A primary school asked parents to take turns in guarding (守卫 ) school gates before 7: 40 and working till 8: 00 every morning. Some young people expressed their opinions.

YES

NO

Sun Zhenyao, 13, Anhui
Safety comes first. Most primary schools suggest that parents come along with their children on their way to school. They just have to stay at the school gate for a little longer. It’s also very crowded around school gates in the morning. If parents can help, there will be fewer accidents.
Sun Run,14, Zhejiang
This request is not just about children’s safety, but also supporting the school. It is a good way to improve relations between parents and schools. Besides, parents can set a good example for their kids by working selflessly for their communities
Li Minyi, 14, Beijing
On weekdays, guarding schools and keeping students safe should be the schools’ responsibility, not the parents. The time during which they have to stand guard is usually about 7: 40 a.m. to 8: 00 a.m., the morning rush hour. Some parents might be late for their work.
Huang Xi,15, Jiangsu
Most parents are workers. They have their own things to do. To meet this new request, some may have to ask for time off. This will influence their work performance. I think it’s better to ask for the parents’ opinion first. But it shouldn’t be something that every parent has to do.

【推荐2】Spending more than two hours a night doing homework leads to better results in English, math and science, according to a major study (by Pam Sammons, England) which has tracked (跟踪)the progress of 3,000 children over the past 15 years.

Spending any time doing homework showed advantages, but the influence was greater for the students who put in two to three hours a night, according to the study published by the Department for Education in England.

The scientists who did the research say their study emphasizes (强调)what students actually do rather than how much work the school has set.

Pam Sammons, a professor of education at Oxford University, said that time spent on homework showed the influence of the school—if children were expected to do homework and if

they enjoy their subjects. “That’s one of the reasons Indian and Chinese children do better. They put more time in it.” he added.

It’s also reported that students who enjoyed school got better results. “Schools could make sure children had a better experience by improving the school environment, making school work interesting and making children feel supported by teachers." Sammons said.

It is suggested that children aged 5 to 7 should be set one-hour homework a week, half an hour a night for 7 to 11-year-olds. Secondary schools were encouraged to set up two hours a night for 14 to 16-year-olds.

【推荐3】“Students are not allowed (被允许) to bring their smart phones to school, or the teachers will take away the smart phones and throw them.” This is a new school rule (校规) made by Fanting Middle School in Shanxi. I’m surprised to hear the rule. I wonder if students need to have such a stricter (严格的) rule.

In my opinion, a school rule is to help the students learn more effectively (有效地). In my school, one of the rules also says we shouldn’t bring smart phones to school. Our teachers will take away the smart phones, but not throw them. Then, our teachers will talk with us. After school, teachers will give mobile phones back to the students. I think this rule is effective because it can help us think more of our studies.

I don’t believe stricter rules are more effective. Such stricter rules only make students unwilling to follow. Besides, stricter rules will lead to bad relationships (关系) between teachers and students because students sometimes can’t understand these rules and may feel unhappy or even angry with them.

In a word, school rules are useful, but they shouldn’t be too strict. Good schools rules also make students learn more effectively, but very strict will only make the relationships between teachers and students bad. When we think the school rules are too strict, we may talk with teachers about them. But when the school rules are right and can make us better, we will be willing to follow them.

1. In the writer’s school, if a student brings the smart phone to school, the teachers will ________.
A.ask the student’s parents to talk with them
B.throw the smart phone when they know about it
C.give the smart phone back when the school is over
D.stop talking to the student and feel unhappy or angry
2. What does the underlined word “them” in the last sentence refer to(指代)?
A.modern smart phonesB.good school rules
C.strict teachersD.different subjects
3. What is the writer’s idea about the passage?
A.The rules in Fanting Middle School are quite good.
B.Good but not too strict school rules are really useful.
C.It’s important for teenagers to bring smart phones to school.
D.Mobile phones make the teacher-student relationships bad.
