Green World is a company which sells health and beauty products. In May 2021, Green World began a program that rewards(奖励)customers for recycling empty product packaging(包装). In a few months, Green World recycled more than a ton of plastic.
Should governments give rewards for recycling too? The TV station did a survey among the students from a local school. Here’s what three of them said.
Mike, 13
People should be rewarded for recycling. San Francisco has a program that rewards recycling, and it works best in the United States. By rewarding recycling, many cities would be cleaner.
Peter, 14
Even though people don’t recycle enough, they know that the best reward is providing a cleaner environment for the future world. Rewards will only encourage people to use more plastic products.
Anne, 12
People shouldn’t be rewarded for recycling. They should recycle anyway because the world has a lot of waste. Do people need a reward for throwing rubbish? No. It’s just the right thing to do.
1. When did Green World begin the program?2. Among whom did the TV station do a survey?
3. How would cities be cleaner in Mike’s opinion?
4. According to Peter, what is the best reward for recycling?

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw a cup of milk tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover(残留物) into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper into a recyclable waste bin; finally, throw the single-use cup and straw(吸管) into a dry waste bin.
Sound complex(复杂的)? You’ll have to get used to it. From July 1st,2019 on, people in Shanghai are required to sort(将...分类) their garbage(垃圾)according to strict rules. Garbage is divided into wet garbage, toxic(有毒的)garbage and recyclable garbage. Many other cities in China are planning to create similar sorting rules.
Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried in landfills, which may pollute water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertilizer(肥料). But in order to recycle efficiently(有效地), we need to sort our garbage.
Can’t garbage-processing companies do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the troublesome task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?
1. How many steps should we follow to throw away a cup of milk tea in Shanghai?2. When are people in Shanghai required to sort their garbage?
3. Why should we sort garbage?
4. Where is most of waste buried?
5. Which kind of garbage can be used to make heat?

Cherish the Valuable Resources
Playing is an important part of childhood. It’s fun and it helps children learn skills and stay active. Whether it’s creating imaginary world out of building blocks or simply riding a bike, children love to play and they need toys. But what happens to the toys which are no longer enjoyed, or the bike that becomes too small as the child grows? Usually, they are kept somewhere and forgotten. To avoid this happening, we should make it possible to rent (租) toys. That way, they can be sent back and someone else may need them.
If lots of people share toys, it’s better for the environment because fewer toys have to be made. Making toys uses resources such as energy, plastic and wood. It can be bad for the environment. It also means children can have the chance to try out lots of different kinds of toys. Once they are bored with a toy, they can send it back to recycling banks and get a different one from them. I think it’s an environmental-friendly way and it is clean because there will be less mess to clear up at home or fewer cupboards filled with toys.
1. What is the advantage of playing in childhood?2. How do people usually deal with the toys which are no longer needed?
3. What kinds of resources are used to make toys?
4. Where can people send toys back to and get a different one?
5. What does the writer think of the way to rent toys?

Live streaming(直播) is especial popular among the people aged 18 to 35. Besides leaving comments, they can also communicate directly with the hosts by buying gifts, such as flowers, toys and cars for them online. The latest example was the Olympic swimmer Fu Yuanhui. She did a one-hour live streaming, which attracted more than 11 million viewers.
What’s more, live streaming allows users to communicate with strangers and express themselves. A 19-year-old college student called Nic Li says she spends three to four hours each week talking and singing with viewers through one app called Ingkee. “Sometimes I feel lonely and want to talk to people, so I do live streaming,” she says.
However, there are worries about the misuse(滥用)of live streaming. Papi Jiang promised to correct her unsuitable and impolite language after she was warned by government officials(官员). As there are over 80 apps and 300 websites for live streaming in China, the Internet regulators can hardly monitor what’s going on all the time. “We support the use of live streaming. Strawberries look nice, but a light pressure can make them out of shape. Nowadays, there are many young people who are just like strawberries. They easily break down when they face-difficulties. They don’t know what to do when they are in trouble. They have a common name—strawberry kids.
Why are many students so easy to break down? Parents and schools are a main reason. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality (个性). Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mom hardly criticizes (批评) him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability. Students should do something to make themselves mentally strong. An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”
Growing up is no just a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them. Answer the following questions.
1. According to the first paragraph, when do many young people easily break down?2. Who criticized Liu Yue strictly?
3. When you are in trouble, what should you do first?
4. Why does the expert advise us to take an active part in sports and social activities?

