There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but the person who lives inside.
I met Miss Clark about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. My parents told me I could start school when I was 4. However, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September. Anyway, I was finally in Miss Clark’s class—Room 3. She always created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be at that moment.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss Clark to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I was surprised at how she connected with children. For years, Miss Clark volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asked me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement (地下室). We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids.
On the papers of the letters, I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly my mind goes back to Room 3. Over 40 years ago, Miss Clark sat on a chair while my classmates and I sat at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss Clark sits on her rocking chair, and I sit at her feet. We talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her.
Our friendship is one that neither of us expected.
Educators know teaching is a job for the development of each young student. The lucky ones get to see what their students have done with their lives. The excellent ones never leave their students’ hearts.

Letter writing can be fun. Samantha Webre, a third-grade teacher at Woodvale Primary School in the US, wanted her students to experience this.

“It’s important for kids to learn about different writing types, and letter writing is just one of them. A personalized letter can show the receiver that the writer takes time to do it. And the writer has a chance to be creative,” said Samantha. “It not only helps the students improve their writing skills but also makes the receivers feel better.” She once created a video for her students and read aloud Ten Thank-you Letters by Daniel Kirk.
Zhorie’l, one of Samantha’s students, said, “My younger sisters and I have been using all kinds of tools like stickers, crayons, and even paint to make our letters special. We’re not able to visit our grandparents often, but we can always send them a letter. It’s as powerful as a big hug (拥抱).”

Mark was one of the latter. He had to get around in a wheelchair. But he always had a positive attitude (积极态度) and greeted everyone with a huge smile.

But when the three reached the finish line, they stopped and turned to look behind them. At the back of the crowd was Mark. He was alone on the track with over half the distance left.
Mike, Andy and Lucas looked at one another, and a silent thought passed among them. Slowly, they ran back toward their friend. They formed a circle around Mark and kept pace, cheering him on as he had done for them before.

While some can live together peacefully, others may face conflicts (矛盾) that need to be worked out. According to a recent survey of students in 12 different universities in Wuhan, only 40 percent of them are satisfied with their dormitory friendships and 35 percent said they kept away from conflicts in the dorm.
For those living in a dorm for the first time, sharing things, such as a computer or paper towels, can be a source of conflict. Another common conflict is related to different habits. What they are going to do, such as going to bed, watching movies or studying, will also cause a conflict. Sometimes roommates may also have problems when welcoming guests, especially those of the opposite sex.
However, there are more effective methods to solve problems than screaming at each other. The best way is to talk about an issue before it even becomes a problem. You should treat roommates honestly and directly, and try to work out a solution. And you can also set up rules that everyone can obey. These rules can be written down in an agreement and be put up in a visible (看得见的) place. Students can also outline which items to share and which are for personal use. They can regulate cleaning duties, agree on a time to sleep, and decide on how to receive guests.
In any discussion it is important to talk with your roommates in a positive way. For example, you could mention your roommates good personality. This can help them understand you better and make them more willing to compromise (妥协).
