The Sunday Mail magazine interviewed some parents about whether children should do chores at home. Different people have different opinions.
Ms Miller thinks that kids these days already have enough stress from school. They do not have time to study and do housework, too. Housework is a waste of their time. They should spend their time on schoolwork in order to get good grades and get into a good university. When kids get older, they will have to do housework. So there is no need for them to do it now. She thinks that doing chores is not so difficult.
However, Mr. Smith disagrees with her. He thinks it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. It’s not enough to just get good grades at school. Children these days depend on their parents too much. Doing chores helps children to be independent and teaches them how to look after themselves. It also helps them to understand the idea of fairness. Everyone should do their part in keeping the house clean and tidy. The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.

The following is a letter to a newspaper and the reply from Robert Hunt, a school counselor(辅导员).
Dear Mr. Hunt,
My problem is that I can’t get on with my family. Relations(关系) between my parents have become difficult. They fight a lot, and I really don’t like it. It’s the only communication(交流) they have. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this. When they argue(争吵), it’s like a big, black cloud over our home. Also, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favorite TV show. Instead he watches what he wants until late at night. I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. Is that normal(正常的) for a girl like me?
What can I do?
Sad and Thirteen
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Dear Sad and Thirteen,
It’s not easy being your age, and it’s normal to have these feelings. Why don’t you talk about these feelings with your family? If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help. Maybe you could do more jobs around the house so that they have more time for proper communication. Secondly, why don’t you sit down and communicate with your brother? You should explain that you don’t mind him watching TV all the time. However, he should let you watch your favorite show. I hope things will be better for you soon.

However, I always expect something different. What will life be like without all the modern conveniences (方便条件)? Last Friday, I got a chance to get the answer to this question.
My cousin Jack has a treehouse at the top of a hill in Colorado. Staying in that treehouse is like going back to the old days. There is no electricity or running water. There are only two chairs and a bed in the house. Jack told me how to cut wood, make a fire and cook over a fire. Time was everything. We had to start to make dinner early so that we could have enough daylight to do that. But the life without computers, TVs, and smart phones was not bad. There was much time for talking, walking and going sightseeing. I also slept better there. Jack’s sister Jenny cooked breakfast for us. In the morning, when I woke up, I could smell the delicious food with the morning light warming my face. I stayed there for two days. On Sunday afternoon, I had to leave the treehouse and go back home.
It’s hard to say which kind life is better. However, I do think we should try to enjoy a break now and then from the convenient (方便的) and busy modern life.

Sophie, a 14-year-old British girl, suddenly changed her behavior in class. She lost interest in studies and would sit in the corner with her head mostly down.
Ethan Miller, one of Sophie’s teachers, discovered that she was bullied (欺凌) online. Sophie was receiving abusive (辱骂) messages on her phone and on Faccbook. Miller shared Sophie’s story on the official website of The Children’s Society, a children’s charity in the UK.
Sophie was not alone. One in three young people, in 30 countries, said they have experienced online bullying. Twenty percent of those bullied students were not willing to go to school because of it, according to a report in September. The study surveyed more than 170, 000 young people aged 13—24 from countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Seventy-five percent of them said that the most common online bullying cases happened on social media, like Faccbook and Twiter. The growth of social media has left many young people hurt through unfriendly and abusive messages, comments and pictures online.
The Internet world makes it easier for people to communicate with each other, but there is more danger for young people as well —and it is surprising that online bullying troubles many young people more than anything else. What’s more, online bullying could lead to serious results for young people. Such bullying makes young people more than twice as likely to hurt themselves or even kill themselves, according to a 2018 study by the university of Oxford, UK. The research also found that young people facing online bullying were not as likely to ask for help as those bullied by traditional ways.
To deal with the problem, UNICEF has called for national helplines to support people who are bullied, along with training for teachers and parents to prevent and deal with online bullying.
Here is some advice to keep yourself away from danger on the Internet.
● Make sure that you’re careful and respectful to others, even if you don’t share similar opinions, values or beliefs.
● If you experience online bullying, the best response (回应) to a bully is no response at all.
● Keep a record of anything that shows proof (证据) of online bullying, like screenshots. You can use this to report and stop them.

