A Chinese worker, who cared for the injured and dealt with a dangerous situation and then got lost in the mountains, has been saved 17 days later.
Gan Yu, a worker at Sichuan’s Wandong hydropower plant(水力发电站), was on duty with his co-worker, Luo Yong, on Sept.5 when the 6.8-level quake hit southwestern Sichuan Province. Luo prevented flooding by pouring water from the dam before he joined Gan Yu, who stayed behind to give first aid to injured co-workers. Then the pair ran to the plant and turned off the generator(发电机). They tried to leave the far-away power station, walking around for 20 kilometers. But Gan, who has very poor eyesight, had lost his glasses during the quake and found it difficult to walk in the mountains. They finally decided that Gan should stayput while Luo went looking for help. Luo left Gan some wild fruit and bamboo shoots to eat. Luo was found on Sept.8, but by the time Gan’s pieces of clothing and footprints were discovered on Sept.11, he had disappeared.
Luckily, the story didn’t end here. On Sept.19, a local farmer, Ni Taigao, returned to his village at the foot of the mountain where the power plant is, and heard about the news of looking for Gan. The villager put his local knowledge to use and joined the search. During hours of trekking(艰苦跋涉), he heard Gan’s weak cries and soon noticed him. There are no superheroes in this story, but ordinary people like the three turned into heroes.

Some adults think it would probably never happen to them, so they don’t teach their children what to do. Before it’s too late, here are ways to help you prepare your child for a disaster:
Educate: It is always good to let your child know about possible disasters. This doesn’t mean children have to live in fear. When teaching them about disasters, you can keep the conversation positive(积极的)by telling them there is a solution(解决办法)to the disaster. Keep the conversations short, and allow for questions and answer honestly.
Prepare: Always be prepared, and that is the best advice for children. For example, when preparing for bad weather, get the tools you need, like candles, radios, food, water and medicine. Teach your children what is needed in certain disasters so that they know what is available for them.
Plan: You should always have a plan for you and your children for any dangerous situation. Write out a simple list that they can read. The plan could start with “listen to an adult’s advice or call 119”.
Practice: Once you have got the correct safety tools and worked out the right plan, practice every few months. Practicing what to do during a disaster with your children will help them if the time comes.
Disasters can’t be avoided but they can be lessened(减轻)once you are prepared and ready for one.

He was shocked. He didn’t know what he should do for a while, then he remembered the words he had said to his son, “No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He started digging through the ruins (废墟).
As he was digging, other helpless parents and the firemen arrived and tried to pull him off the ruins, saying , “It’s too late! They’re all dead! There’s nothing you can do !” To them he replied, “Are you going to help me now?” And then he kept on digging.
No one helped, however. He went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or he is dead?” He dug for eight hours…12 hours… 24 hours …36 hours …then , in the 39th hour, he pulled back a rock and heard his son’s words. He shouted his son’s name, “ARMAND!” He heard back, “Dad! It’s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you’d save me and when you saved me, they’d be saved. You promised, ‘No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you!’ You did it, Dad!” “What’s going on there? How is it?” the father asked.
“There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We’re frightened, hungry, thirsty and thankful you’re here. When the building fell down, it made a triangle (三角), and it saved me.”
“Come out, boy!”
“No, Dad! Let the other kids out first, because I know you’ll get me! No matter what happens, I know you’ll always be there for me!”

Spear’s interest in China began during college when he took a class taught by a Chinese professor. Then he decided to move to China to get to the heart of things. Spear and his wife discovered their future home in Mutianyu after meeting Li Fengquan, who would later become a lifelong friend. Li helped the couple rent a traditional village farmhouse and a nearby piece of land in Mutianyu. As an architect, Spear tried to renovate (修复) his dream house, with views of the Great Wall. “In the fog, clouds or rain, it is always beautiful,” Spear says. “Seeing the Great Wall every day reminds me of how great people here can be.”
One day, the village head Li Lianting told Spear that Mutianyu was losing residents (居民) and in need of local businesses. This made Spear decide to renovate around 20 houses, some of which now operate as hotels or restaurants, while doing his best to keep the structures without changing the design and materials.
It’s not an easy thing for Spear to do his work, as he has spent a great amount of time studying traditional Chinese architecture, even feng shui, the study of great location and position of buildings and rooms. He explains that his method includes designs that reflect the wall, but don’t copy it.
Spear sees plenty of possibilities in China because of the growing focus on keeping historical structures. “I love living here. I like China,” he says.
