With spring soon coming to an end, people in China are looking forward to the first solar term (节气) of summer, Lixia, which falls on May 5 of this year. Lixia, or the Start of Summer, is the seventh of the 24 Chinese solar terms. It symbolizes (象征) the passing from spring to summer.
Because of the heat of summer, plants will grow faster. The crops also welcome the rapid growing season. In the south of China, farmers are happy to welcome the arrival of Lixia. This is the best time of the year to plant early rice for them.

It stands for people’s good wishes for a colorful life. In some areas, children wear a bag with an egg around their necks. This is believed to help prevent abdominal distension (腹胀). It’s common illness among ancient Chinese children during summer.
On the day of Lixia, people also have the tradition of eating three kinds of food: cherries, green plums, and green wheat. Since there are so many different kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables from which to select, what gets eaten during this time can influence the country. In ancient times, during Lixia, emperors would give ice to their ministers. Common citizens would have icy drinks.

Ronni Abergel, a Danish reporter, started the first Human Library in Copenhagen in 2000. He wanted to create a safe space for people to discuss difficult themes.
There are now Human Libraries in more than 80 countries. Instead of books, the libraries’ resources (资源) are humans. When you walk into a Human Library, you can see a list of the day’s available “books”. These “books” are actually human volunteers who have “published (出版)” their stories and experiences. Once you choose one, you sit down with the “book” either alone or in a group and have a conversation.
“We look for volunteers that are homeless, have no jobs, have certain disabilities, etc, they can help educate us,” Ronni explained. “What could be a better resource to learn from than someone with a lived experience? Whether you’re young or old, rich or poor, no matter who you are, we can all meet up in the library and learn.”
Most people walk out of the Human Library with a new understanding of themselves and others. Ronni believes that listening to another human’s experiences can break us out of our “shells (壳)” and change our opinions.
Would you like to visit a Human Library and have a conversation with a special “book”?

Do you believe that “Every cloud has a silver lining.” and that things mostly turn out for the best? Do you believe “Whatever will be, it will be.”? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist (乐观主义者). You may be more likely to be successful at work and study.
But things don’t always turn out for the best. For example, you may believe “When one door closes, another door opens.” However, in the real life, sometimes when one door closes, another door slams (砰地关上) in your face. Then what would you think?
Now a book called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism has come out. It believes that defensive pessimism (防御性的悲观主义) can lead to good results. Defensive pessimism is a way to manage fear and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for things by setting low goals for themselves. They carefully think about everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to do with these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor (心理学教授), says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they may also turn out to be very successful people. This is because they use their low opinion of the situation’s results to encourage themselves to perform better.”
Why is it likely for defensive pessimists to be successful? This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists always prepare carefully and think about what might go wrong. They have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English which ask people to have a back-up plan. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” and “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.”
Each coin has two sides. Whether you’re an optimist or a pessimist, there are advantages (有利条件) and disadvantages. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are just a realist (现实主义者). Cheer up and be a defensive pessimist. You’re also likely to be as successful as an optimist.

Hotpot
Hotpot has been popular among Chinese people for a long time. As early as in the Shang Dynasty (16th century—11th century BC), people boiled foods in bronze cauldrons (青铜鼎). The cauldron had two parts-one was the pot to cook foods in soup, and the other part was a layer (层) or a space inside the cauldron to hold firewood.
People started to have lattice (分格的) hotpot during the Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 220). They divided pots into several parts to enjoy different flavors (口味).
Yuan Mei was a poet and foodie (美食家) in the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911). He mentioned huoguo, the Chinese name for hotpot, in a book about all kinds of food. At that time, hotpot was very popular. People put all kinds of meat and vegetables into the hotpot. They also used different materials, such as copper (铜) and iron (铁), to make pots.
Dongpo pork
There is a famous Chinese dish called “Dongpo pork”. Does it have anything to do with the great poet Su Dongpo?
Yes. Su Dongpo (Su Shi) was a poet who lived during the Song Dynasty (960—1279). He was the first to make this dish. When he was a local official in Huangzhou, Hubei, he fell in love with cooking pork. In his article Ode to-Pork (《猪肉颂》), Su wrote about how to cook it.
According to folk stories, the dish became well-known when Su went to Hangzhou, Zhejiang, to take office. One day, there was a big flood and Su went out to help people. People heard that Su loved eating pork, so they gave him a lot of it. But Su wanted to give it back. He/cooked the pork in his own special way. Then he gave the dish to every family in the city and every worker on the street. Very soon the dish became famous in Hangzhou and got the name “Dongpo pork”.
Chopsticks
What are the dos and don’ts of using chopsticks?
For Chinese people, chopsticks are not just simple tools to pick up food. They come with their own special rules and traditions.
First, people should not make noise with chopsticks. Playing with chopsticks is seen as rude, just as playing with forks and knives in a Western country is.
There are also some superstitions (迷信) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense (香) that Chinese people use to honor (祭奠) the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.
You should not tap chopsticks on the edge (边缘) of the bowl either, as beggars do this to ask for food.

In real life, sometimes astronauts must stay in the International Space Station for several weeks at a time. The station is not very big, so the astronauts don’t have a lot of room to move around. What’s more, the spaceship that carries astronauts into space is even much smaller. Astronauts have to eat, sleep, and do their work in its very small space.
However, astronauts can still have fun and relax after a hard day’s work. They can watch movies, play cards, or talk to their friends and family on Earth. Some astronauts even play a music al instrument (仪器). You can show your talent, no matter where you live!
They enjoy doing silly things while they are in weightless (失重) conditions, such as turning somersaults (翻筋斗) in midair. They run in circles, up and down walls, and across the ceiling (天花板). They laugh as their hair sticks out in all directions (方向). Astronauts are not only brave, but also humorous to deal with the pressure of living in space.