Mobile phones can take your attention away when you’re trying to focus on something. That’s why the Dutch government is banning (禁止) them ——in classroom, at least.
The government has announced that from January 1, 2024, students will not be allowed to use their mobile phones in classrooms, unless they are needed for medical reasons.
Robbert is the education minister of the Netherlands. He said that although mobile phones are a big part of our lives, there is no need to have them in the classroom. “Students need to be able to concentrate and need to be given the chance to study well. Mobile phones are a disturbance (干扰) , scientific research shows. We need to protect students against this,” he said.
The ban has come about through an agreement between the government education department, schools, and relevant organizations. At first, it will be left up to schools how they enforce (执行). If the ban doesn’t work, legislation (立法) and binding (约束) rules may be introduced before the summer of 2024.
“We are going to look very closely at whether this decision works,” Robbert said. “Because, of course, there could always be a legal (合法的) ban. But I actually believe that we can arrange (安排) this together. ”
The move follows similar steps taken recently in Finland, a country that is widely regarded as having one of the best education systems in the world and which is also the birthplace of Nokia, one of the most important companies in the development of mobile phones.
The Netherlands is not the first country to introduce a ban like this. In 2022, Italy took similar steps. France has also had a ban in place since September 2018. France bans mobile phones from schools for children bet-ween 3 and 15 years of age, and China introduced a similar ban in 2021.

DIY projects are very popular and there are lots of TV programmes which show people how they can improve their homes.
Some people prefer easy decorating – putting up wall- paper and painting walls, but there are many other DIY projects that people decide to take on, from changing the new floor to setting a new shower.
Unluckily, some people bite off more than they can chew(不自量力), and try to take on jobs which end in DIY disasters(灾难). For example, the shops often tell their customers that anything electrical(电的)should be done by an electrician. However, many people don’t care about this warning and put themselves in danger.

For this, there are many reasons but most of them come from not being able to properly understand their teens. It is a dangerous gap because parents will have to communicate with their teens about a wide variety of issues(问题) during the most important years of their lives. Thus, parents must know how to communicate openly and honestly with their teens.
Here are a few tips to make communication easier between parents and teenagers.
1.Try not to look down upon your teens. Make them feel as if their views really matter, which not only helps your discussions with your teen but also brings you closer to him.
2.Imagine what it would be like to be a teen. Try to remember feelings you experienced as a teenager and apply it to your teen’s situation.
3. Never make negative(否定的) remarks to your teen about what he has said or done.
4.Remember how much courage it would have taken for your teen to come and talk to you about his personal issues. So listen respectfully.
5. Try to offer some help to your teen when they face some difficulties. For example, if your teen is unusually angry, it may be time to spend a bit of time with your teen to find out what is wrong and where it is coming from.
It is, therefore, necessary for parents to keep lines of communication open at all times with their teens. Try to remember what it was like to be a teenager and how weak you felt. Then you will be well on your way to help your teen communicate more openly and honestly.

Do you often put off doing something that you should be doing? It’s a bad habit called procrastination(拖延症).
The 2-Minute Rule is a method of ____①____ with the problem and the goal is to make it easier for you to get started on the things you should be doing. It includes two parts. Part 1 comes from David Allen’s book, “Getting Things Done”. It’s surprising how many things we put off that we could get done in two minutes or less, for example, taking out the litter, cleaning up your desk and sending an e-mail. If a task takes less than two minutes to complete, then follow the rule and do it right now.
Can all of your goals be achieved in less than two minutes? Of course not. ____②____, every goal can be started in 2 minutes or less. And that’s the purpose behind the rule’s second part. Once you start doing something, it’s easier to continue doing it. The most important part of any new habit is getting started--not just the first time, but each time. I love the 2-Minute Rule because it accepts the idea that all good things happen once you get started.

Sure, it's good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes, it's good to get along well with your teacher because, in general, it's smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you'll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they're more comfortable about asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and do their best on tests.
Here is a question: what if you don't get along well with your teachers? In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes (冲突), which can happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better, he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen. By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However, if a certain teacher isn't your favourite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her. Here are some of those responsibilities:
Attend class and be ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right pencils and books.

In this way we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren’t open with others, we won’t fully believe in ourselves or others.
Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same with your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. For example, you might say, “I feel happy that you’re here,” instead of, “Are you glad that you’re here?” Finally, try not to say, “I don’t know.” This usually means I don’t want to think about it any more.
Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don’t know well, because you are not sure how someone else will use what they know about you. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel very uncomfortable at times.
In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we’d better keep the balance between being open and not being too open.

It can be very dangerous if there is a flood(洪水). It can happen with no notice and can usually wash trees and cars away, even break buildings.
What should you do when the flood comes? Please read carefully the following information.
① Stay away from rivers and bridges, because floods can cause rivers to move quickly and bridges to fall down.
② Listen to emergency broadcasts(急救广播)for further information. If it asks you to move somewhere else, do so.
③ If you are staying inside a car, get out when the water begins to fold the car itself. Then move to the top of it.
④ If you have to stay in a building at the time of a flood, move to the highest floor. Only move to the roof(屋顶)if necessary. Once there, ask for help and let others know where you are (such as drawing SOS on the roof).
⑤ Don’t touch power lines(电线), because they are broken during strong storms and floods. A fallen power line can cause water near to become dangerous. If someone touches it, he will die.
