Nowadays, more and more people keep pets at home around the world and they love their pets so much and they see them as members of the family. Do you have pets? Do you play with your pet dog or cat? Do you like touching animals like rabbits? They are cute. But sometimes they can be very dangerous. If your pet dog bites (咬) you, then you will possibly get a disease—rabies.

In China, lots of people got rabies in the first nine months of 2019. In September, about 300 people died of rabies. That is 30% more than last September.

Dogs, cats, rabbits and bats may have rabies. If they bite or scratch (抓) someone, the virus (病毒) of rabies could go into the person’s body. The person could even die. It’s important to get the right treatment (治疗) very soon. It’s reported that around 60, 000 die of rabies every year all over the world. Unluckily, most deaths happen in Asia and Africa. India has the most death. China is the second.

Rabies is so terrible, but there is still something we can do to save ourselves from having it.

The most important is that it’s best not to get too close to your pet dog or cat, especially when you have a wound (伤口).

A fever, defined as an increase in body temperature over 37.3, is a common sign of illness. But recently, it has caught uncommon attention: It can be a sign of catching COVID-19. Whatever the cause, here are some things you should remember if you develop a fever.

Don’t drink certain drinks. Alcohol, soda and coffee should be avoided when you have a fever. They can cause your body to lose water when it really needs a lot of water.

Do not dress too warmly or put yourself in a place that is too hot. This can influence the body’s ability to regulate(调节) its temperature and make your fever worse.

Don’t take medicine without the doctor’s advice. Although fever-reducing medicines are very useful for treating fever, taking more than the recommended amount can lead to serious harm to your health and even death. For children, the amount should be smaller.

Don’t stay hungry. The old saying “Those with a cold should eat, while those with a fever should eat nothing” is wrong and dangerous. Fever speeds up your metabolism(新陈代谢). Hunger also reduces the body’s ability to fight off disease. So you need to get more energy from food.

Don’t forget to drink water. A fever will increase the number of breaths, causing water loss. The body also sweats more as it regulates its temperature. In addition, people usually drink less water when they have a fever, which will finally cause the body to lose water faster.
