② People around the world hope that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxis in or out of cities. These cars could save time in emergencies that happen suddenly and help reach places that can’t be reached by road. They also hope to save the space on the ground. Flying cars won’t use runways, because they are able to take off and land by going straight up and straight down.
③Last September, SkyDrive, a Japanese company, showed off its new flying car SD-03. With a pilot on board, the car was flown around for four minutes.
④Flying cars need strong power to fly in the sky freely like the airplanes. SkyDrive designed the SD-03 powered by batteries (电池). There are eight motors (发动机) lifting it straight off the ground. The design also produces less pollution.
⑤Although the SD-03’s test flight was successful, we may not see flying cars in our daily life anytime soon. ▲ Safety is a big problem. What happens when a motor fails? If a flying car is crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just the people in the car but also people on the ground. That’s why the SD-03 has eight motors — some are backups (备用物). Flying cars are also very expensive. The SD-03, for example, is expected to sell for up to $500,000.
⑥Yet people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced lots of challenges at first, too. Over time, many of their biggest problems were solved. Tomohiro Fukuzawa, who leads SkyDrive, hopes that by 2050, people will have been able to fly anywhere inside of Tokyo in ten minutes or less.

Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the light. This was really strange. Cait didn’t know what to do. Just then, Cait’s father appeared and explained Doug was sleepwalking.
②Not all sleep is the same every night. We experience some deep, quiet sleep and some active sleep, which is when dreams happen. You might think sleepwalking would happen during active sleep, but a person isn’t physically active during active sleep. It usually happens in the first few hours of sleep in the period called deep sleep.
③The truth is that not all sleepwalkers walk. Some simply sit up or stand in bed or act like they’re awake when, in fact, they’re asleep! Most, however, do get up and walk around for a few seconds or for as long as half an hour.
④Sleepwalkers’ eyes are open, but they don’t see the same way they do when they’re awake. They tend to go back to bed on their own and won’t remember it in the morning.
⑤You also might have heard that sleepwalkers can get frightened if you wake them up. That’s true, so what do you do if you see someone sleepwalking? You should call for a grown-up who can lead the person back to bed. And once the sleepwalker is back in bed, it’s time for you to get some sleep, too!

Some parents also used the apps to help children with their homework. “It is already challenging for me to solve fifth-grade math questions,” a parent surnamed Lu told online newspaper Sixth Tone. “The Apps can help me to check his homework.” However, not anymore.
On Dec 13, the Ministry of Education said that homework help apps, which allow students to get answers by taking photos and uploading them online, will be removed temporarily (暂时). These apps may make students lazy, affect (影响) their independent thinking and go against the law of education and teaching, the ministry said.
Some online tutoring (辅导) apps may be affected, and they have many users. For example, the Zuoyebang app had more than 100 million users in 2020, according to a report by Xueyan Thinktank. Meanwhile, at the end of 2019, about 8.6 billion searches had been made in the Xiaoyuan Souti app. It solved at least 23.47 million questions each day, reported Global Times.

【推荐3】Growing up, we’ve heard a lot of stereotypes (刻板印象) of how sex (性别) influences interests and jobs. For example, boys do math better than girls, while girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys’ and girls’ brains work. But is it true?
According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might affect (影响) how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning (扫描) people’s brains. However, in most of the studies, researchers only scanned dozens of people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need to scan the brains of a few thousand people at least.
In 2021, the UK Biobank, a big database used for research, scanned the brains of 40, 000 people in the UK, providing new insights (了解). It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another third were larger in women.
However, these differences were very small, often just a size difference in percentage. The differences are not big enough to form a conclusion (结论) from them, Camille Williams from the University of Texas at Austin, US, told New Scientist.
Also, our brains might change in structure and size according to our life experiences. For example, even if a part of a man’s brain, responsible for doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is possibly because he takes jobs that use math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a cause, of different roles in life and society, noted New Scientist.
