As there are over 80 apps and 300 websites for live streaming in China, the Internet regulators can hardly monitor what’s going on all the time. “We support the use of live streaming. Do you help your parents with housework around the house? Can you cook for your family? According to People’s Daily, a study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spent 12 minutes a day on housework, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. In 2020, China gave special attention to labor education (劳动教育) in primary, secondary schools and colleges.
Housework like cooking always ends up at the bottom of many of our to-do lists. Some students even think that they should be taken care of by parents. However, these abilities are important and should be taught as part of labor education. Students can get labor education in different ways, such as doing housework, cleaning in schools, and volunteering in communities. “Labor education must be paid more attention to because it can develop students’ right view of the world, life and values,” said a government leader. Through such education, students are expected to learn basic abilities as well as forming good working habits.
Middle school students are required to work more than 3 hours every week. The government also asks high schools to make sure that students have 40 hours of volunteer service during the full three school years.
1. In which country did students spend the most time doing housework?2. Who should take care of them according to some students?
3. How many ways of getting labor education are mentioned in the passage?

Green World is a company which sells health and beauty products. In May 2021, Green World began a program that rewards(奖励)customers for recycling empty product packaging(包装). In a few months, Green World recycled more than a ton of plastic.
Should governments give rewards for recycling too? The TV station did a survey among the students from a local school. Here’s what three of them said.
Mike, 13
People should be rewarded for recycling. San Francisco has a program that rewards recycling, and it works best in the United States. By rewarding recycling, many cities would be cleaner.
Peter, 14
Even though people don’t recycle enough, they know that the best reward is providing a cleaner environment for the future world. Rewards will only encourage people to use more plastic products.
Anne, 12
People shouldn’t be rewarded for recycling. They should recycle anyway because the world has a lot of waste. Do people need a reward for throwing rubbish? No. It’s just the right thing to do.

Why do you set goals (目标)? Because goals can help you do and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.
Successful people imagine what their life will be like and set many goals. It’s like a map to show you where you want to go. With it, you can get there easily. Think of it in this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination (目的地) in mind which can be found on a map. So he can drive straight there. But the other driver has no destination. He starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but he drives aimlessly around. Which driver do you want to be?
Winners in life set goals and follow them. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren’t difficult to set and reach. It’s up to you to find out what your goals really are.
Research tells us that when we write a goal down, we are more likely to achieve (实现) it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. They are harder to be neglected (忽视) or forgotten. When you write your goals down in a particular (特殊的) way, they will bring you nearer to what you want.
1. Why should we set goals?2. Who imagine what their life will be like and set many goals?
3. Which one would you like to be if you want to get the destination easily?
4. Are goals difficult to set and reach?
5. What will they bring you when you write your goals down in a particular way?

On Dec. 9, three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth! Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, who are working aboard the Tiangong space station, showed millions of students a glimpse of their life there. They also did some fun science experiments. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity (重力). But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands (弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch (拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill (跑步机) and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
Space water is different
During another experiment, Wang made a water film (膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why?
We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力) of water. Surface tension is like a “skin” of water.
The “skin” is there because water molecules (分子) are drawn to each other. One example on Earth is that some bugs can “walk on water”. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the “skin”. But with zero gravity in space, the “skin” stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Space water is different in many other ways from that on Earth. For example, water will not flow downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws (吸管) in sealed (密封的) bags. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe them away!
1. Why does bone and muscle loss happen in space? (within 15 words)2. How does the “penguin suit” help fight muscle loss?
3. What else do astronauts do to prevent muscle loss?
4. How did Wang set up the water experiment?
5. How do astronauts drink water in the space station?

Students in our school are not allowed to bring mobile phones to school. Last week,
Playing is an important part of childhood. It’s fun and it helps children learn skills and stay active. Whether it’s creating imaginary world out of building blocks or simply riding a bike, children love to play and they need toys. But what happens to the toys which are no longer enjoyed, or the bike that becomes too small as the child grows? Usually, they are kept somewhere and forgotten. To avoid this happening, we should make it possible to rent (租) toys. That way, they can be sent back and someone else may need them.
If lots of people share toys, it’s better for the environment because fewer toys have to be made. Making toys uses resources such as energy, plastic and wood. It can be bad for the environment. It also means children can have the chance to try out lots of different kinds of toys. Once they are bored with a toy, they can send it back to recycling banks and get a different one from them. I think it’s an environmental-friendly way and it is clean because there will be less mess to clear up at home or fewer cupboards filled with toys.

3. What kinds of resources are used to make toys?
4. Where can people send toys back to and get a different one?

CCTV Hosts Live Stream Sale
With the development of Internet, online sales and live stream(直播)sales have become important ways to help the sales of products from poor areas.
On the evening of May 1st, International Labor Day, CCTV hosts held a program of live stream sale organized by some e-commerce(电子商务)companies, such as GOME, Taobao, and JD.com. They wanted to help Wuhan companies sell their products. The live stream sale was different from the traditional TV shopping, because the hosts turned it into an entertainment show, attracting a total of 23.5 million views. They achieved total sales of 528.6 million yuan (about 75 million US dollars) in three hours that night.
The live stream sale is no longer a new idea to Chinese people, especially after the pandemic(疫情期). Since April 2020, news host from CCTV and famous stars have been helping the sales of products in Hubei, the province hit hardest by COVID-19.

Live Stream Sales are ________
Many online celebrities have tried live stream sales online and on TV since the outbreak of COVID-19. More and more people buy things through this kind of sale.
Livestreaming (直播) has become very popular in China. Viewers can interact with hosts by messaging them, buying them gifts, or sending them tips. However, some children are spending too much money on livestream platforms (平台). Earlier this year, a 17-year-old boy in Jingmen, Hubei province, sent tips that added up to 150,000 yuan to a host. That sum of money was his parents’ life savings.
To prevent things like this from happening again, the National Radio and Television Administration introduced a new regulation (规定) to better manage livestreaming services on Nov 23rd, 2020. The regulation prevents children from tipping or sending gifts to livestream hosts and performers. It also requires people to register (注册) on livestreaming sites with their real names.
This new regulation has been welcomed by parents. According to Legal Daily, about one-fifth of livestream viewers in 2019 were children. “Online shows and livestreaming have become so popular. I always feel worried that my son might become crazy about them or do something that is harmful to his growth;” said Wang Haifeng, a mother of a 15-year-old boy in Beijing. “But now stricter management makes me feel safer.”
In addition to the regulation, there are some other measures that will be put in place to help manage livestreaming services. For example, livestreaming platforms will be required to put a limit on how much money people can send to hosts. Once the limit is reached, viewers will not be able to send gifts or tips. Other regulations include stopping livestreaming platforms from encouraging viewers to send gifts or tips. Any host who is found doing this will be added to a blacklist.