Let’s imagine, you are a teenager who has just graduated from high school. Your goal is to have a successful job. What is the best way to achieve this goal? The correct answer is to go to university. Because right now, people who have a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) make 60% more money than high school finishers. They are also 3 times less likely to lose their jobs, and they are more satisfied with their jobs, too.
However, some people say degrees are useless. Why? One study found that there was only a low correlation (关联) between the person’s education level and how well they perform on their jobs. So is university worth it or not? To find this out, we firstly have to understand the real reason why university graduates are doing so much better in life. The universities would like you to think that it is because students are taught skills which are valuable in the job market. But this just isn’t happening.
Now, take a look at a degree in education. It is surprising that out of 170 studies, only 9% found that teachers with higher university education were better at teaching. The most of them found “no effect” and some of them even found a little bad effect. This means that the degree doesn’t do much to improve the teachers’ teaching skills.
Clearly, some people think universities aren’t that necessary to the process of learning. What do you think about it?
1. According to the passage, what is a teenager’s goal after high school graduation?2. According to paragraph 1, who make more money than high school finishers?
3. How many reasons of going to university are mentioned?
4. What are valuable in the job market?
5. How does the writer feel about the studies about a degree in education?

Life is full of the unexpected. On October 28, 2020, a serious traffic accident happened in Chongqing. A bus and a red car collided(碰撞) at the second bridge of the Yangtze River. The bus ran out of control on the bridge and crashed into the river. All 15 passengers and the driver in the bus were killed.
At the beginning of the accident, many people doubted that the red car was going the wrong way, causing the bus to fall into the river. Others guessed that the accident was caused by the driver’s sudden illness. However, a few days later, based on the black box, which was saved from the scene of the accident, together with the traffic records, the police announced(宣布) the truth.
Before the bus reached the bridge, a female passenger had a quarrel with the bus driver because she missed her station, but the driver refused to stop the bus. So she got angry and got into a fight with him. Because the bus speed was very high, the bus was out of control.
People from all walks of life paid more attention to the accident and expressed their opinions. Some people think the woman passenger made the trouble without reasons. She was regarded as the chief culprit(罪魁祸首). She shouldn’t have argued with the driver. Some people think drivers shouldn’t fight with passengers and they should keep calm and put the passengers’ safety first at any time. As for the other passengers, they failed to dissuade(劝阻) the two in time. Of course they didn’t know the result would be so serious.
Nowadays, tens of thousands of people die or get hurt on the roads every year in China. In my opinion, all of us should follow the rules and put the safety in our heart.

Many schools began to provide at least two hours of after-school services for students on weekdays in September, 2021. Instead of going to different subject-training classes outside school, students can stay at school to get after-school services including homework tutoring(辅导), sports and interesting activities. Students can choose one or two activities they like. After-school services not only make students learn better and live more healthily, but also make it easier for parents to pick up their children. More parents can pick up their children themselves instead of grandparents. In the past when schools closed at 4 pm, many parents were still at work and couldn’t collect their children. However, some parents expressed their worries. They really want to learn how they can help manage their children's study and life reasonably. Here are some tips. ◆Form good habits. Because of having more time, children are supposed to get into more good habits. Good habits can make all things easy. ◆Make plans. Making plans can help children manage their time better. Put aside their pleasures until their plans are finished. ◆Make full use of the time at school. Children should finish all their homework at school and solve all the problems in time. Don’t leave today’s work for tomorrow. ◆Help around the house or in the community.
