Last month, students of Junior 2 from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School took a special test. They took it by traveling.
The students stayed in Nanjing and Yangzhou for five days. Their teachers gave each student a list of questions to answer during the trip. The questions were also the students’ mid-term test for history and geography. There were questions like: How long is the Beijing-Shanghai Railway? Why did the six dynasties choose Nanjing as their capital?
“I never had so much fun with an exam,” said Guo Fei, a 14-year-old student. “We learned a lot.” The students learned much more than just the answers to the questions. They also visited the Nanjing Massacre Museum(南京大屠杀纪念馆). The students did not get to sleep on the train to Nanjing. Usually the kids would sleep on a train journey, but this time they all had seats. “The seats are not the same as our chairs at home,” said Dong Hao. “I know most workers travel in this way. That must be very hard!” The students also learned how to take care of themselves. They wash clothes and make the beds by themselves. “I learned a lot of skills,” said Huang Yuan. “I never knew I could do so many things.”

That journey is not an easy one because every day it makes us face new problems in new ways. When I was a little boy, I liked moving around. I always looked forward to the next trip or the next holiday. Maybe it is because I lived in a small and boring town. How I wanted the school holidays and how I could go to the coast! I went there with my friends and cousins, and we had so much fun. I also met some people and sometimes we would travel together exploring (探索) different towns and beach side place.
When I finished high school, I kept moving. In my first year out of school, I traveled with a friend. We visited seventeen countries in Europe, working different jobs as we went. What an adventure (冒险) we had! No one could keep us still! When one place or one job became boring, we went off. If we didn’t like the people we were staying with, we said goodbye. In this way I went to three different universities to study and lived in five different towns.
All this carried on for many years until I got married and had my own family. Now having a family is a different thing because you cannot choose who they are as you want. When you stay in the same place with the same persons, you start a whole new journey. That is the journey of facing your mistakes and trying make them right. Rather than walk away and meet someone new when you make a mistake, you have to say that you are sorry and try again. When the ones you love hurt you, you may feel angry or unhappy. But instead of making the decision to leave, you have to try to tell them how you feel and forgive (宽恕) them.
Then you will stay in the same town, choosing one place to live and one job to remain in. There again you are challenged to face life, doing things such as paying your bills and trying hard to get along well with your boss. You have to keep on at your job when you feel like giving it up and traveling again.
So rather than move around on different trips, you are on a new journey. This journey of staying still is just as important as all the travels in the world.

But with the fast development of the Internet, some students have found a new way to deal with their homework recently. Instead of finishing their homework by themselves, they ask the Internet for help.
Since most of the holiday homework is the same from school to school, this makes it possible for some people to sell the homework answers on the Internet. Usually one must pay about 50 to 100 yuan for the answers for one subject of the homework. A survey shows that 90% of the students complain their homework is too much and they don’t want to do it by themselves.
To solve the problem, some schools have stopped using the standard homework and turned to other forms of homework. As for students, they must remember “No pains, no gains”. If today they pay for their homework answers, perhaps one day they will pay more for their laziness.
1. How much is the price for the answers for one subject?2. How do some school students deal with their holiday homework?
3. Will you buy the answers on the Internet if you have much homework? Why or why not?
If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn(赚)your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Today, we consider zero as a common number. Few of us know zero has an unusual history. Zero is, in fact, very different from other numbers.
At first, there were only the numbers one to nine. Zero first appeared in India about 2,000 years ago. Many other ancient cultures had been marking nothingness. However, the ancient Indians were the first to consider nothingness a number.
Little by little, global communication became more frequent(频繁). Finally, zero was brought out of India. It was accepted as an Arabic numeral. During the 13th century, Arabic numerals were introduced into the West. However, westerners had been used to using Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.). Arabic numerals were not popular. This was especially true for zero. Since there is no zero in Roman numerals, people found it hard to accept the new number. Dishonest business people could easily turn a “0” into a “6” or a “9”. Some people, therefore, believed zero would cause much trouble. Zero was also considered an unlucky number. That’s because it’s too negative(负面的) and close to the idea of having debts(债务). France and Italy even banned(禁止) the use of zero citywide.
It was not until 15th century that zero and the other Arabic numerals were fully accepted. Business people played an important role. Just thinking about doing calculation(计算)using Roman numerals. You can hardly do any trade, can you?
