Michelle, a famous lady, has found that more than 25% students are too fat in her country. It is a very serious problem. So she starts a health program to deal with it. The health program is to reduce (减少) the amount (数量) of fat students today and in the future.
The program will get families, schools, newspapers, magazines and TVs to join together and deal with the students’ obesity so that students will be at a healthier weight. The program includes: Food stores should sell healthier foods. Schools should serve healthier meals with less fat and should also offer gym classes.
The lady is trying to fight the students’ obesity all over the country because it can cause illnesses and higher health cost. She wants the students to eat right, exercise more and control (控制) their weight. She also wants the students to understand it is important to have less sweet food, and drink water, milk and fresh juice, but not to choose cokes. At the same time she has also set a good example by planting a vegetable garden. She hopes that the garden will encourage more people to plant one too.
The health program is really helpful to the students today and in the future. As she says, we cannot always build the future for youth, but we can build our youth for the future.

This happens when food lacks the vitamins and minerals people need to stay healthy, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
At present, “hidden hunger” affects 2 billion people worldwide, including 300 million people in China. It is most commonly seen among children and teenagers and can result in bad immune system, blindness or even death, China News Service reported.
Many Chinese people don’t get enough iron, calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D. One main reason is that agricultural products don’t have much of these nutrients. Over 40 percent of China’s farmland is lost its vitamins and minerals, lowering the nutritional value of the crops that grow on it, according to Xinhua.
Many of the processed foods that people enjoy eating today, such as chips, burgers and cookies, have made the situation worse. Vitamins and minerals area easily lost when these foods are processed. People’s Daily noted.
The human body needs 16 kinds of minerals, including iron and calcium, and 13 kinds of vitamins, including vitamins A and D, to stay healthy. Vitamins help maintain healthy eyes and skin and allow your bones to grow properly. Minerals are important for maintaining blood pressure and making new cells.
In response, China’s government has created several action plans to improve public health, as well as develop and promote nutritious foods.
Eating more fresh nutrition—rich food like vegetables, whole grains and dairy can help us stay healthy. For vegetables like carrots and broccoli, boiling and steaming can better preserve their nutrition when compared to frying them, CNN suggests.

According to a study from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, kids who experience trauma have an increased risk of having heart disease(疾病)in their 50s and 60s.

Yet, look closer, and you might notice a familiar scene: many of these students are not paying attention. Instead, they are dozing off(打盹)or even completely asleep.
Today, the majority of high school students are not getting enough sleep. This lack(缺乏)of sleep is a serious problem, especially as students are doing more than ever with their time. They come to school early, spend hours listening to teachers and taking tests, then run off to practices and meetings, and come home to be faced with even more work. And the homework load these days is not light; teachers give hours worth of homework each night.
Most kids need at least nine hours of sleep per night in order to function properly. Yet the period of this nine hours shifts as a child gets older. After puberty(青春期), the body's internal clock changes so that it is difficult for teens to fall asleep before 11 p. m. So even if a student falls asleep at eleven, they would need to sleep until at least 8 a. m. to get a full night's sleep. Considering the time at which most high schools in this country begin, those nine hours are clearly being shortened. Few high schools start after 8 a. m.
However, there are schools that have paid attention to this research and pushed backward the start of their school day. In schools where the start time is after 8:30 in the morning, the teachers believe that there has been a real change in their students. They note that the students miss class less, pay more attention in class, perform better in class, and report lower levels of depression(沮丧), The researchers of these studies say that the results are quite important and that more schools should consider pushing backward their start time of their school day.
1. Which of the following would the author agree with?A.High school students must go to bed before 10 p. m. |

Cold-Water Winner
At 40°F, water is so cold that most people would freeze. But champion swimmer Lynne Cox is not like most people. She became the first person to swim from the Bering Strait island of Little Diomede in Alaska to Big Diomede in Russia. Cox baffled(难住) scientists who didn’t think the swim was possible.

For the first time the princess smiled at Abanazar.
“Why not?” she said. “You are a rich man and I am happy here. Yes, let’s drink to that.”
And she gave him a tall gold cup with the drink and powder(粉末)in it.
“Let’s drink from one cup, Abanazar.” she smiled at him. “You first, then me. In my country new husbands and wives always do this.”

On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car.
I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Irritated, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mama asked calmly.
“No,” I said.
“We are going to volunteer at a children’s shelter today. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn’t stop crying. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars. Others hid their emotional wounds.
As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle tug on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi. You want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.
My mom taught me a valuable lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. 【推荐1】Americans spend billions of dollars each year trying to change their weight. Just having an eating health care costs nearly $2,000 per person in the US. Why are so many people trying their best to look “perfect”?
One reason is that society rewards (奖励) people who are thin and healthy-looking. Researches have shown that a good body shape has something to do with wages (工资), especially for women. That means how much you’re paid every month partly depends on how your boss considers your body shape.
Besides, women always care more about their weight than men. They always think they’re heavier than they actually are.
However, trying to live up to the pictures of “perfect” has a dark side: worry, depression (抑郁) and unhealthy ways to lose weight.
Tom Quinn, a director of external affairs, says people who aren’t satisfied with their body shape might develop an eating disorder. “This is only one of many illnesses that it can lead to.” he says.
So how can we start to deal with a problem that is deeply rooted in our society? State of Michigan has done something to stop this kind of discrimination (歧视) on body shape. Michigan changed laws—whoever treats others less fairly just because of their body shape would be punished.
I believe more actions will be taken to protect our rights. Hope people always put their health first and get rid of the misunderstanding of having a “perfect” body shape.
