China Three Gorges University held an activity named “Cell Phone Ninja” (手机忍者). They would like the students not to use cell phones for 21 days. It was really a challenge for most students.

The activity started on 12 April. Each student who volunteered to take part in this activity got a bracelet (手环) . If the students did not use their cell phones, there would be a photo on the screen of the bracelet to show that. If they used their cell phones, a different photo would appear on the screen of the bracelet. After the last class of each day, the students’ photos were shown on the school’s public WeChat.

About 900 students applied (申请) to take part in this test, and 400 were chosen. Seven days later, only 103 students remained. The test was set for 21 days because some scientists believe that 21 days is long enough to help form a habit.

According to the teachers in the university, the activity was not a competition. It depended on the students themselves to make the decision. To help students form better habits, the teachers hoped more activities like this one could be held.

【推荐1】Hope for Tigers

In 2010, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) brought bad news that the world tiger population had hit an all-time low. There were just 3,200 tigers left in the wild, about half as many as there had been ten years before.

Now there’s good news: Tigers could be making a comeback. There were about 4,000 tigers in the world in 2019. In July, India, which has 70% of the world’s tiger, announced(宣布) that its tiger population had reached nearly 3,000. That’s a 30% rise in just four years.

India’s success was years in the making. In 2006, habitat(栖息地) loss made the number of India’s tigers reduce to only 1,411. So the Indian government decided to take a stronger plan of protection. Since its Wildlife Protection Act became law, India has given tigers a high level of protection.

Also, India’s latest tiger amount was the work of thousands of scientists. They covered 150,000 square miles of tiger habitat, using thousands of cameras to record the animal’s movements. With the help of their research, India created 50 reserves(保护区), where tigers can spread out and hunt(捕猎).

It’s when the big cats move away from the reserves that trouble starts. “When tigers leave protected reserves, they often run into local people. We cannot save wildlife without the cooperation of the people.” says wildlife expert Shari Rodriguez. Therefore, India’s government has been moving villages away from reserves. “In India, there is a lot of national pride in tigers. They are India’s biggest attraction. Villagers benefit from jobs in the national parks or from selling art works to tourists.”

But challenges remain for tigers all over Asia. They are hunted for their skin, and their teeth are sold as medicine. “They’re still in danger,” Rodriguez says. She draws hope from India’s success, “This is a small, small victory in a long war against dying out.”

Everyone needs a place to relax, right?

Now young students suffer as much stress as adults do. They face competition, interpersonal relationships and personal problems as adults do. But adults have more social experience and can deal with problems with more self-control. For students, sometimes they have no choice but to rebel(叛逆).

Faced with such a situation, a middle school in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shanxi Province, recently opened its “mood drain room(情绪发泄室)”, a place for students to lift their spirits.

The room provides students with classes to guide their mental(心理的)health development. It’s also a place for practice where students can express the feelings by doing things like boxing(拳击)or shouting.

There are also mental health teachers in the room who help students with questions and also watch them for safety reasons.

Designers have considered different personalities of students when designing these activities. No matter it’s a boy or a girl who shows up, they can put on a pair of boxing gloves to hit a sandbag or shout out loud to relax. A drawing wall and a “writer’s and reader’s corner” are for shy students.

“I wish my school had such a room. But I would feel a little bit shy going there to shout out loud by myself. I like the room to have different theme activities every week so that I feel more comfortable going there,” Xingyuan, a Chinese middle school student shared her opinions.

“What matters is that it should be used in a right way, unlike the place where my son goes to cut classes and box against his classmates. It needs to have professional teachers.” said Li, a parent of a middle school student.

“If you don’t believe, I’ll call the police.” is a lie that parents might use to get their young children to behave. A new psychological(心理学的)study led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore suggests that it has a relationship with harmful results when the children become adults.

The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents as adults, and how well they deal with adulthood challenges.

The first questionnaire(问卷)asked these young adults to recall(回忆)if their parents told them lies about eating, leaving or staying, spending money and so on. Some examples of such lies are “If you don’t come with me now, I will leave you here by yourself and “I don’t bring money with me today, we can come back another day”. Most of them filled in “Yes”. The second questionnaire included questions that could show how often they lie to their parents when they become adults. Adults who were lied to as children were more likely to lie to their parents when they grow up. They also said it was much more difficult for them when meeting psychological and social challenges.

Lead author Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences said, “Parenting by lying can seem to save time, especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something are difficult to explain. When parents tell children that honesty is the best rule, but display dishonesty by lying, such behavior can send wrong messages to their children. Parents’ dishonesty may finally destroy trust and encourage dishonesty in children.”

Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has negative influence on children when they grow up. Parents should understand these possible risks and think of other ways to replace lying, such as knowing children’s feelings, giving specific information so children know what to expect, offering choices and solving problems together, to encourage children to have good behavior, said lead author Setoh Peipei.
