My grandfather had a small farm. He also worked in a factory.

One autumn, he promised to help his neighbor harvest their corn, but after harvesting (收割) his own corn, Grandpa’s little corn picker (采摘机) broke. At the same time, the factory asked him to work for a longer time than before. He had to leave the farm before the sunrise (日出) and didn’t get home until the sunset (日落). It now seemed impossible to help his neighbor.

One night, Grandpa decided that he wouldn’t let his neighbor’s harvest rot (腐烂) in the field. Without a machine, he’d harvest it by hand.

“When do you think you’d have time to do it?” asked my grandma. “Besides, it’s too dark.”

“I know of one night that I could do it!” he said. “There’s still one more full moon in October. If the weather is clear, I think I can do it. ”

And so a few days later, after a long shift (轮班) at the factory, my grandpa made his way to the field. The weather was cold but clear, and the moon was shining. He worked all night to keep his word. Sometimes, when I want to put off responsibilities (责任), I’d see my grandfather cutting corn in the light of the harvest moon. Behind him, row (行、排) after row of corn stocks (秸秆) stand in respect (尊重) for a man who keeps his word.

【推荐1】A young man went to visit a sage(智者)living deep in the mountains for the wisdom(智慧)of life. “Excuse me! Could you please tell me what is the most important day in our lives?” the young man asked. “The most important day in our lives is today,” the sage replied calmly.
“Why?” The young man felt more than surprised. “Is it because today is a great festival or there was a great event happening?” “No. Nothing special has happened today. Today is very important because today is the only thing we own. No matter how memorable(值得怀念的)yesterday is, it went away, no matter how bright tomorrow may be, it is yet to come, but no matter how simple today is, it is really at our hands. So work hard to celebrate the greatest festival in life. It is: Today!”
The young man still wanted to ask something, but the sage stopped him and said, “When we are talking about the meaning of today, we have missed a lot of it.” The young man agreed and then went down the mountain.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了Susie和她的妈妈帮助史密斯太太的故事。

【推荐3】“Hi, mommy, what are you doing?” asked Susie.

“I’m making a dinner for Mrs. Smith next door” said her mother. “Why?” asked Susie, a six-year-old girl.

“Because Mrs. Smith is very sad, she lost her daughter and has a broken heart. We need to take care of her.”

“Why, mommy?”

“You see Susie, when someone is sad, he or she has trouble doing the little things like making dinner or other easy things. Because Mrs. Smith is our neighbor, we need to do some things to help her.
