about nature and yourself.
1. What skills do people hardly use now?(不超过5个词)2. Why do people learn many other skills in the modern world?(不超过10个词)
3. What does the writer want us to do?(不超过10个词)
