Project-based learning (项目化学习) is learning while doing. It gives learners the chance to get a deeper understanding of a topic. During the learning, learners solve problems by using real-life experience. Students work on a project over a period of time-from a week to a term. At the end of the project, they show their knowledge and skills by creating a product, or holding an activity for people. Let’s take the example of Susan. Susan is an eleven-year-old student in Sunshine Middle School. She wanted to know more about Hanfu culture. It took her about a month to work on the project. Well, how did she make it? Step 1 Choose a topic She chose Hanfu culture as the topic because she was interested in beautiful clothes. Step 2 Do the research To collect information, she read books and articles about the history of Hanfu culture. She watched videos and shows all connected with Hanfu culture. Step 3 Create a project She was really good at art, so she created a book about Hanfu from different dynasties (朝代). In her book, she drew pictures of them and wrote introductions in her own words. Step 4 Do the presentation After all of that work, she "made a presentation in class wearing a set of Hanfu that she bought online. Then she shared her videos on the Internet. Through project work, students benefit; a lot. So if you’re interested in something, why not start with project-based learning? |
2. How long did it take Susan to work on the project?
3. What topic did Susan choose?
4. Why did Susan create a book about Hanfu?
5. Where did Susan share her videos?

Learning Is Like a Journey
We can remember some important times in our lives. Some things have become good memories. The memories are always in the corner of our mind.
When I was in kindergarten(幼儿园), I had many toys and friends. They made me laugh and cry. The teachers taught us many songs and games. We played all day. Although we did not know what learning was at that time, we were learning every day.
When I was in primary school, I was excited to learn school subjects. My favorite subject was science. I remembered on the first day our science teacher told us the sun was like a big fire ball. We were quite surprised and kept our mouths open. We began to wonder at the secret of nature. Later many other things came to our ears. We began to learn carefully.
When I was ten years old, I began to read newspapers, keep a diary, visit museums and make many friends. Every day was something new, interesting and exciting.
Now I am in middle school. Happily, I am still learning. It is like a journey to me. I have learned a lot, but there’s still a long way for me to go. I hope to become a learned(有学问的)person some day.

That’s all. Thank you!
For anyone experiencing the struggle of foreign language learning, here’s my way of learning Chinese.
Study abroad.
You can try to study abroad. It’s the laziest method because although my Chinese is so poor right now. Every day I’m still exposed (曝光的) to so much. It helps me keep good level of Chinese.
Find friends who don’t speak English.
Finding friends who don’t speak your mother tongue (母语) is the best way to improve. And this doesn’t even need to be local friends. I liked to hang out with Korean and Japanese friends because they were also learning Chinese. We were asked not to speak English but Chinese. In this way, my Chinese skills improved a lot.
Go to KTV.
Singing is such a great group activity, but it is terrible when you don’t know the songs. Ask your friends for a list of classic KTV songs and start learning your favourites. You’ll learn more grammar structures. For example, you can learn lots of romantic sounding phrases to express your love in Chinese songs.
Watch YouTube!
If you don’t have time for foreign language films or TV shows, find vlogs (视频博客) or even different kinds of shows by people who speak your desired language! I love watching vlogs in Chinese because it’s another way to get used to hearing real-life conversations. And it is a good way to learn new slangs (俚语) and phrases.
I think language learning is sometimes difficult, but try to keep it fun!
1. What is the laziest method to learn a foreign language?2. Which tip is the way to learn lots of romantic sounding phrases?
3. Why does the writer love watching vlogs in Chinese?
4. What does the writer think of language learning?
5. How many tips about improving English are mentioned in the passage?

English is more and more important nowadays, but some students have troubles in learning English.
These days a discussion about English learning becomes a hot topic. Xu Jin, a national political adviser, said that English should not be a core subject like Chinese and math. More course hours should be given to improve students’ skills in physical education, music and art. He thought English took up about 10 percent of class hours, but less than 10 percent of university students use the language at work. It was a waste of educational resources and students felt great burden on their shoulders. Moreover, smart devices can offer translation services and in the age of AI, translators will be among the top 10 professions to be eliminated (淘汰) he added. Some people agreed with his opinion and said they had wasted too much time studying English at school because they didn’t use it in their daily lives. They thought it should be better to spend more time learning Chinese language and culture. However, Zhang Lianzhong, a professor at Beijing Foreigh Studies University, said it was wise to make English a compulsory course (必修课) from third grade in 2001. Students can open their mind and improve their language ability through leaning English. English teachers should also focus more on improving students’ language skills, not exam-taking ability. |
2. What will be among the top 10 professions to be eliminated?
3. Why did some people think they had wasted too much time studying English at school?

Chinese food is very famous in the world. Chinese people think food is one of the most important things during their life. They do not greet each other with “How are you?” but they ask, “Have you eaten?”
Since table manners are part of Chinese cooking culture, Chinese people still follow their table manners today.
There is a seat for the “guest of honor” or the oldest person in the family. In most parts of China, the “seat of honor” is usually the one facing the front door of the room. The “seat of honor” can also be the one in the middle facing east of the room if there is no seat facing the door.
As for the host, he may take the most convenient seat. It is always the nearest to the kitchen or service door. It is better to sit after the elder or the “guest of honor” sits down. Guests should wait for the host to invite them to get seated.
Chinese people like having meals together and they put all the dishes on a round table. There is sometimes a round rotating disc (旋转盘) in the center of the dining table. It makes sure that all the diners (用餐者) can enjoy the meal and feel respected.

What is an avalanche (雪崩)? It is a kind of sudden natural disaster (灾害) and usually happens in the mountains. During an avalanche a lot of snow and ice move down the mountains. When they fall, the snow and ice move faster and faster. In fact, snow from an avalanche can move as fast as two hundred miles an hour.
Most avalanches happen after big snow storms. In the mountains like the Alps and the Himalayas, there is snow and ice all year round. After big storms, there will be much new snow on the old snow in the mountains. However, too much new snow may cause the old snow to pour down.
When heavy snow moves down the mountains, it brings trees and rocks along. Avalanches are very dangerous, because they can push down houses and kill people. Luckily, not many people live in the mountains. So not many people die from avalanches each year.
However, climbers love to have fun in the snow mountains. Scientists usually can tell if an avalanche might happen. They should pay more attention to scientists’ warnings (预警) before they go climbing.
