Strawberries look nice, but a light pressure can make them out of shape. Nowadays, there are many young people who are just like strawberries. They easily break down when they face-difficulties. They don’t know what to do when they are in trouble. They have a common name—strawberry kids.
Why are many students so easy to break down? Parents and schools are a main reason. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality (个性). Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mom hardly criticizes (批评) him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability. Students should do something to make themselves mentally strong. An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”
Growing up is no just a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them. Answer the following questions.
1. According to the first paragraph, when do many young people easily break down?2. Who criticized Liu Yue strictly?

I like traveling and I have traveled a lot around China. During the trip, I often find that a number of Chinese don’t have good public manners(举止). For example, when I traveled in Hong Kong in January this year, I saw a kid eating noodles on the underground, which is against the rules. However, the kid’s mother didn’t think he did wrong. Can you believe it? Let’s improve our public manners. (Mike, Shenzhen) |
I am a 14-year-old boy from a poor village in Fuyang, Anhui Province. Like many other left-behind children(留守儿童)in China, I live with my grandparents now. My father went to work in Shanghai several years ago. Last year, my mother went there to care for him because his health is not as good as before. They tell me to listen to my grandparents and call me about twice a month to ask about my study. I really miss my parents and I hope I can afford to go to school in Shanghai. Playing is an important part of childhood. It’s fun and it helps children learn skills and stay active. Whether it’s creating imaginary world out of building blocks or simply riding a bike, children love to play and they need toys. But what happens to the toys which are no longer enjoyed, or the bike that becomes too small as the child grows? Usually, they are kept somewhere and forgotten. To avoid this happening, we should make it possible to rent (租) toys. That way, they can be sent back and someone else may need them.
If lots of people share toys, it’s better for the environment because fewer toys have to be made. Making toys uses resources such as energy, plastic and wood. It can be bad for the environment. It also means children can have the chance to try out lots of different kinds of toys. Once they are bored with a toy, they can send it back to recycling banks and get a different one from them. I think it’s an environmental-friendly way and it is clean because there will be less mess to clear up at home or fewer cupboards filled with toys.
1. What is the advantage of playing in childhood?2. How do people usually deal with the toys which are no longer needed?
3. What kinds of resources are used to make toys?
4. Where can people send toys back to and get a different one?

Is there a school that gives no homework? Of course. Cherry Park Elementary School in Oregon, USA is an example. The teachers at this school say no to homework. They ask their students to play outside, read books or spend time with their family after school. The headteacher Kate Barker believes homework can help middle school students learn better, but it does little good to primary school students. So they decided to take the no-homework policy(政策) last year.
Many students and their parents think the policy is very good. “There’re enough exercises for us at school. There should be no homework after school,” says one student. Some education experts(专家) don’t think so. “Our study shows homework can help young students to be successful,” said Harris Cooper, a teacher at Duke University. Johnson, a 10-year-old boy said he and many of his classmates felt bored without homework.

Let’s imagine, you are a teenager who has just graduated from high school. Your goal is to have a successful job. What is the best way to achieve this goal? The correct answer is to go to university. Because right now, people who have a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) make 60% more money than high school finishers. They are also 3 times less likely to lose their jobs, and they are more satisfied with their jobs, too.
However, some people say degrees are useless. Why? One study found that there was only a low correlation (关联) between the person’s education level and how well they perform on their jobs. So is university worth it or not? To find this out, we firstly have to understand the real reason why university graduates are doing so much better in life. The universities would like you to think that it is because students are taught skills which are valuable in the job market. But this just isn’t happening.
Now, take a look at a degree in education. It is surprising that out of 170 studies, only 9% found that teachers with higher university education were better at teaching. The most of them found “no effect” and some of them even found a little bad effect. This means that the degree doesn’t do much to improve the teachers’ teaching skills.
Clearly, some people think universities aren’t that necessary to the process of learning. What do you think about it?
1. According to the passage, what is a teenager’s goal after high school graduation?2. According to paragraph 1, who make more money than high school finishers?
3. How many reasons of going to university are mentioned?
4. What are valuable in the job market?
5. How does the writer feel about the studies about a degree in education?

The sun was falling behind the hills. Andrea was driving back home to Brockboune. Then she saw an old lady, standing by the road, with a sign saying “Brockboune” in her hand.
Andrea stopped the car. When the old lady got in, Andrea could see that she was not that little. She was in a long dress and had a hat pulled down low over her eyes. She put her big brown shopping bag down onto the floor.
“Do you live in Brockboune?” asked Andrea. “No, dear,” answered the old lady in a low voice, “I’m just going to visit a friend, but my car won’t start, so I decided to hitchhike.”
Something in the way the lady spoke made Andrea uneasy. Andrea secretly studied the half-covered face, the shapeless body, the arms with their thick black hairs… Thick black hairs? Andrea’s blood froze. This wasn’t a woman. It was a man!
Her heart was beating wildly and her mind raced. Then suddenly, an idea came up to her. She stopped the car in a sudden. “My God!” she shouted, “A child! Did you see the child? I think I hit her!” “I didn’t see anything”, the “old lady” said, “I don’t think you hit anything.” “I’m sure it was a child!” shouted Andrea. “Could you just get out and have a look?” The “old lady” slowly opened the car door, leaving her bag inside. Many people enjoy travelling. There are many ways to travel: by plane, by train, by ship or by car. Everyone has their favourite way.
When you get tired of your work or study, and when you have free time, you can choose a beautiful place or other cities. You can enjoy fresh (新鲜的) air, meet different people and make friends with them. It is fun to talk with local people during the trip. And if we choose to travel by train, we can spend a lot of time reading books or magazines on the way.
But sometimes, travelling is not an enjoyable thing. For example, the weather can be changeable. It may be rainy when you travel. If you go out without an umbrella, you may get wet and catch a cold. The worst thing is that the thieves (小偷) may steal your money. All these may happen to a tourist.
Before you go on a trip, you must get everything ready. First, you must have clear information about the weather. Second, go with your parents or friends so you can ask for help if you are in trouble. Third, you must be careful and keep safe. If you do these, you will surely enjoy your travelling.
