The Spring Festival is a time for children to receive lucky money. Do you think parents should look after their children’s lucky money? Here, some middle school students are sharing their ideas.

○ Tian Yun said, “Lucky money should be kept by parents because children generally don’t have much experience with money and are likely to form the habit of splashing out.” She thinks they can’t control themselves when they see things they like. So when they graduate from high school, they can manage their money.

○ In Wang Xin’s opinion, it is too difficult for young children to manage their money wisely as there are so many distractions (干扰) outside. With a lot of money, they may be cheated by bad persons, which will make them get into troubles.

○ However, Hou Yi thinks children should be free to spend their lucky money because it’s a good chance to develop their money management skills. Children will be able to learn how to use their money properly. What parents should do is to guide them correctly.

○ When it comes to Cui Han’s idea, children should be trusted to manage their money. According to the latest Civil Code(《民法典》), 8 years old is a dividing line. That means children over 8 have the right to deal with their own money. They won’t depend on their parents too much.

文章大意:本文是一篇社会文化类说明文。斯坦福大学教授德韦克经过40年的调查研究认为人们对待失败有两种不同的思维模式,这两种思维模式对我们如何对待失败有很大的影响。

【推荐1】Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children fight against failure without defending (保护). The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before.     1

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years.     2     Here’s how they work:

A fixed mind-set is based on the belief that talent is genetic (遗传的) –you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person.     3     When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

4     Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame (羞耻). When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth.     5

A.But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated (击败) by failure.
B.On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is completely heaven (上天) -sent and that effort and learning make everything possible.
C.Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets (思维定式) that have a great effect on how we react (反应) to it.
D.The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame.
E.As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”
F.So it’s easy for her to divide them into two different groups.

Modern Technology – a personal view by Andrea Buchner                                           July 23

I really think the way most young people use modern technology so much is almost antisocial(不合社交的). Let me give you an example. Last week my niece came over for dinner, she’s seventeen and addicted(沉溺) to her mobile phone. The whole way through dinner she was on her phone, sending messages, tweeting and chatting online with friends. It was crazy! When I asked her about it, her reply was “Well, I need to stay in touch with my friends”. But, I’m really not sure that this kind of use of technology really does this. After all, there were lots of us there together and she wasn’t in touch with us at all! What do you think? Is modern technology taking over our lives?

You’ve got to be kidding! Do you want to take us back in time? I really think you’re missing the point of using your mobile to keep in touch with friends. I have friends from around the world which would be impossible without technology. My life is far more interesting than when my parents were teenagers. I’m certainly with your niece on this one.

Andrea, I totally agree with you on technology making teenagers antisocial. While I can see what Techie1 is saying, paying no attention to the people you’re with because you’re texting all the time is just not on. There’s a time and a place for technology and having dinner with family or friends is not one of them.

1. What modern technology is the passage mainly about?
A.Computers.B.Mobile phones.C.Video games.D.The internet.
2. What was Andrea’s niece doing when having dinner together?
A.Having a conversation.B.Chatting with her friends on the phone.
C.Keeping in touch with her relatives.D.Posting a blog on the internet.
3. What is Techie1’s opinion?
A.Techie1 has the same opinion as Jonas B.
B.Techie1 has the same opinion as Andrea.
C.Andrea’s niece shouldn’t always use her phone.
D.Andrea’s niece wasn’t doing anything wrong.
