Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction (瘾). When we eat sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and influences parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a stronger effect.
“It seems that every time I study an illness, I find the sugar is the main cause,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One third of adults have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million adults have diabetes (糖尿病). Why? “Sugar, we believe, is one of the main reasons,” says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to keep sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for the time when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
It’s clear that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s very difficult to avoid. Our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers (制造商) even add much sugar to foods that are advertised (做广告) as what are low in fat. This may make the food appear healthier, but too much sugar may be harmful.
But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are offering more fruit instead of desserts. Other schools are building facilities for students to do exercise. The battle (战斗) has not yet been lost.

The study is from universities in Oxford and Hong Kong, China. Almost 400,000 people took part in it. They answered questions about their lifestyle, food, and what raw (生的) and cooked vegetables they ate. The study actually found that the risk of dying from heart problems was around 15% lower for those eating the most vegetables, especially raw vegetables.
However, scientists explained that many other factors (因素) also have something to do with this 15% drop. These factors may affect (影响) our health just as much as vegetables. These include other things we eat, how much exercise we get, where we live and whether we smoke or drink. Lead researcher Dr. Qi Feng from the University of Oxford said, “Our large study did not find clear evidence (证据) that how many vegetables you take can cut down chances of heart problems.”
But does it mean that eating vegetables is futile? No. Many other scientists advise that people should still eat at least five kinds of fruit and vegetables every day. That’s because vegetables are important for keeping good health and reducing (减少) the risk of serious illnesses.

A new study has shown that the color of a bowl can influence the taste of the food inside. Scientists from the UK gave people potato chips in red, blue and white bowls. The chips in red and blue bowls were believed to be saltier than those in white bowls.
Earlier studies have tested strawberry cakes. People felt the cakes on white plates tasted sweeter than those on black plates.
Why is that? A scientist from Oxford University said the answer is in our brain. More than 50 percent of the area of the brain is related to seeing, while only 1 to 2 percent is related to taste. Our brains depend heavily on what color we see to deal with our experiences of food.
But the “taste” of color depends on people’s earlier experiences. For example, if you have eaten a very sweet, white-colored ice cream, you may relate white to sweetness. In the study above, scientists said that in the UK, salty snacks often come with blue packaging(包装). That could be why people thought the food on blue plates tasted saltier.
1. What did scientists from the UK ask people to do?A.Write down chips with different colors. |
B.Make potato chips in different colors. |
C.Taste potato chips in different colored bowls. |
D.Guess the taste of potato chips in different bowls. |

According to a new study, the Amazon rainforest may become grassland(草原)in a few years.
The Amazon is the world’s biggest rainforest. Climate (气候), the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. The trees may die and the rainforest could turn into a hot, dry grassland.
Why is the Amazon “sick”?
The Amazon is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three hot dry weathers have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They turn the forest into the farmland. All these activities have caused about 17 percent of the rainforest to disappear.
What will happen if we lose it?
If the Amazon “dies”, there will be more CO2(二氧化碳) and our Earth will become even hotter. The Amazon is also home to many animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They will just disappear too.
判断正(A)误(B)。
1. The Amazon River is the world’s longest river.
2. China is smaller than the Amazon rainforest.
3. The Amazon rainforest will turn into grassland because of itself.
4. When the Amazon was a wet place, the trees there couldn’t catch fire easily.
5. If we lose the Amazon rainforest, many animals will die too.

Starting in 1931 in Florence, Italy, the yearly event has become a special chance for everyone on our planet who cares about animals to make a difference. This year, the theme is "A Shared Planet”. “As we share this Earth with all living things, we can truly make a difference to all animals, “wrote the event’s website.
In past years, China has done much to improve the well-being of home and wild animals. The protection of Asian elephants is a good example. Asian elephants have become in danger because of killing for their teeth. Asian elephants in China are mostly found in Yunnan Province. These wild animals sometimes eat local farmers’ crops. The government has been trying to create a more friendly relationship between local people and wildlife. For example, they ban (禁止) trading elephant teeth. To improve animals’ living condition, the government makes rules for building separation facilities (隔离设施) to keep away wandering (游荡的) wild animals.
With World Animal Day around the corner, we all can think of more ways to better protect our wild friends.

But in the 1960s, they began to disappear because of pollution and other human activities. In 1981, Chinese scientists found seven of them in the wild in Yangxian, Shaanxi Province. They were believed to be the last ones in the world. But now, they have been saved from extinction.
Researchers say its population has risen to more than 5, 000 around the world. There are 3, 000 crested ibises in Yangxian alone. The birds’ survival (幸存) is because of China’s early protection efforts, according to Zhang Yueming, an expert who helps protect the birds in Yangxian.
On the fourth day after finding the ibises, the local government put up a lot of notices to protect the birds. Then, it stopped people from cutting down trees. Later, it set up the Qinling No. 1 protection station and sent four people to look after the birds day and night. During the daytime, they watched and recorded the birds’ habits and conditions. At night, their job was to keep them safe.
To help the ibises have more babies, a rescue and breeding center (救助和繁育中心) was set up in 1990. At the center, crested ibises are fed by people and can receive timely help when they are sick or hurt. China’s protection of crested ibises is an example in the world's history of protecting endangered wildlife.
