People sometimes like to read stories of dogs very much. They think that dogs are much cleverer than cats, sheep, cows or other animals in their homes.

I’m Joe. One of my close friends, Bob, is a policeman. He has a very large police dog named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon. Bob and Jack have a walk in the park nearby. Jack likes these walks very much.

One Sunday afternoon, I paid a visit to my friend. I stayed there for a long time and my friend and I had much more talk with each other than ever before. Soon it was time for them to take a walk in the park. We forgot that. Jack became worried about it. He walked around the room several times and then sat down in front of me and looked at me. But I still paid no attention (注意) to him and went on talking with my friend. At last, Jack could not wait any longer. He ran out of the room and came back a few minutes soon. But this time, he held my hat in his mouth. Suddenly, I understood what Jack meant and so did my friend.

People in the countryside are used to having unexpected visitors—wild animals like frogs and snakes. But what if the visitor is an elephant?

Pu Cuifen, a villager from Yunnan Province, experienced that two years ago. “I’ve only seen elephants in a zoo before, not expecting a wild elephant would appear at my doorstep,” said Pu. The elephants were harmful to no one, but had corn and beans on the farm. The villagers lost up to 50,000 yuan. Earlier than that, villagers would drive away the elephants to protect their crops (庄稼), which made the animals angry and led to human injuries (伤害) or deaths.

Now the government has helped to pay the money for the crops damaged (破坏) by elephants. Such things will help protect the interests of farmers, and at the same time avoid the wild animals being hurt by humans. The government has also created “dining halls” for the wild elephants to grow their favorite food, such as elephant grass and bamboo. Villagers now simply leave the elephants alone. “Our corn might get damaged, but we treat them with care and accept them with love.” said Pu.

Yunnan Province is not the only example of protecting wild animals. In Tibet, Migmar used to be a hunter (猎人), but now has become a rescuer (营教者) at the wildlife rescue station of Qomolangma. He and his friends take turns to go around to check there’s no trouble or danger for wild animals every day. The wildlife rescue station was set up in 2019. From then on, they have saved 17 wild animals. During this period, they learned to bandage the animals and clean their wounds, and set them free into the wild when they got well again. “尽管动物不会说话，但是我能够感知到他们的信任，因此我们有责任保护他们。”said Migmar.

Examples of taking care of wild animals appear more around us. From damage to protection, people see more changing human-wildlife relations. Even the simplest change and action can make a difference to the world.

【推荐1】There was a big lake in the forest. A crocodile (鳄鱼) with his wife lived in the lake. They ate fishes. There was a big tree stood by the lake. A monkey lived in it. He ate fruits. The monkey and the crocodile met every day and often played together.

One day, the crocodile’s wife saw the monkey and she wanted to eat the monkey’s heart. She said to her husband, “I don’t want to eat fishes in the lake any more. I think the monkey’s heart must be delicious. Go and get it for me!” The crocodile didn’t agree. But his wife added, “Don’t worry. Just bring him here and try to push him down into the water. ” After thinking for a long time, the crocodile agreed.

The next day the crocodile invited the monkey to play by the lake. While they were playing, the crocodile pushed the monkey down into the water. The monkey asked the crocodile why he did that. The crocodile said, “My wife wants to eat your heart.” The monkey was shocked but he said, “I left my heart in the tree. Let’s go to take it.” The crocodile agreed. When they reached the tree, the monkey climbed up the tree quickly and said, “My heart is in my body.”

The monkey was really smart and saved himself in the end. When we are in danger, we need to keep calm and to think of ways to get out of danger.

There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to coloursb—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere.

Dickon and Mary’s seeds grew and the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume.

Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects.

One day, he watched a mole（鼹鼠）digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.

One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I’m going to tell you something very important.”

“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.

“I’m going to do a scientific experiment（科学实验）,”he said. “When I grow up, I’m going to make scientific discoveries about magic and I’m going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir!”said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn’t really understand.

“I believe that there is magic in everything.”continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden, too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I’m going to say: “Magic is in me! And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?”

“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.

They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious.

“Now, let’s begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting（吟唱）.

“Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”

Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.

Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first, he held Dickon’s arm, then he walked a few steps alone.

“I can walk! The magic worked!” he cried.

“What is the doctor going to say?” asked Mary.

“Nothing.”Colin answered, “because we aren’t going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It’s a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite.”

“He’s going to think it’s a dream,”said Mary.
