The winter holiday is usually a good time to sleep in. But Gao Yuqi, a 14-year-old boy from Anhui, got up at 7:00 am to run at least 2 kilometers every day during the holiday. In fact, this exercise was part of this homework.
Gao was not alone. Many schools across the country required students to exercise during the winter holiday. Part of the reason is that physical education test scores are now worth more on the senior high school entrance examination. And the score is now worth up to 60 points.
Because of this, Gao’s school now asks students to run when the weather is nice, and exercise indoors if it is bad. Students have to post (公布) exercise photos in their classes’ QQ groups. At the Golden Apple Jincheng No. 1 Middle School in Chengdu, students have daily exercise plans. For example, they have to skip rope (跳绳) for two minutes and do three sets of sit-ups (仰卧起坐) each day. Their parents sign of (签名) on their plans when they finish exercising.
This has been a big challenge for many students, but has also helped to make exercise a bigger part of their lives. Many students like Gao used to hate running, but now they are able to run for over half an hour every day. They fell in love with exercise during the holiday.

Do you like walking? Walking plays an important role in both people’s physical and mental health.
On one hand, it is an effective way to burn our calories, so we can stay in shape. On the other hand, walking can release our stress, reduce anxiety. But do we really need to walk 10,000 steps a day?
The answer is no. This goal was created by a Japanese company that invented a pedometer (计步器). Research shows that walking 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day is best for people under 60, while walking 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day is best for people over 60.
This is because older people need fewer steps to get the same benefits. And the speed of the walk is not significant, what is significant is the total number of steps walked. If you can’t walk quickly, increasing your daily steps can also be beneficial.
Although walking 10,000 steps a day may not be necessary, keeping a suitable level of physical activity is very important for staying healthy. Walking a few thousand steps a day or doing other forms of exercise can bring health benefits. For example, biking, jumping rope, swimming, playing basketball, and so on are all good ways to exercise.

Perhaps there are apples from California or potatoes from Egypt. You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer (消费者). Why is this, and what are the effects (影响) of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn’t have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local market to buy the food. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import (进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, get 85% of its food from other countries.
I believe these miles are worrying for some reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, trucks and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global (全球的) warming. Besides, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces (makes sth. less) the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.

Having high expectations could be good. It can motivate you. When you have high expectations for something, you’ll probably try your best to make them come true. For example, if you believe that you can get an A in a test, you will probably spend a lot of time working on it. Also, when you start meeting your expectations, you’ll set even higher expectations for yourself. Besides, having high expectations on yourself doesn’t only do you good. It will make a difference to others.
But if your expectations are too high to realize, it can be bad. Having high expectations can sometimes lead to mind problems, such as worry and unhappiness. The findings of a study showed that some students were under serious stress(压力) because they wanted to be perfect. Great expectations can also let you down. This is especially true when you set expectations on other people whose actions you cannot control. For example, if you’re feeling alone and you call up your friends, you surely expect them to make you feel better. When this fails to happen, you will feel down and unsatisfied with your friends. To avoid this situation, you should set your expectations realistically(切合实际地).

On a school day, 60 students at Xishan Primary School in Shunde, Guangdong, are learning how to make corn soup in an after-school cooking class. Working in groups of four or five, the little cooks take their jobs very seriously. Soon, they are showing off their own delicious dishes.
Since last September, the school has set up after-school classes for students, with cooking classes being the most popular, said Xinhua. It comes after the “double reduction policy(双减政策)”. The policy aims to lower down the schoolwork burden(负担)on primary and junior high school students. According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework.
Great progress has made through the policy so far. Almost all primary and middle school now offer two-hour after-school services on weekdays. More than 90 percent of students can finish their written homework in the set time. “Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.” According to Shen, teachers are teaching at a much slower speed, which gives students enough time to process new information.
